Thank you @theranchmalibu for an amazing 4 day plant-based and wellness retreat!! I forgot what it feels like to be looked after so well! Here are some more pics of @oh_momoko and I and what we ate since a lot of my friends are texting me going ‘what is this enchanting place?!’. When I was first told of the Ranch I heard ‘vegan food’ and ‘retreat’ so I was like ‘YUM yes’. I actually did not realise it was a fitness and health retreat and when I found out we’d be focusing on our bodies entirely for 4 days I panicked a bit. I am very cautious about body stuff as I am focused on never getting overly identified with my image. I was a bit terrified of what emotions would come up if I spent an entire long weekend focusing on improving my relationship with food. And emotions DID come up and I had a good cry in front of two perfect strangers but once that passed I realised I’ve outgrown this anxiety and that I’m mentally tougher than I thought. I don’t need these old stories and attachments. I can face my issues and not have a meltdown. My therapist gave me this mantra to repeat ‘I am not the body, I am not even the mind’ and I think when you accept that truth you can appreciate and work on your health away from the storm of your emotions and from a place of gratitude and grace for your body. It’s late, but I hope that makes sense 😅 Thanks @theranchmalibu for creating a beautiful, supportive space to do some deep healing and introspection. 🙏🏻 . p.s. All the books I’m reading at the moment! 📚 I’ve been traveling and meeting lots of you cool people for conventions and podcasts this month and it’s been a bit of sensory overload so a retreat from the world feat. books + Puff was called for. With the ChickPeeps back I am back to reading piles of great vegan books such as @joyfulvegan’s whom I interviewed on episode 2 of the pod. Activists don’t speak enough about incorporating joy into one’s work and Colleen is addressing this in a beautifully eloquent way. I read @wearetheweather because to be completely honest I was finding it really hard to care about climate change. All the facts felt so remote and abstract to actual life. Well that book made climate change tangible and human and not just a pile of inconceivable statistics. If you’re struggling to care about the climate crisis but know you should, check it out. Also Grilled by @leahgarces who I interviewed last week and who is breaking down the barriers between farmers and animal activists in a profoundly meaningful way. She’s one of the smartest activists out there. And then because even I need to take a lil break from vegan scheming sometimes I am escaping into my friend @shaunbarger’s mega science fiction novel #MageAgainsttheMachine in the evenings and loving it. So proud of how committed you are to telling stories and sharing the worlds your imagination has built! And lastly, Quiet by Susan Cain which has made me partly feel better about being an introvert and also a bit mad at society for how easily it overlooks us!! Quiet does not = has nothing to say. It means we are thinking more deeply and deliberately. I’m still trying to find my way as an introvert in public. In lots of ways my career path doesn’t suit my nature but I know my mission here so I’m trying to find ways of balancing being a quiet person with a need to express. Yayyyyy ChickPeeps, I’m SO happy to share that my podcast starts its second season next Friday, Nov 1st, aka World Vegan Day 😉 With some magical new artwork by @venus_in_fake_furs . It has been over a year since we finished our first season and I’m very sorry for the wait. I won’t thank you for your patience because you peeps didn’t have a choice 😅 BUT I will say thank you to the many lovely people who left messages and comments saying they missed the pod and it helped them on their vegan journey and that they were eagerly awaiting season 2 - every one of those messages meant a lot to me and motivated me to get it together! Tbh at the end of last season I was totally burnt out from podcasting as I really didn’t know how to run things when I started. I think only fellow podcasters know how organised you have to be to run a podcast! There were a lot of frantic 4am editing sessions and tearful phone calls to tech-savvy friends and it felt impossible to run it smoothly. But hearing how much people missed it motivated me to get organised and learn how to do this properly. Now I’m happy to say we have expanded our team, we have a fantastic editor and consultant in @andrewsims, a new graphic designer, a shop, sponsors even!!! 👫👫It’s all getting supes profesh!! 👩🏼‍⚖️So thank you for your interest and love for the show and to my brilliant team for helping us get back on our feet. If you’re new to the podcast, it’s a vegan and animal rights pod where we discuss news, questions, conundrums, stories, controversies etc within the vegan world in fun and upbeat discussions. Morning peeps 👋🏻 Wanted to share some words about the creative process written by my amazing teacher and friend @in.spiritus cos they reeeeally hit home with me. Lately I am very much in grind-mode with working on my podcast and writing. It’s what I need to do but it can be lonely and isolating and not super fun. I love to be performing and sharing my work and struggle to feel connected to the world when it’s time to do some internal work. And then I feel frustrated with how slow my process is. I feel like I’m failing to keep up. But Catherine reminded me that our creative cycle has a different pace to society, and that societal pressure will only burn us out. She articulates it so beautifully: “Here in the northern hemisphere we have 4 seasons. Spring where pretty much all the real work and growth is happening under the ground, summer where things start to blossom, autumn where we reap the harvest and winter where we and the earth rests and integrates before we plant new seeds after the restorative period in spring and then the cycle begins again. The modern business / life model is that we should always be in Summer & Autumn. Creation and Abundance, Creation and Abundance. I see it all the time. Well the earth doesn't work like that as we can see by how we are depleting her resources. She needs time to rest. And we don't work like that. This is how burnout happens, how we lose our creative spark and generally over time become miserable because it's unsustainable. And the thing about this constant Summer & Autumn model is that it is built on fear and lack. So next time you find yourself in this loop ask yourself am I in my Spiring / Winter period and maybe all the 'work' is going on internally or privately away from the world. But this is what gives you roots and confidence for when you step back out in your own Summer / Autumn period. Does that make sense?” 🌳🍁❄️🌱

Happy 6th Birthday to the sublime magical creature that is Lilac Puff! 😺 6 years worth of fluffy love!! Thanks @styngvi for this gorgeous drawing of me and the floof! 💛☺️ A few years ago a psychic told me Puff came into my life to teach me how to look after myself and though that sounded cute it was also a maddening statement at the time, as Puff is the kind of cat who bites me awake at 5am just to hang out, pees outside her litter box when there is more then 1 mess in there and screams the house down at least once a day to be taken outside or to the park. She is the messiest, most demanding little queen I’ve ever met and she does not take gracefully to the kind of defining characteristics that make cats self reliant. I questioned that psychic’s statement mannnny times over the years. BUT having someone so helpless, so innocent, and SO lovable depending on me to make her life lovely has made me be responsible in ways I wouldn’t have done for myself alone and strangely enough, she HAS gradually made me tackle bad habits and straighten my life out, even though it absolutely wasn’t by her own example 😅 So thanks for making me be a better grown-up, puffball! Hello instafam! I just took a week off my regular life + social media and it was RADICAL. I told everyone I was going on holiday but I did not go on holiday! I stayed home and hibernated. I was feeling burnt out and like I needed a holiday from being me so that’s exactly what I took! Here’s what I did instead of my norm. I made lots of smoothies. I took some aerial silks classes. I took down all the books I was intimidated by and I read 3.5 of them. I planned to read 10 but I watched a lot of Friends too. I went and bought blonde dreads and sat and braided them into my hair for 5 hours while listening to Stephen Fry’s Mythos. I realised that blonde dreads, much to my surprise, are NOT a good look for me so I took them back out. Stephen Fry definitely felt like my closest friend this week and that made me understand all the friends I have who listened to the HP books rather than read them. I used to think listening to the books was cheating but now I realise it’s a completely different experience. Sometimes I cheated and went on social media and I pretended I was a ghost looking in at the world after I’d died. I went and got measured for a bra because I’ve never done that because I have been so secretly disgusted by being a woman for years that I didn’t want to know what truthful bra size I am and could live in blissful ignorance and would just repeat the same safe little numbers to people who dared ask. I sat in the park for a couple hours after, covertly scrutinising the chests of other women and trying to come to terms with the fact that I, too, am a normal woman. I had an unprecedented amount of imaginary conversations with men. I brought Puff to the park. I watched lots of DWTS rehearsal videos and wondered what else I could learn if I had more self belief. I read about Britney Spears’ conservatorship. I love Britney Spears. It was such a good week. I strongly recommend taking a few days off being yourself. Life is so fast paced. It is so structured and dogged and relentless that you don’t actually get the time to ask who am I? What do I love? What am I doing it for? But if you make your world quiet and tune back into yourself again the answers are there.

She also writes a monthly column in @veggiemagazine that educates readers on everything about vegan beauty from the use of palm oil in cosmetics to what’s really going on with animal testing in China. I learn sooooo much from her work, her account and her integrity. We are in our 8th month of running this company and it’s been amazing to witness it growing and evolving week to week, thanks to the support of so many of you. I was initially so wary about combining activism with business as in my mind business meant compromise and soulless consumerism and profit over ethics and I did not trust that vegan ethics would be prioritised above all else. And then I met Daniella who was not only an ethical vegan but an ethical vegan entrepreneur and I’ve learned from working with her that one of the most effective forms of activism is to put your time and energy into creating things that will bring about the world you want to see. Not for a moment does Daniella sit around railing about the way things are, criticising people who aren’t vegan yet, dwelling on how much we have yet to do. She spends every day thinking up and then making new, fun, innovative, easy, beautiful ways to make veganism more accessible to others. Every day she is creating something or refining it. She has taught me so much about how to spend one’s energy wisely, how choosing where to spend your energy is maybe the most important decision you’ll make every day as an activist. And when you invest your energy into the things you love they’ll inevitably flourish. Ooooh guys guess what day it is?! @kinderbeautybox reveal day! This month our theme for the box is SLEEP (+ red lipstick because we make the rules!!) I bloody love sleep. I consider it a VERY underrated self care and mental health practice. I’ve noticed people tend to brag about how little sleep they get and I’m not down with this! This messed up idea that you have to be relentlessly sleep deprived in order to get things done. I used to be really ashamed of how much sleep I get when everyone else seems to function on 5 hours and then a friend dubbed me ‘queen of sleep’ and I was quite thrilled by that title and now I embrace it :) You’re far more alert and productive if you prioritise sleep, and in a better mood too. Can we start a new trend where we brag about how MUCH sleep we unashamedly get? I’ll start!! 9 hours baby!! And there is still time for reading and working and socialising. There is no shame in having strict boundaries for self care and if you need more sleep, then you go get it. Ok that’s my ode to sleep! Happy Birthday to one of the best humans to be walking this earth @itselliotknight! What another fun year it’s been being your friend, all of these pics and videos make me lol 😂 Doesn’t matter that I haven’t met most people, when I befriended Elliot 7 years ago (!) it was such a thunderbolt of joy and inspiration that I was like ‘oh ok this is how I want to feel around all people!’. Well, turns out that’s a tall order, Elliot is apparently powered by the sun, glowing from the inside out, endlessly loving, absurdly talented, psyched about life and always, ALWAYS dancing and singing his way from a to b. But the BEST thing about him is how generously he shares his sun beams with everyone else. Literally, you make everyone love themselves again. To spend a day, an hour, a dance with Elliot is to be reminded how FUN life is, how much there is to learn, how many vegan doughnuts to track down, words to make up, beats to jam to, Pokémon to catch, tombs to raid, the list goes on and on and will never end. Please, whenever you’re not so busy being a brilliant actor and icon can you start a spiritual community where you teach people how to be warriors of fun and dance?! We all forget too often.
