On this day in 1963, the 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy was assassinated traveling through Dallas, TX in the car you see behind me. Lee Harvey Oswald apparently fired three shots from the Texas School Book Depository Building and Kennedy was pronounced dead 30 minutes later. The car has three inch thick bulletproof windows and had the roof been on, he'd probably have survived. Incredible to stand next to this vehicle which has such an iconic place in US history and mythology. Rappelled 104 feet in, and spent 5 hours underground jumping down waterfalls, drifting into huge caverns illuminated by glow worms, free-climbing up and behind waterfalls, checking out ancient stalactites & whale bones, squeezing through pinch-points and drifting underneath what looked like a starry sky, deep underground. The Wild West. Ever since I was young, this landscape inspired thoughts of adventure and of America's native peoples. This shoot took me to the Sierra Pelona Mountains where the rock formations were uplifted 25 million years ago and were later exposed by the San Andreas Fault. The Tataviam people were living here when the Spanish arrived. Their language was most likely a Takic Uto-Aztecan language, and it felt as if their presence was still here, although the last of them died in 1916. This place has since been the refuge of bandits and Spanish missionaries. Our planet is a rich and beautiful place. The Medicine. With everything that's happening in the Amazon right now, this film couldn't be better timed. As we know, the millions of animal, insect and plant species in the Amazon are now at risk. Indigenous peoples have been using this bounty for millennia as medicine, many elements of which have then been appropriated into Western medicine. Although I have never taken Ayahuasca, Western science is now seeing its benefits as an anti-depressant, and one suspects that this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to its powers to heal. Ayahuasca is only one compound to be found in the Amazon. Imagine all the potential cures and treatments that are being lost right now as the fires rage. Cancer? AIDS? Our beef-addiction is causing much of the clear-cutting of the trees and the burning. The land is being cleared mainly to raise cattle.
