I know the coronavirus is top of mind for everyone right now. It is justifiably pervasive in the news and the pandemic is almost all-consuming. I send out love to everyone, these are deeply trying times. It is also #WomensHistoryMonth and I hope that a change of focus for a few minutes is a welcome distraction. This month, #LoveOurGirls is featuring the National Domestic Workers Alliance (@DomesticWorkers) and Ai-jen Poo (@aijenp) it’s inspiring co-founder. Nannies, house cleaners and home care workers have some of the hardest, least secure jobs in the nation. These domestic workers are majority women, mostly immigrants, and women of color. Physically demanding and emotionally draining, many work in isolation and behind closed doors; removed from the sight and mind of most of the public. And while domestic workers were deliberately left out of the Fair Labor Standards Act, NDWA is making great strides in advocating for the stability, benefits, and fair pay for these critical but often marginalized members of the workforce. Learn about this movement, its founders and the incredible stories of some of its members who’ve benefited from the Alliance. The link is in my bio.

I launched #LoveOurGirls four years ago on Valentine’s Day and I am so thankful for the amazing connections that have been made with organizations and individuals alike who are doing amazing work across the world. Work that changes the lives and future of girls and women everywhere. This month we feature the stellar women of this last year while we also examine how we can take the love we receive this Valentine’s Day and extend it to a girl or woman who has not been allowed to chose the person she loves. The organization @VowForGirls seeks to end child marriage in a very unique way. It seeks to connect couples getting married with girls fleeing the oppressive practice of child marriage. So while they are saying "I do", they help girls across the world say "I don’t". I do think this is a deeply fitting organization to feature on this celebrated day of love. We must be reminded that girls are being forced into unions that they do not wish to be a part of. They are being denied the journey of self-love and self-discovery. The statistics on this issue will astound you. The sheer number of girls who are married before the age of 18; how that number relates to education and physical and sexual abuse. We must bring an end to this practice and allow girls to live self-determined lives. On the fourth birthday of LOG, I ask that you take the time to make a connection with one of the organizations we have featured over the last year and extend your awareness to the girls out there who need our love so they can live lives that give them the space to love themselves. The first month of a new decade. It feels like a time ripe with possibility, a reset button almost. I would love to see that be the case when it comes to the many ways in which women and girls still experience discrimination - something that has no place in this modern age. January’s #LOVEOURGIRLS features an organization aptly called She’s the First (@shesthefirst) that works ardently and passionately towards the future I long to see. They believe that when a girl is educated, respected, and heard, she is unstoppable, and I couldn’t agree more. While many times the girls experiencing the worst kind of oppression, be it child marriage or denial of an education, are too far away from us to envision, She's the First fosters global connections; making it so that your involvement brings a girl’s life across the world close to your own, something I’m convinced draws us to do more. Let’s start this decade with a renewed determination to bring about real change for girls and women across the world. Girls like Deepa from Nepal; author of the featured poem and STF Scholar who battles lupus and dreams of being a nephrologist to help others like herself though living in a society where educating a woman is largely considered a waste of money. Click the link to read some incredibly inspiring stories, and see how you can connect with young girls in various parts of the world who are ready to start their new beginning and unleash their full potential, free from the bounds of oppression. Go on. Do it. We all can. Quote our favorite characters from our favorite films. We’ve all experienced being left with an indelible mark after watching a powerful narrative that captures our hearts no matter how young or old we were at the time. It can transport you to another place and provide an incredible sense of satisfaction. That’s the power of film. Movies are some of the most powerful tools of storytelling and human connection. I experienced this personally being part of Marvel’s Black Panther - the response across the world to the diverse representation combined with great original storytelling had an incredible impact on a magnificent range of people. Like so many industries however, filmmaking is no exception when it comes to gender disparity. In spite of the fact that women made up 51% of moviegoers in 2018, they represented only 4% of directors, 15% of writers, 18% of producers and executive producers, and 14% of editors. That’s why this month’s #LoveOurGirls newsletter features the tremendous nonprofit WomenInFilm.org (WIF) who are working to change that narrative through their mission of encouraging and inspiring women in all aspects of global media. WIF advocates for and advances the careers of women working in the screen industries to achieve parity and transform culture. Through their efforts, they hope to ensure that no talented, determined, female voice is left behind. Let’s start a new decade making steady progress towards the goal of gender equality in film. It’s time to change the narrative. Link is in my bio. [http://bit.ly/LOGDec2019]

This month’s #LoveOurGirls newsletter features the work of the @ToryBurchFoundation and it’s trailblazing founder, @ToryBurch. Not only is she the creator of a wildly successful global fashion brand, but she is also a champion for change who works relentlessly to ensure that other ambitious women have the opportunities they need to see their dreams come to fruition. Learn how she overcame the stigma that female ambition is unattractive, and how her foundation is investing in female entrepreneurs, creating critical awareness campaigns, and tackling norms that diminish the potential of women and girls everywhere. She’s certainly motivated me to embrace my ambition, and I know she can do the same for you as well. The link is in my bio. [http://bit.ly/LOGNov2019]

It was surreal to be presented the 2019 CARE Impact Award for Global Equality by the one and only Iman last night! She was one of the first to show me and other young African girls that we could hold our heads high as queens. Thank you @CAREorg for this incredible recognition! I’ve sought to combat injustice through the medium of story - bringing women to the center of the narrative, and making sure her voice is heard clearly and without interruption. You however, have been waging the battle on the frontlines with boots on the ground in the fight against global poverty and gender injustice for decades. It’s no wonder the first charitable contribution I ever made as a young adult was to your organization. As honored as I am to receive this award, I am also reminded: that there are still so many girls and women in the world in need of our support and courage. Whose potential may never be reached without it. Thank you for your example of what it means to stand up during these divisive times so that together, we don’t need to just imagine a more equitable future, we can live it.

What does it mean to be Born a Girl? How many times have you heard people unabashedly declare how much they hope to have a boy? Girls are often immediately born at a disadvantage because they are not what was most hoped for or desired. This past week’s International Day of the Girl was a vital celebration for girls across the world because so many still face unimaginable pain and suffering, simply for being born female. October’s #LoveOurGirls newsletter highlights some truly heart shattering stories, and while it’s difficult to grasp how these experiences and practices still occur, we’re also updating you on the courageous work of two amazing organizations previously featured, the Tahirih Justice Center (@tahirihjustice) and CARE (@careorg). Both are on the front lines, fighting to make sure that girls are given a shot at justice, equality and stability. Get to know these girls and organizations, and don’t be daunted by the scope of the issue; even small acts contribute to the collective effort. The time for change for our girls is now. Let’s hold ourselves to task. For the girl. Link’s in my bio: http://bit.ly/LOGOct2019

On today’s International #DayOfTheGirl, I’m reminded of all the phenomenal women who shaped me into who I am today simply by being an example of strength, courage and resilience in the face of often dire circumstances and challenges. From the famous to the obscure, they left an indelible mark on my life. You have a chance to be the role model you wish you had growing up - inspire the upcoming #GenerationEquality. There’s a girl out there looking up to you. Image via — @unwomen

My life efforts have been about trying to bridge a gap between the two cultures that make me who I am. American born and Zimbabwean raised, I have always been a part of these two places. I could not tell you which one is more home to me than the other. In this advanced technological age there are so many ways to connect; to learn about places and people outside ourselves. In a time when I would imagine we would come closer together as global citizens, sometimes I feel a divide is growing. That’s why I am so keen to share this month’s #LoveOurGirls newsletter. We feature @unfpa, a section of the United Nations that fights for the potential and rights of women and girls in parts of the world that are often forgotten and where it is harder than ever to be a girl. @UNFPA addresses how girls can strive to find their power in a female body. It helps them with issues related to reproductive health, child marriage and domestic violence and has had a transformative impact. We’re also highlighting some unbelievably resilient and brilliant women living in dire circumstances in Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya - women who have found ways to excel in their various passions and abilities, everything from filmmaking, to fixing cars, to stove making and studying software engineering. These women are an inspiration. The disadvantage of being considered people with no country has not deterred them from striving to explore their own potential to provide for their families and contribute to the world. Last but not least, we have a feature on films made by and about women - a phenomenon often underrepresented in the global discourse. These stories are deeply affective. I believe they have the power to change lives for the better and can help connect a fractured globe. Let’s take the time to get to know someone else’s story this month. We may just find ourselves changed by women we would otherwise never have gotten the chance to know. We have an opportunity to make the world a little smaller. Let’s not miss it. I’m excited to share August’s #LoveOurGirls newsletter which features several extraordinary women including Kenya native Nice Nailantei Leng’ete, whose work on female genital mutilation earned her recognition among TIME’s 100 most influential people in 2018. Though most don’t know her name, she is changing the future for many young girls by combating this devastating cultural practice. By changing detrimental social norms she and others are saving lives and making the world that much better for every little girl whose mother labors to bring her into this world. Speaking of labor, we’re also highlighting the AMREF HEALTH AFRICA (@amrefusa) organization and their work combating the critical issue of maternal mortality. While the majority of us assume childbirth would be a joyous time for most women, for many around the world, it is actually the most life-threatening. Click the link in my bio to learn about the incredibly innovative work AMREF is doing to train community health care workers, provide clinics with access to life-saving power through portable solar ‘suitcases’, and leveraging mobile apps to educate a new generation of workers in critical care techniques that can potentially save thousands of lives. http://bit.ly/LOGAug2019

July’s #LoveOurGirls features the work of ONE.org and the incredible partnerships they’ve created in their goal to eradicate extreme poverty and preventable disease in Africa and other parts of the developing world. The @one Campaign and it’s army of 9 million member-activists is strictly nonpartisan and recognizes that the best solutions often come from within the communities that are impacted by the vagaries of social and economic injustice on a daily basis. With that, ONE is empowering and elevating the voices of some extraordinary woman who have come up with tools, strategies and campaigns of their own. Like “The Restorers”, an astounding group of teens who created an app to assist girls facing FGM, and Dorcas Wangira, the intrepid journalist who would not let their story be forgotten. Or Senegalese artist Black Queen and others currently campaigning to make sexual assault and domestic violence a serious crime in Senegal. I hope you’ll read about these and others like them this month, as well as learn more about ONE.org who recognizes that when a woman thrives, her community thrives as well. The link is in my bio.

“A period should end a sentence, not a girls education.” We all remember the day we ‘became a woman’. I was twelve and a half and a swimmer, so I was just really, really annoyed. But I had all that I needed to handle it. This month, #LoveOurGirls features some extraordinary inventors, storytellers and activists who have gone to incredible lengths to address the issues of stigma, misinformation, ostracism, and the abject lack of access to sanitary feminine supplies that millions of women in the developing world face when going through their monthly menstrual cycle. Find out about global campaigns like “The Pad Project” and others working to address the issue right here in the USA. Watch the riveting Oscar-winning documentary ‘Period. End of Sentence’ and get inspired by the work of inventor Arunachalam Murugaratham whose low cost sanitary pad-making machine is changing lives and fortunes throughout rural India. See how you can get involved in ensuring that the onset of a girl’s period doesn’t coincide with the loss of her dignity, physical health, or educational access. “I just fell in love with the idea that writing could change someone’s life.” - Ellen Stackable, Founder of Creative Writing Non-Profit “Poetic Justice” (@PoeticJusticeOK) Did you know that the U.S. is the world’s most zealous incarcerator of women? That while only 4% of the world’s female population lives in the U.S., we account for over 30% of the world’s incarcerated women? Yet we rarely hear their stories; we don’t take into account the psychological impact prison has had on them, or the context of their experiences which often includes childhood trauma, sexual abuse, domestic violence, and poverty. Moved by meeting incarcerated women in Oklahoma, many of whom were first-time, non-violent offenders, Ellen Stackable noted, “These women have been failed by everyone… When you learn what they’ve been through, you understand how they found their way to prison.” That’s when the English teacher of over 20 years, created PoeticJustice.org - a space where incarcerated women can heal and commune through their written word. Read this month’s #LoveOurGirls newsletter to meet some of the women whose sense of hope, self-worth, and personal empowerment have been restored through the power of storytelling and gaining their own voice. Strong, fearless, and outspoken. That’s how Black women are almost always described. While we are strong, we are not impervious to pain. Or not in need of protection. One of the costs of being considered so strong is being left out of the discourse related to injustice and advocacy. The fact is that Black women are much more likely to be victims of human and sex trafficking. The fact is that Black women receive considerably less attention when they go missing. The fact is that perpetrators of crimes against Black women statistically receive lighter sentences. That’s why I’m proud to feature the National Black Women’s Justice Institute (NBWJI) in this month’s #LoveOurGirls newsletter. They are doing crucial work in the fight to end disparities faced by Black women and girls in the justice system through education, innovative awareness building, and collaboration across the diaspora. Click the link in my bio to read about them, their inspirational founder Dr. Monique Morris, and other groups who are working tirelessly to ensure that “strong” doesn’t mean forgotten or unseen.
