Chef Louis lived a few different lives. He was born in Budapest, he was a journalist, he fought against the nazis (and supposedly was a spy) and was forced to flee his homeland to America, where he eventually settled in Chicago. Like so many immigrants, he turned to cooking, and eventually opened “The Bakery” in Chicago, which was the toast of the town well before all the restaurant hype of today. He stayed true to his journalistic roots though, always writing and compiling almost 40000 cookbooks that are now in collections of u of Chicago, u of Iowa, and johnson and wales, where several of your favorite Chicago chefs attended. My parents met working in his restaurant, and I was so excited to visit and do work in his homeland (including this portrait) in 2017. Some of that work is in “life Thus Far” and I hope you’ll pick up a copy. In 2016 I was offered an opportunity I never would have dreamed of, to work in Helsinki, Finland. I knew literally nothing about this small country, but I spent 2 weeks with students at @aaltoarts leading a workshop about public art and installing this 18 ft tall wheat paste in a warehouse space downtown. The space was actually under threat of sale to a German “Home Depot” style chain, but it part because of the attention from press of the installations of the students and myself the space was saved and is still used for art events! Was super proud to have made a small impact. The other fun thing about Helsinki in November is its cold as hell and gets dark at 2 pm, so pasting was very difficult, but catching tags was pretty damn easy! Also Finnish food is amazing and I was. Introduced the best little dive called Bar Sirdie and her jukebox is epic. The first time I went to Miami in 2010 I went wheat pasting in a relatively chill Wynwood on an abandoned building. The next year I returned to that same building being a Ducati dealership and wynwood exploding. I can’t think of a better Miami metaphor, other the guy at Home Depot who told me miami is a “birdcage for the elderly” I’ve slept in a car,on the beach, in a 5 star hotel, on a hotel floor, and in jail in Miami over the art basel years. @pyramidoracle and myself even pulled a unconscious guy out of the ocean. Miami is a crazy all encompassing place, but Worth a shot and beer, cigar,and fried chicken with @kate.lynn.lewis at @macsclubdeuce in the end though. There is an Italian saying that goes “Apri gli o chi!” Or “open your eyes!”I think it has a few contexts but it’s mostly used as something you’d yell at a bad driver. One night we were in a little town trying to put up an 18 ft wheat paste on a billboard and we got caught. My hosts spoke to the guy who claimed he owned the billboard, and he said he didn’t care that we were pasting but he was worried the art might attract attention to the billboard, which he apparently haven’t paid taxes on in years... things took a turn for the worse and he started threatening to call the cops so we threw the ladder in the back of the car and made our escape, driving through these small narrow Italian streets, ladder half out the back window, Matteo yelling “APRI GLI OCCHI!” at anyone in our path. I think you have to live life like you are invincible, but I also think you have to live life understanding that sort of thinking is a result of a serious psychological disorder. I owe so much of my Life Thus Far (hey that’s the name of the book!) to strangers in travel that have become good friends and colleagues. Whether it be trading plane tickets for a painting and a guy in San Francisco tells me at a Giants game he’s moving to Chicago to start a little joint called @verticalgallery and asking me to work with him, whether it be meeting a stranger called @thatlazyedwin outside of a bar in London called dirty dicks and catching tags along the canal, whether it be meeting some French guy in São Paulo that’s down to help me wheat paste and paint an abandoned cement factory, or whether it’s @never2501 linking me with @viavaiproject to paint in the tiniest town in Italy, or even my big sister @anna_cerniglia taking a chance on me 13 years ago, I’ve learned life is about these connections and about kindness to strangers and travelers. In this political climate I think that is more important than ever. One of the sillier, slightly complicated, and overall more fun projects of “Life Thus Far” was sneaking these signs into Pitchfork Festival in Chicago. Security wouldn’t let me in with them so I had to call a gallery assistant and toss them over the barricade to her in a garbage bag and then have her hide them until I got into the fest. People seemed to enjoy them though,although one idiot punched me in the back of the head because he apparently didn’t appreciate the notion of an EDM concert filled with dudes named Trevor. Rent continues to rise and be an issue in many American cities, but it seemed most appropriate to talk about this issue in San Francisco in 2017. This is a rotating wall in the Tenderloin, when I started my base coat for painting (a classic SF red) this guy across the street starting yelling and literally booing me. Then I wrote “ new mural in progress” on one of the panels and he came back later in the day and apologized. I’m glad this city has such passion for street art, even if it costs an arm and a leg to live there. Let sleeping Giants (or 49ers) lie. Call me crazy, but one of my favorite things about travel is learning the angles of a city. The intangibles. The first time I went to New York City was over Christmas holidays. I was 23 and My girlfriend at the time lived there and I spent two weeks with her and wheat pasting those frozen streets with @halopigg and @pyramidoracle It was a great time until my girlfriend and I broke up 2 days before Christmas and I had to impromptu book a flight home on Christmas Eve. I was in Williamsburg, alone on Christmas Eve figuring out how to get home and so upset, so I just started catching tags. That’ll make things better right? I was tagging a board up and something just didn’t feel right...sure enough the cops were a block away and some guy was pointing in my direction. I hauled it and ducked into a pharmacy and changed jackets and hats and bought a soda. I came back out and ducked into a bar, hoping they didn’t notice me, which they didn’t. I start talking to a guy at the bar about how I’m going home to Chicago on Christmas Eve and I don’t have any money. He says “ oh man, take a Gypsy cab! They’ll take you to LaGuardia from anywhere in Bushwick for $20!” The intangibles. I took a Gypsy cab to LaGuardia and asked my parents to pick me up at ohare at 1 am on Christmas Eve...my flight went to midway...life is about the intangibles...anyways, two of my favorite New Yorkers are the guys from @bkstreetart and I was very honored that Jaime contributed photos of my time in New York and Steven wrote the foreword to “Life Thus Far” please find a preview of their review of the book in bio link and expect more from us soon. The week I arrived in Italy to paint with @viavaiproject I had no idea what I was going to paint. While traveling, I read that a student in Milan had broken an 800 year old bust in a museum because she knocked it over while trying to take a selfie with it. This is what happens when two forms of vanity collide I guess...while in Italy I also made a series of screen prints, I’ll be giving away a set to one lucky winner. In 2015 @adamlucasnyc and I were almost arrested for putting up this piece in New York City.The cops had us pinned to the ground cuffed and telling us “shut the fuck up” and “why are we doing this glue shit” That was the first time ever that a police officer actually knew what I was doing.They separate us and a few moments pass and they uncuffed Adam. They had only seen me doing the act so I’m like “great adam talked his way out of it and now I’m going to jail alone...” then they uncuffed me, Shockingly. Turns out one of the undercover cops was a regular at a bar Adam owned up the street. The same cop that was telling me to shut the fuck up then said to me “you know your arts pretty good kid but you don’t need to be doing this glue shit, I have a cousin in Jersey who does tattoos, he makes $400 an hour. Don’t fuck around with this glue shit go do tattoos!” They let us go and we went to drink whiskey with @icyandsot Adam has been kind enough to include me in a few projects in his #lifethusfar So I will be giving away an original painting from one of those projects. In 2014 I was offered a unique opportunity to paint a hardware store and fish market in Fulton Market in Chicago that was set for demolition. They said I could keep my paint in the hardware store, but the moment I walked into Chicago wholesale hardware I fell in love harder than I probably ever will in my life. It was a beautiful, perfect, time capsule of a moment in Chicago. I asked if I could throw a show in the space and the owners agreed, and I spent the next 2 months painting the building and making a show of paintings only using materials left in the hardware store. This project couldn’t have happened without @johallaprojects and @anna_cerniglia and @jshapack The show was open for 2 weeks and then on August 31,2014 the building was torn down and is now a “luxury apartment building” there is a chapter in “life thus far” about this project and I hope you’ll pre order it today. The year was 2008,and a young kid from Chicago got to go a world away to a magical, amazing city called São Paulo, in a beautiful country called Brasil. He played soccer in the streets and learned about street art and graffiti and got to see and meet some of his heroes and even start his own odd journey into the art world that fascinated him.I was that kid. Although I haven’t been to Amazonas yet it is impossible to ignore the threat or ramifications of what the fires currently happening will bring to all of us. São Paulo, a big city, nearly a world away from the forest of Amazonas is black from the smoke of the fires, and the new government doesn’t seem to give a damn. Well I do.
