From our trip today. Thank you @thisisabouthumanity for putting this experience together for us and allowing us to hear first hand stories from those seeking asylum at the border. I’m still trying to find the words to express how this trip has impacted me, but one thing is clear: People of all kinds deserve dignity, kindness and safety when seeking asylum. We can and must do better as a country. (Video credit: @michaelgvids )

(Swipe to see all the photos.) Today I planned a delegation with the incredible @elsamariecollins to a shelter in San Diego which houses families and children recently released from the detention centers and camp across the country. It’s hard to know where to begin in describing what I have witnessed, the stories I heard, and also the importance of the legal communities giving council to those seeking asylum and also those working day in and day out at these shelters to provide safety, comfort and healthcare to them. There is a lot I could tell you about the terrible conditions and stories I heard first hand by the people inside this safe haven—the mother and her 8 year old daughter who were given one burrito and cookies to live off of for five days, how border patrol threw a passport back in her face and laughed after she said she would be murdered if she returned home— there is so much to say about what is wrong with the system and this picture of America, land of the free, and the inhumanity of it all. So instead I’d like to give credit and gratitude to those today who have been on the frontlines for decades. Thank you to Kate Clark and The Jewish Family Services Center @jfs_sd in San Diego for letting us visit today and to Esmerelda Flores from @sdaclu for speaking with us, and those from @catholiccharitiessd as well as the incredible immigration lawyers from @casacornelialawcenter . Where is our humanity. Where is our soul? The foundation of us? #Repost @lisalingstagram ・・・ When I first visited El Salvador in 2006, within minutes of arriving in the capitol, we received a call that a man had just been assassinated a couple of miles from where we were. It was one of numerous murders that took place during the 10 days that I was there. Since then that country has descended into such chaos that its become the most murderous region on the planet. It’s not surprising that Oscar Martinez would want to try and take his beloved Angie and escape the egregious violence and poverty in his home country. What father wouldn’t want to try to provide a better life for his child? Given the role that our country has played in El Salvador’s decades long demise, I wonder what our role should be now be in helping the people most affected by chaos? I will never be able to erase the image of Angie’s arm around her father’s neck as they lay face down in murky waters. This is not who we are.

Men! In honor of #EqualPayDay here is a manifesto you can find in my book, “Era Of Ignition” which highlights the ways in which you can participate in this movement and be the best allies possible to the women in your personal and professional lives. The book goes into greater detail as to why these principles must be foundational; they are a necessary and vital part of how to achieve equality. As Bell Hooks once wrote, “feminism is for everybody.” Go out and get a copy of this book for your favorite man in your life and invite him into the conversation. #EraOfIgnition

Wanda Coleman was my writing mentor, my friend, and my idol. Today during an inspired tribute in her name, with readings from me, Patricia Smith, Jeffrey McDaniel and Kevin Young, we announced the exciting news that a large body of her previously unseen work will be forever archived at The New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. My heart is incredibly full today. . Thank you to the incomparable Kevin Young for making this possible and for spending many countless hours with me going through boxes of her work to bring these archives to fruition. Also thank you to the following people for supporting this monumental effort in the very valuable ways they did: Terrance Hayes, Kate Gale and America Ferrera and Ryan Williams. #WandaColeman

Wonderful piece in The Wrap on #eraofignition and my work with Time’s Up, as well as the exciting adventures ahead for our new FX Show, “Y: The Last Man”. Thank you to Margeaux Sippell for writing this very accurate piece. I love it when a journalist aims to gets it right and then does. ::: “...During the life-changing period for which “Era of Ignition” is named, Tamblyn tells the story of how she broke free from the expectations that came with her past as a child actress, and emerged instead as an outspoken advocate for women’s rights and equal representation. Now, she’s ready to return to the screen for a project that combines her passions for both acting and telling women’s stories...” (link in bio)

The most powerful record you’ll hear all year, by one of the most powerful artists, period. Order it now. #Repost @emilywellsmusic ・・・ Today we premiere a new video for COME ON DOOM, LET'S PARTY. I have inserted myself into found video of climate crisis, dance, and archival protest footage from ACT UP, an organization formed to fight AIDS at the height of the crisis in New York. My movements are actions of love, mimicry, isolated protest. My movements illustrate willful blindness. My movements illustrate a willingness to see. I’m interested in how interacting with digital materials feels different than interacting with people on the physical plane. My movements illustrate this dichotomy. My movements illustrate a fury and a sorrow at the prognosis for our planet. I am interested in the relationship between the history of the AIDS crisis and our current climate crisis and what “silence = death” means in this context. I wish to learn from the activists of ACT UP, the way they took science and knowledge in hand and produced clear solutions that were implemented on a federal level and the way their actions of protest often had a sense of humor, were alive with creativity yet were simultaneously gravely profound. The video falls, I think, more into a cannon of performance based video art than of a traditional music video, though I believe it can serve both forms. Though the work does not directly reference these artists there is a relation to the early video work of Joan Jonas, Laurie Anderson, and Bruce Nauman. In the wake of her death, I dedicate it to the visionary and singular force that is Barbara Hammer. We need a Gran Fury, DIVA -TV, Dyke Dinners. We need to organize like our lives depend upon it. They do. ⚡️thank you @actupny @visual_aids @lgbt_history and @theaidsmemorial for the work you do. ♥️ full video link in bio

This review of my book in LA Weekly just made me cry in a bathroom stall in the airport. Thank you @laweekly and Falling James for this review. For seeing me. “Amber Tamblyn’s latest publication is a multipronged, multilayered Swiss Army knife of a book that unfolds like a beautiful flower spiked with poisonous stingers. . On the one hand, Era of Ignition: Coming of Age in a Time of Rage and Revolution (Crown Archetype) is a fervent call to arms to women and their curious if confused male allies, a heartfelt public exhortation and savvy instructional primer about how to navigate the emotional minefields and institutionalized barriers that prevent women from achieving genuine equality in the workplace and the arts. Yet the nonfiction tome is also a deeply personal memoir in which the writer-director-actor disarmingly reveals her own struggles as an artist, activist and mother in New York City and Hollywood via a series of humbling but inspiring revelations that are woven within a bigger story that boldly confronts systemic abuse and pervasive discrimination by men in power...” (Full review in my bio)

Today on International Women’s Day, I’m giving a shout out to the women I have been through hell and back with. The women I don’t get to see enough, but when I do, we pick right back up where we left off. The women I have held and the women who have held me, both literally and metaphorically. The women I have acted with, got in fights with, wiped up a dance floor with, cried at each other’s weddings with, kissed each other’s brand new babies with, drank a LOT of wine with, had sleep overs with, had meltdowns with, and had life altering experiences with. Here’s to all the sisterhoods out there, who have done the same for each other. Tag your favorite girlfriends and women in your family in the comments below and tell them why they matter in this world. By doing so you will automatically enter them for a chance to win a personally signed copy of my book, Era Of Ignition, from me.

Here I am feeling like a proud directing nerd, beside myself with joy because I’ve spent the last two days participating in The Sundance Institute’s Lab intensive for second time filmmakers, workshopping my next feature film (co-written by @eddied4me ). This experience has been profoundly wonderful and also healing, for many reasons. I’m ever grateful and can’t wait to bring my next film into the world. #Repost @sundanceorg ・・・ Meet the 2019 FilmTwo Fellows of the 4th annual FilmTwo Intensive—supported by #UFEG.

(international shipping included.) #InternationalWomensDay #InternationalSisterhood #EraOfIgnition
