LAST SESSION OF THE DECADE. And, what a way to close out! I acquired a new brother while in Switzerland. @russ and I crushed a 2 day shoot with every set up better than the one before. We set our intentions not long ago when we met in Atlanta that we were going to work together. We made it happen and had a blast doing it. Honored to have created with this quality soul. GOD’S SON. December 13, 2002, the incomparable @nas released this incredible album that I was privileged to visually bring to life. I fought hard to be part of this reflective and powerful moment with Nas. I remember him saying “I want to be happy on my cover.” Outwardly, this might not seem overly joyful, but there is great comfort and calm in the quiet moments. Contentment and peace was omnipresent on this beach as the sun set and the light lingered. This image represents one of the more powerful memories from my career. MAGIC. André 3000 by @ugly_kid_gumo! Here’s the story... I reached out to Nicolas (UKG) because I wanted to commission a simple line drawing of a tattoo that he did on someone, fully preparing to pay, but offered a trade of an original Mannion print as an option. The drawing arrived yesterday from France and is absolutely beautiful (see my story today). ON TOP OF the drawing he delivered two beautifully handled watercolors, of which this is one. This one of 3000 (and the other one which I’ll post soon) will be treasured for all time! It is the definition of generosity. Let us stand as a reminder that it’s better to give that to receive as we ease into the holidays. I’m grateful to you, Gumo! You are an incredible talent!

ATL EXCLUSIVE. Massive respect for my new brother for life, @exclusivegame!! As @moetusa and I continue to identify the true #NectarOfTheCulture, we rolled through one of my favorite cities on the planet, Atlanta, to deliver some vibes in the form of this photo session of Tee and an unparalleled seated dinner for 100 on the floor of @statefarmarena, the home of the @atlhawks. Few nights in my life have felt as authentic and connected as this particular one did. We celebrated life!! It’s always important to set the bar. THE STATE VS. RADRIC DAVIS. December 8, 2009 this album was released. Happy 10 year anniversary. Honored to bring this moment to life. @laflare1017’s dedication to this image was phenomenal. In a torrential downpour, we decided to do a shot outside as a metaphor for “rain or shine, the work still happens.” I remembered being barefoot in 6 inches of water sliding around in red clay. And, it was @c.d.o.c that encouraged Dre to get on the mic and deliver the magic, so I thought this image was an appropriate moment of celebration to share with y’all tonight. ONE OF A KIND. Happy Birthday to one of the most unique artists that that Hip Hop has ever seen, Ol’ Dirty Bastard! FADE TO BLACK. On this day, 11/5/2004, Fade to Black was released. This original image was achieved at Jones Beach during a Roc-A-Fella Dynasty performance. Right after I made this image, Jay turned around and said on the microphone “Jonathan Mannion, you’re doing too much.” To which I replied “You’ll see that I did just enough.” This was the at a time when photographers had to KNOW that they had the shot, when they couldn’t see the screen on the back of the camera. This image also made the album packaging to continue my run with Jay. Major shout to @rocnation for always setting the bar high. 50. You’re a one of one, Puff. I salute you for all of your incredible accomplishments and relentless drive to create a life well lived for yourself, your family and friends!! BROOKLYN’S OWN. On this day in 1997 the incomparable Jay Z dropped “In My Lifetime, Vol 1.” For “Reasonable Doubt” we created a true style piece with the concept of family and New York City at the core of the idea. For Vol 1, I felt that it was important to establish the foundation and setting that influenced Shawn Carter; Marcy Houses & Brooklyn in general. Certainly, this was all driven by the music that he was delivering on this album (Where I’m From), but the vision was aligned. I wanted to go to the roots and tell his story of BK as he saw it. Honored to have contributed meaningful visuals to his ascent to the top of the world! 📷 @jonathanmannion
