I wrote this for New York Magazine’s The Cut on the Oscar nominations. :::::: “My father, the actor Russ Tamblyn, has been a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences since the early ’90s, a privilege that allows him to vote for the Academy Awards every year. He takes his membership and voting very seriously and always attends as many Academy screenings as he can, taking diligent notes on the films he saw and loved and casting his vote with enormous pride. Growing up in Los Angeles, I went to many of those screenings with him at the legendary Samuel Goldwyn Theater, with its plush blood-red velvet seats and massive glowing screen bookended by two towering gold Oscar statues. But when I looked around at the Academy audience, I rarely ever saw any members who were women, and I almost never saw members who were women of color, save for a rare icon like Nancy Kwan, who, up until this year’s Crazy Rich Asians, was one of the very few Asian-American actresses to star in a major Hollywood movie since her film debut in 1960. What I saw in the Academy’s membership were other white men like my father, so I grew up believing that this is where I should expect to see myself in the pantheons of patriarchal clubs: always as a guest of an old guard, never as a gerent alongside her own peers. . So it was a complete surprise when last year, in 2018, I was finally invited to become a voting member of AMPAS myself, even though I’ve worked for more than two decades in film and television as an actress, director, and screenplay writer. The Academy has made strides to bring more women into its voting body in the last few years, but this year it’s apparent that when it comes to who is nominated there is still a long way to go. On Tuesday, the announcement of the 91st Oscar nominations entirely left out women’s cinematic contributions to some of its top categories, including Best Director, Achievement in Editing, Achievement in Cinematography, and Achievement in Music, among other categories. That this continues to happen every year, regardless of AMPAS’s growing membership inclusion, is alarming, but not surprising...” (full piece in my bio)

I have more to say on this, which is now in an op-Ed for The Cut. Link in my bio. *Side note: please read some of the comments below and see how severe the systemic problem of inclusion truly is, but also, the perception of said problem. People here are saying “well maybe women just didn’t deserve to be nominated.” Deserving it is not the issue, guys. These award shows and their nominations reflect a much deeper and wider problem that demands your attention. And for those of you asking me to give examples of how women of all kinds of representations are left out, please read the latest Annenberg Institute Inclusion Initiative and be responsible for your own learning. (I say this only with the upmost love.) @inclusionists *

Behind every powerful man who paved a way in this world was a woman who got him there. Today, I celebrate the work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but also his wife and partner in power, Coretta Scott King. She informed and influenced many, teaching and educating about world peace and equality while also working through the strains of a complicated and challenging marriage, like most women do. There would be no #MLKday without her. Remember that.

While preparing for next week’s crucial midterm elections, I’ve thought a lot about the type of voters who will have a large impact on its outcome: white women. Women like my cousin in New Hampshire who is very much a part of that 53% of white women who voted for Trump, who has continuously and blindly voted against the safety and well being of minorities— the type of white woman any progressive liberal white woman like myself wishes to distance herself from and disavow entirely. But staying present and engaging with women like my cousin is crucial right now and the real work we must be doing. Sweeping the shame of our extended family member’s racism, sexism, neglect and selfishness under the rug doesn’t make it go away— it just makes it become someone else’s problem to clean up. That someone else is everyone else who is not white. . For generations, black and brown women have been demanding white women step up and take the burdensome onus of these conversations on our selves— to speak to our own communities about what we need from them. Women from Rebecca Carroll to Ijeoma Oluo to Audre Lorde have been writing about white women’s complacency and willingness to undermine humanity in exchange for their own comfort. But it’s time for white accountability. Because it’s not enough just to show up for marches in pussy hats and protests with painted signs once or twice a year—we must also show up in more uncomfortable ways, like confronting our own family members with as much passion and stamina as we confront the phone lines of our elected officials. We must bang down the existential doors not just of the Susan Collins of the nation, but of the white women we have emotional access to— our relatives and friends. The day of “No Politics at the dinner table” is gone; liberal white women need to speak directly to the women who’s ears we are privileged to have, not just who’s company we like to keep . This weekend, I’ll be picking up the phone to call my cousin. To challenge her. I’ll keep calling for the rest of our lives. Won’t you join me? #WhiteWomanToWhiteWoman #accountability

Dear Georgia, for more than ten years, I have called your state a home away from home. Whether coming for the holidays, or trips to Lake Lanier, or showing our daughter the Georgia Aquarium Or Atlanta’s Light Up The Sky Festival, we love Georgia. My husband’s whole family lives there and I cannot think of a better candidate for Governor than Stacey Abrams. She embodies everything I’ve come to love about your great state: Honest, tough, smart and filled with an inspired vision for the future. As she says in her own words: “Georgia will educate bold and ambitious children from cradle to career.” Her policies from healthcare to job growth and opportunity are incredibly strong. So please don’t sit this one out. Vote for Stacey Abrams now, or on Nov. 6th. She is a fearless leader and the pulse of the Peach State. I can feel it. Can you? #staceyabrams2018

When I am heartbroken and unable to explain the full extent of how I feel, I return to poetry. I return to the poem. This one is for all of you today. What I will be is a temper’s plume, a flame abandoned, a root unearthed, an ill soil; useless mud-slung, dirt-owned, dirt-kicked, buried. . What I will be is a busted hell, a barb wired gust, knocked out, gut punched, a screaming burst, screaming injustice, screaming what about us, screaming we are here, screaming look me in the eye screaming it doesn’t matter screaming why screaming I can’t screaming I must. . What I will be is fury fine-tuned, focus forgotten, depression’s muse. A bodiless prayer unheavened. . What I will be is a drifted force, a worthless try, a measured failure. A failed measure. . I wrote a short piece for The New York Times. I still have hope. In spite of it all. ::: “America’s never-ending procession of survivors of sexual assault and harassment being disbelieved has me thinking about something I wrote a few weeks before the #MeToo movement broke wide open — an essay that, for me, felt less like an opinion and more like a desperate declaration. I told a story about a famous older actor who hit on me when I was 16 years old; he called me a liar online, and his followers jumped to brand me as unbelievable. I proclaimed that I was done with not being believed, a sentiment that resonated for any woman who has ever told her story or been intimidated into not telling her story. Today, I find myself wondering what has changed. I watched a measured and reserved Christine Blasey Ford face a firing squad of male Republican senators as the man she accused of sexually assaulting her wielded a type of raw, emotional freedom that women have rarely been allowed to display. Watching her story essentially be discarded by the Senate felt like the reflection of the universal woman’s experience, an all too familiar reality. But the truth is, absolutely everything has changed for us, however incremental those changes may be. Women and survivors are no longer asking for permission to speak. We are forcing the world to listen — and in doing so, to change.”

I’ve posted this before and I’m posting it again to remind you of our history. To remind you how they have depicted, portrayed, mocked, shamed and silenced women since the beginning. Never forget. Never forget the sexism and racism. How our stories and bodies have been used and turned against us. Be angry today. This fight is far from over. Be fueled.

Today and tomorrow and the next day. #Repost @amypoehlersmartgirls ・・・ . What I Will Be . Dedicated to Dr. Christine Blasey Ford by @amberrosetamblyn . . What I will be is devastated. Song gutted, quiet hymned, collapse hummed. . What I will be is inward tuned, shock stricken, numb held, blood sore, heartsick-stained, sonnet shelved. . A failed measure. . What I will be is here. Alongside you. Alongside us. Until the powers that be someday become the powers that once were.

Be fueled.
