When eliminated from a reality show dancing competition... always seek a second opinion ❤️ ( #latergram from last Monday)

My last dance. I’d been working for months with the intention of leaving you with a freestyle in the finals, but maybe it’s best I leave you with this. I did this show hoping my kids would see me work hard... little did I know they’d see me brought to my knees. Before our personal tragedy, I’d been trying to figure out a way to explain to my kids why I’d found it so important to support my cast even though they were technically my competitors. And then they saw me need their support. And accept it. It’s not the Olympics... it’s a reality dance show. But it’s also a family. Thank you to my partner and friend for life @theemmaslater for being so open and strong and talented, to the entire cast of pros for the mini master-classes and the wordless hugs, and the entire crew, from our segment producers to wardrobe, HMU, grips, P.A.’s and the band. Thank you for the safe, loving pocket you provided when I needed it most. And to all of you who’ve allowed me to share this personal and creative journey with you... thank you for all the good vibes and prayers. @vanderkimberly and I have needed them, and they’ve helped. We’re all in this together. That’s what this experience has shown me first hand - that interconnectedness is not just a nice, altruistic notion... it’s the only way we’re ever going to make it through. So thank you for your support. I’ll see you on the next dance floor. ❤️

Wrecked. Devastated. In shock. That’s how we’re feeling right now after the soul we thought were going to welcome into our family in April... has taken a short cut to whatever lies beyond this life. We’ve been through this before, but never this late in the pregnancy, and never accompanied by such a scary, horrific threat to @vanderkimberly and her well-being. Grateful that she’s now recovering, but we’ve only just begun unpacking the layers of this one. Thank you to all of our friends and co-workers (and dance partners) who have shown up for us so beautifully during this time. As many of you have said, “There are no words...” and it’s true. Which is why in a time like this it’s enough to know that you’re there. Grieving AND counting our blessings today.

Posting this today in honor of my left knee, which - when I woke up today - felt like I could dance on it again for the first time since jumping off the stage (in Cuban heels) last week. Huge shoutout to all of my 42 year-old bones, muscles, joints and ligaments which are affording me the time of my life right now. I appreciate you and promise to make it up to you when this is all done❤️ And to anybody out there feeling too old to try something new... never underestimate what your body can pull off when you love something and you’re patient with your progress.

Two dances... learned in six days. Countless hours of rehearsal. One shot to do it in front of millions of people, live on television. And so far... zero regrets. My oldest daughter watched me dance to a boy band song on stage in front of millions of people tonight. And she liked it so much that we watched it on TV when we got home. And, an actual member of that boy band presided as a judge at my performance... and gave me a 10 for how I danced it. If you had told me ten years ago that any of this would happen... I probably would not have believed you. #dwts

Love love loved dancing this contemporary... In it, @theemmaslater represents hope (in the form of vulnerability), as I go through the ups and downs and challenges and heartbreak that come with having a dream. My parents - without whose support I would have never gotten here - watched from the audience, and cried. As did my daughter. And we got our first perfect score. This dancing thing has been a wild journey... so much hard work behind the scenes, so much time spent at the edge of my abilities, fighting and clawing to make it through and get to the point where we can let the dance live. Couldn’t possibly express how much I appreciate all the veterans (like my grandfather) who have served this country, past and present. This dance was for anybody who has something in their heart they want to share. Know that the world might not recognize the importance, or the beauty of it right away. That’s okay. Everybody’s busy - they have their own stuff to worry about. Just don’t let the shortcomings of others come to define what is special to you. Protect that quiet, persistent whisper. Matters of the heart are unique, and challenging, and often “imperfect”... but worth sharing. Don’t ever stop believing that you are enough.

A truly inspired creative by @theemmaslater Really a perfect dance... had I not screwed it up in the middle 😬. But Emma rolled, we recovered, and - one more tiny foot slip aside - put something on the floor that I’m incredibly proud of. Huge thanks to @keo_motsepe for not only dancing it with us, but also giving me some of the most epic advice along the way. My favorite: “Make the floor your friend.” (as opposed to: “Be light on your feet.”) Also huge shout out to our band, especially singer @travisgarland for always soaring with music I thought would be impossible to cover. (I normally post each dance the following Monday so that the west coast - who would normally have to vote before the show airs there - has something to vote on, but this one needed to be up before #Halloween.)

What a night! We came, we samba’d... we conquered. Many hours of sweat, frustration, and brain overload went into this dance, but right now all I’m remembering is the vibe in the room when we got to the drop. And the fact that Len‘s first comment was, “Tootie fruitie, what a bootie.” Did not see that one coming.

What song am I dancing tonight? Here’s a clue. And what dance? It rhymes with “mamba” and starts with “s”... A few years back I threw myself I to writing full-time and co-created a show with @brandondermer that you can watch on @hulu called #WhatWouldDiploDo? Most physically challenging two minutes of my life. And I loved every second. Getting to channel the energy of this character through this choreography, in this costume, to this song, with this partner... is something I’ll never forget. What you do with all your heart... can be contagious ❤️

For the vast majority of my life, when people asked if I could dance, my answer was “No.” I always felt awkward, like everybody was looking at me and judging. Which sucked because I loved music, and loved moving to it... I just had no idea how to do it well, or without inhibition. Today I’m dancing on live television every week and learning from a world-class professional in the studio Richard Simmons used to teach classes in (he called it “Slimmons” btw 😉). While wearing Cuban heels. Every new dance is a struggle to learn, and every day I still have to fight through inhibition and every week I have a moment where I wonder if I’ll ever get it... and I’m loving it. Because I’m finally in the game. Life is strange... but it’s a hell of a lot more fun when you dance 🕺

Paso doble. If I didn’t love this dance, it would have been impossible. Impossible to learn, to practice or to perform at this level of intensity. It was challenging physically, mentally, even emotionally. But the choreography by the incredible @theemmaslater gave me so much to commit to as an actor... and we worked hard. Really hard. And it was worth it. Most fun I’ve had on this show to date. And that’s saying something. Still buzzing. I will be for some time...

You can’t please all the people all the time...

It’s a reality show. And a dance competition. And one hell of a spectacle. But when the cameras are pointed elsewhere, it’s a bunch of talented people putting themselves out there by trying something they’ve never done before in front of the whole world... and supporting each other through it. Grateful to be a part of this #DWTS cast. 💛

Thrilled beyond belief to announce that another little bundle of joy has picked us to be their family. We chose to have our first ultrasound on camera with our #DWTS crew capturing the result - something I NEVER thought we’d ever do... but @vanderkimberly and I have been through three of those first appointments to discover either no heartbeat, or no baby, and she wanted to share this moment. Miscarriage (a word that needs a replacement - nobody failed to “carry”, these things sometimes just happen) is something that people rarely talk about, and often go through in secret. But there needs to be zero shame around it, or around giving yourself the time and space to grieve. We decided to put ourselves out there - not knowing what we’d find - in an effort to chip away at any senseless stigma around this experience and to encourage people who might be going through it to open themselves up to love & support from friends and family when they need it most. #FlashbackFriday 1999 - For anybody who thinks fame is the answer... this was me at my the peak of early (and sudden) fame - trying my best to be invisible behind a not-yet-famous @fergie at an @nsync concert. My friend @randallslavin took this pic - it’s in his new book (out now) of pics from the last time in Hollywood nobody (but him) had a camera in their pocket. Some great pics & stories. I didn’t know what to do with the energy and attention that came with fame, so I took to hiding in plain sight. My friends back then used to accuse me of altering the cells in my body to become invisible. The beard, the glasses, the cap, the posture, the downward gaze - everything about it says, “Pay no attention to the confused boy in the too-baggy jacket." I just showed this photo to my wife - who met me years after this was taken - and she didn’t believe it was me.”
