Getting to know the #whitemountains in #newhampshire...a beautiful snowy and tough wonderland hike up 4,000 feet to a socked in ridge on #mountlafayette, frigid and howling with wind. We copied how the locals slid down the iciest parts. Grateful so many beautiful places are accessible from #Harvard, so that after co-leading classes such as Gender Violence: Law and Social Justice, I can air my mind and soul. #getoutside

Friends, as you may know, I have been able to travel to the Congolese bush to live with the bonobos (the least known of the great apes) and they are our closest relatives, and they are easy to love. Unlike chimps, they are egalitarian, and there is zero sexual coercion or infanticide. Female coalitions underpin stable and peaceful communities, they help each other whether they are related, know, or like each other. They have empathy and lots of it! They are highly endangered, and I was deeply distressed to learn that two bonobos, including a female of reproductive age, were poached days ago. Dear Friends, I have been watching with dismay the seemingly frequent deaths of young girls from Female Genital Mutilation, , most recently Nada Hassan Abdel-Maqsoud, a girl in Egypt who died a week ago at the age of 12. My hero for the day is Dr. Afrah Thabet Al-Ademi, obstetrician, from Yemen. I spoke alongside her at today's launch of @UNFPA's 2020 humanitarian appeal. She's courageous and inspirational, and so humble! The reality faced by women and girls in #Yemen is terrifying: Every two hours, a woman dies giving life. Six out of ten births take place without a skilled birth attendant. This is the reality for 6 million women and girls of childbearing age. That's why UNFPA is appealing to the international community for $683 million this year to support 48 million women, girls and young people in Yemen and 56 other countries facing humanitarian emergencies. It’s energizing and inspiring to be in @elizabethwarren grassroots field offices in #newhampshire, meeting and watching hard working volunteers, and seeing her practical and transformative plans slathered all over the walls. I had a ball calling $3 and $5 donors, hearing their voices, and thanking them for their efforts making calls and knocking on doors - sharing with folks why they love Elizabeth. Every time I connect with another voter and supporter, I become more fired up and hopeful. We deserve better and Elizabeth has the big vision, the moxie, the character, the working class background, tender heart for people, and the grassroots movement across the US to be the president our country needs and is yearning for. 🇺🇸 #2020

In the midst of everything else that is happening in our country and world, I had to get outdoors yesterday - and what a reward I had. So I thought I would post these images of a for real and rare #snowowl we saw several yesterday at the Parker River National Refuge in Massachusetts. She flew here from the Arctic, and it was a wonder and delight to see her in person. I feel unbelievable gratitude and awe for having stumbled upon her - especially knowing how many other birders were out there who didn’t get a chance to see a snowy owl yesterday! We also saw a peregrine falcon, northern harrier hawk, a short eared owl, and many other treasures. #birding #nationalparks #getoutside

Our next stop with @nhforwarren was in Lebanon. I talked with some hard-working #TeamWarren organizers. They are out every day making the case for @elizabethwarren to voters all across New Hampshire.

Excitement! My first of many stops today was Hanover, where I talked #NHpolitics with a group of wicked smart college students. Many of them will be knocking on doors and making phone calls for @elizabethwarren over the next 2 weeks. Big, structural change starts with volunteers like us! Hello, my dear mountains, where I come simply to be and to hike the solitary back country. The great #Smoky Mountains National Park, my Avalon, where I can sink my #Appalachian roots deeply into the soil even when it’s frosty and frozen. I love the park when it’s empty, and these hikes have given me a chance to reflect on my year. As usual, it has been a rich one, filled with progress, and unusually, physical pain (a 4 1/2 month siege migraine that saw me in the hospital three different times (that Chinese medicine healed) and included a 30 pound weight gain that I’m only now able to address by hiking 50+ miles in 5 days), my appointment at the Women and Public Policy Program at the Kennedy School Government at Harvard University, the upcoming Harvey Weinstein rape trial, and special times with my beloved family and friends. The Secretary General of the UN honored me with a lovely award, which merely brought Necessary attention to vulnerable girls and women in complex humanitarian settings world wide and how @unfpa seeks to meet their sexual and reproductive health rights and needs. And, I made yet another two trips to the Democratic Republic of Congo to see the endangered bonobos with my love. I am happy, whole, I feel useful and loved, at peace with my Creator, and know that while life isn’t always fair, it is good.@greatsmokynps #getoutside

Last night, @abcnews @nightline aired a segment featuring an interview with Donna Rotunno, the attorney for Harvey Weinstein, ahead of Weinstein’s criminal trial on charges of rape and sexual assault in New York next month. In response to the segment, 21 women who came forward to report Weinstein’s sexual misconduct issued the following statement.

I stand in #solidarity with the #Harvard Graduate Student Union as they #strike for better wages, benefits, and against harassment. Proud to see them out there holding their line and being fierce. I love my life at Harvard and yet I obviously recognize no instituon is perfect. I expect my school to lead, grow, and do better. This woman, @seanecorn opened my heart, mind, spirit, and certainly my body to vinyasa flow yoga in (or around) 1996. We would practice at @yogaworks in Santa Monica, CA, where so many teachers who are today legends were throwing it down for 6 bucks a class. We became friends when I passed her a note of appreciation after a class, thanking her and saying “I keep you in my prayers”, because I could feel how very much of her self she gave, gave, and gave. She has grown, through sheer force of will and ongoing surrender and willingness to face and embrace every (every!) part of her self, light and dark. Seane is the embodiement of grace, humor, power, and transformation. She takes each of us on a journey, starting exactly where we are, inviting each of us to take just the step that is right for us. It’s both personal and universal, which makes her so effective. Being her sister is unbelievably fun, full of raunchy humor and tenderness, and is incredibly passionate, raw, honest. Remembering these two extraordinary loves of my life on #nationaldogday #shug & #buttermilk. This is Amazonia, an especially engaging and interesting to watch female #Bonobo. Bonobos are endangered and exist only in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Amazonia is member of the Fekako Community which has been gently overtime habituated to the presence of human trackers who observe for research this fascinating, egalitarian, peaceful species. Unlike our other closest relatives, #chimps (and unlike us as of yet!) bonobos are female male co-dominant and live in a stable society based on female coalitions. A female is always the highest ranking member. Males gain reproductive success by the presence of a strong mother. “Mamas boy” is both necessary and a compliment. Bonobos, crucially, are entirely free from sexual coercion. There is not a single documented episode of killing or infanticide. If a male happens to aggress (chasing a female for example, never beating, whereas 100% of female chimps are severely beaten), females call to each other and correct the male, and order is restored, often by grooming. Bonobos are very sexual creatures, using copulations initiated often by females to reduce stress. When communities come across each other they share food and have other social interactions such as sexual contact. There may occasionally be conflict but nothing lethal. We get up about 3:30 am to walk for a few hours to arrive at where the bonobos nested in treetops the night before. Sometimes I’ve had to wade rivers in the dark, up to my waist, barefoot, as part of the treck! The nearest village from where we camp, is an hour and a half away through the rain forest and the girls there and I now have a tradition dancing. The men drum for me, and the older guys’ portrait is clan elders. This is my third trip to be with the bonobos. At Affenberg Salem nearly 200 Barbary macaques ( #endangered) roam freely in a 20 ha forest. As you enter the park you can observe the monkeys living as they would in the Atlas mountains of Algeria and Morocco. A path guides you through the monkeys‘ home range in the middle of a beautiful forest. The head primatologist does an incredible job, and has had success introducing macaques born and raised here into the wild. Plus there is one of the largest stork colonies in the world, a garden, and homemade food! Magical place. #affenbergsalem #germany #amiinswitzerlandyet

So, I was surprised and delighted when my phone rang a few weeks ago and the voice on the line said “Hi, Ashley, it’s Senator Kirsten Gillibrand!” We met some years ago, having been on a panel together, and I remembered her as being both energetic and kind. At the time, I was preparing to run for office and she was generous with time and frank in discussing the work/life demands and balance of public service. She asked me to have lunch, and she was whip smart, fun, interested in the people around her, kind, spirited and had a calm and focused energy. I know her work as a brave voice calling out the rampant and deplorable sexual assault by American men in our military against American women in the US military, and demanding proper and effective reforms of that violent and unjust system. She’s also a pro-choice and pro-family and has recently demonstrated her ability to be bold and hold her line. I am not yet endorsing any candidate for president. I would very much like to see Senator @KristenGillibrand make it to the debates. Her voice needs to be there. I have made a donation to her campaign and I hope you’ll do so, too.
