It was a surreal experience, and one thing that stuck out to me more than anything was, in my dad’s speech, he mentioned the ending to our story... “mine and my son’s story has a happy ending, not every parent gets that.” I woke up this morning with immense gratitude for this stage in my life. To say that we have a “happy ending” is premature, because the future is never guaranteed, the disease of addiction is ever present. This scene in particular crossed my mind... I’m happy to have become willing, and to seek help, before it got to this. If anyone needs any words of encouragement, or knows someone that does, please feel free to reach out. ❤️ 📸: @fwo3

Thank you @gilberttrejo38 for letting me work with such an amazing actor and not letting the words on the page get in the way! ・・・ #Repost @fromasonfilm @sashafro will probably go down as one of the greatest actors of her entire generation. Her character LYNN was very important to me, emotionally based on my own fears and regrets, Lynn was the character I put most of myself into. She was originally written as male, and to be honest, it was Sasha that helped me understand the subconscious gender bias I’d had in my writing. I had worked on the film for a long time with male actors in the role, and though they are amazing, there was something that didn’t feel perfectly “Lynn”.... Sasha helped me realize that it was nothing but the gender pronoun on the page. I am so grateful for the experience to (with help) recognize my own error, and (with help) correct it. At first it was an odd pill to swallow, to look at myself and my writing that way, but we ALL have to do it, and I wouldn’t trade the experience making this film with @sashafro and my dad for the entire world. It pains me to think that closed mindedness, especially my own, could ever creep in and hinder true art. ❤️ @officialdannytrejo @gilberttrejo38

The character my father plays in this film is named GEORGE, he is, in spirit, an amalgamation of my dad’s real life empathy and kindness, and my grandfather’s stern sensibilities. My grandfather passed away a few years before I was born, and my dad would always call him “the Mexican Archie Bunker”... there was a lot of unresolved emotion in the way my dad had processed my grandfather’s reaction to his addiction. Perceived coldness, distance, and hostility, that at their root stem from pain and fear. One of my favorite moments from my own life so far, and I won’t dive into the particulars, was that after reading the script, and having a chance to portray a man similar to my grandfather, my dad and I were able to hug, and discuss our newfound understanding of our father’s struggles. Drug addiction isn’t just something you put yourself through, you put the members of your family through it as well. Love strains to hold on as we drag everyone to despair. I thank god for the opportunity to come through on the side, and through art, share a tender, vulnerable moment like this with my dad ❤️❤️ @officialdannytrejo @gilberttrejo38 📸:@devon.wick

Kindness is powerful. I was part of the Wish Man film about Frank Shankwitz, a founder of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Frank’s story spreads the message that ‘Everyone Can Be A Hero’, and how one act of kindness can have a ripple effect. Lets put that ripple effect to the test.
