Solar is innovation. Solar is clean energy. Solar is BEAUTY. According to the latest IPCC report we only have 12 years to rapidly decarbonize our economy in order to avoid the worst effects of climate change. The new solar facility in Pitkin County would reduce carbon emissions from their sanitation operations, taking the first step toward carbon neutrality. While this project will not solve our climate crisis it is a step in the right direction and that’s what we need a lot of, at every level, in every sector right now. Small incremental change adds up! It’s actually the story of how I became an Olympian and the message behind @alex_bottle . It’s our small everyday actions that take us from ordinary to extraordinary! Click the link in my bio to learn more about the Pitkin County solar project.

As human’s living down on earth with very real daily responsibilities and circumstances, it can be easy and quite normal to fall into a tunnel vision perspective of checking things off our ‘to do’ list and getting through another day. Asking the questions, can one person really make a difference? Do my decisions, choices and actions really matter? Today I had the incredible privilege to pull back and get an aerial perspective with @ecoflight and some of our nation’s top climate researchers from @earthinstitute @columbialamontearth and I can say that from that higher perspective the answer is YES. Yes everything is interconnected. Yes nature is powerful and resilient and yes it is also incredibly fragile because when we do threaten it, it’s all connected! Yes it matters if we are conscious of our choices. Yes the choices we make create a ripple effect- spreading and influencing in ways that we cannot always see. Yes one person caring and standing up for the things we care about whether it is our oceans, forests, our national parks and wild lands, rivers, energy, transportation, wildlife, indigenous peoples, and our changing climate- it all matters because it’s all connected. In terms of climate change- we need to see change within the next 8 years. We can choose to think that our situation is dire and give up hope. Or we can fight like hell for the things we value, love and cherish in this world. That in itself is a CHOICE. I choose to enjoy this life I’ve been given AND do all I can to stand up for, use my voice, my platform, and my daily actions to support our transition into what it’s going to take to create that change. If this fires you up and you want to take action there are two things you can do. Today @protectourwinters is hosting a Happy Hour to discuss it’s 2020 strategy and vision at Marble Bar Aspen from 5-7pm. If you can’t make it, then click the link in my bio to subscribe to receive climate news and action from POW today!

Plastic pollution kills more than one million seabirds each year. When we beach recklessly, life in and around the ocean suffers. This summer the goal is to #RestoresyourShore as we move towards July 5th - the dirtiest beach day of the year. It’s on ALL OF US to protect our oceans and beaches from plastic with a year-round effort. Repost with #RestoreYourShore and @reef will donate $5 to @surfrider to support The Better Beach Alliance. Ditch the red solo cup this year and go reusable with @alexbottle Cheers friends 🙏

Tomorrow I’ll be taking my dear friend Jayne Gottlieb’s @aspenshakti Buddhi Immersion and Teacher Training. And who knows where that will lead! This is a practice that quite literally has changed my life. It has taught me how to nurture myself, cherish myself, celebrate my femininity, my sensuality, my sexuality and live my fullest self expression in the world. See below for the description and join me because there are still spots left! Inside each of us lives an untamed power/energy that wants to be expressed and unleashed in order for us to experience our highest potential and most radiant selves. This powerful and dynamic yoga technology focuses on awakening, igniting and channeling SHAKTI so that the entire nervous system can exist at optimal vitality. From a more scientific lens - the practice strengthens the nervous system, more specifically the connection between the physical, emotional, and energetic bodies. This will shake up and out anything that is stuck, stagnant, no longer serving your vitality nor the best version of yourself. It will transform you if you truly dedicate yourself to it. The focus of this training, unlike many others out there, will not be perfectly formulaic nor mimicable. This training is about inspiring and pulling out the natural teacher/leader inside each participant and empowering participants to create and offer up this work as their own masterpiece, (or work in progress). It’s aim is to extricate the Guru inside each trainee and to help harness his/her magic to inspire, challenge and motivate future students and build unwavering confidence inside. The curriculum uses improv, kriyas, breathwork, archetype work, self study, monologue/scenework/theatre, voice and projection, yoga principles and universal truths, conscious language study, dance techniques, plyometrics, anatomy and kinesthesiology to serve this mission. The practice itself, as well as the training empowers students to breakthrough stuck energy or self-destructive patterns that may affect their day to day lives as well as inevitably impact their leadership skills as a yoga practitioner. It was an honor to be recognized as a pioneer athlete and humanitarian at @boafitsystem last night alongside BOA’s founder Gary Hammerslag. BOA has been a part of my snowboarding career since the beginning and it was incredible to see how far the company has come. A business that started out with an innovative idea...replace traditional shoelaces in snowboard boots with a faster more convenient method. Now the company and the idea has expanded far beyond snowboarding and is helping the best gear in golf, running, work wear, hiking, fishing and hunting, and the medical world become even greater~ Last night we discussed what it means and what it takes to be a pioneer. To me the answer has always been about a willingness to risk it all for a dream no one else can see but you. For me that’s looked like choosing to pursue a career as a professional snowboarder long before snowboarding was even allowed on most mountain resorts around the country. That evolved into then having the courage to use my platform and voice as a professional snowboarder and Olympian to raise awareness and influence action on climate change before I knew if my actions would be accepted or not, by my sponsors and fans within the snowboarding world. Taking that stand then lead to becoming an entrepreneur and small business owner of innovative reusable products which has been perhaps to date, one of the most challenging pioneering efforts of all! So It was beyond inspiring for me to learn more about Gary’s story and the evolution of BOA and how they’ve come to be such a force in the corporate world. It gave me hope and lit a fire within me that one day @alex_bottle might follow in their footsteps....of course, in our own innovative way😉

Click the link in my bio for a deeper dive into all the issues on your ballot, so that you can be an informed voter tomorrow, in what is most likely, one of the most important midterm elections in history 💪 This administration has attacked our environment and our democracy like no other administration before it....And this administration gained power because so many just didn’t show up. It’s time to course correct. It’s time to elect candidates who we can relate to and who are dedicating themselves to fighting for the same values we believe in and want to LIVE. We must elect candidates who not only believe climate change is real, but are ready to implement policies that actually address it RIGHT NOW. It’s time to step into our power people and VOTE! Who’s in??

1 and 3 eligible voters, this election, will be under 35 years old. This is also the category of person in our country that has historically NOT shown up to vote. Every generation needs a new revolution and this is OURS. Political banter on science is a stall tactic that’s left our country inert and living in the dark ages. While other nation’s move forward, innovate, and take action, we’ve been left behind in our denial and are an international laughing stock. Meanwhile climate change is HERE. We are ALL already experiencing the effects. We are already needing to adapt to a new climate. The question is WILL we elect officials, this Nov 6th, who are dedicated to policy solutions that will ensure our choices don’t tip us over into an uninhabitable climate on planet earth? The answer is up to all of us. People always ask me, what can I do to help?  What you can do is pledge to vote with me by texting IWILLVOTE to 52886. You’ll not only be set up with all the voting location details you need, but you’ll also be sent information to make sure you’re supporting the climate champions in your district. Then you can tell everyone you know and love to do the same. We are the revolution we’ve been waiting for. Let’s #denythedeniers #powaf #dropinandvote

The setting? Yosemite National Park, where the father of conservation himself, John Muir, found his calling.  The purpose?  @protectourwinters leadership summit.   #POW is turning our passion into purpose by mobilizing our influential outdoor sports community in becoming impactful, positive climate advocates.  Historian, climate scientist, and POW board member #NaomiOreskes reminded us that history has shown that the market will not magically solve our climate change problem.  Public policy is and has always been the solution to some of humanity’s biggest challenges.  We curbed acid rain, learned how to heal our ozone hole, and have tackled the manipulation tactics of the tobacco industry all through political action.  Yes we do need innovation in the private sector, but we also need innovation in public policy.  That’s why voting in our upcoming midterm elections could not be more important than ever before.  In the Senate, 53 out of 100 members are climate change deniers or skeptics.  In the House of Representatives, 232 out of 435 members are deniers or skeptics.  These officials are blocking the policy we so desperately require to face our challenges.  It’s time to deny the deniers and use the power of VOTE to elect those who are willing to come together around innovative policy solutions.  In the 2014 midterm elections, 87% of 18-29 year olds DID NOT VOTE.  Nonvoters handed Trump the presidency.  We can and we must, change that!  Our planet will survive climate change, it’s humanity that’s on the line.  Text IWILLVOTE to 52886 to make your pledge to vote on or before November 6th and @pow_action_fund will send you everything you need to make the most educated #vote with the environment in mind #powAF #OurTimeIsNow #DropInAndVote #midterms #vote #climatechange #johnmuir

My passion is climbing mountains. Physical and metaphorical...and often times climbing the physical mountains is what prepares and fuels me to tackle the metaphorical ones...you know the experiences that life inevitably throws at us that we would rather run from versus climb? I truly believe we’re given these mountains to climb in order to help us see who we truly are. When we are pushed outside of what’s comfortable, we’re able to learn and grow and become the best versions of ourselves. But what is the best version of ourself? To me, it means being unapologetically unafraid to be who we are. And who we are is different! Who we truly are does not fit into a box. Who we are disrupts the status quo. And that’s SCARY. It takes a lot to sign up to be THAT in the world. So many of us were taught in this society to just “fit in” or “get along” and definitely “don’t rock the boat.“ And so I climb mountains to remind me of who I am, so that I can practice being unapologetically unafraid when I don’t fit in and when I’m rocking the f$&king boat in life...even when I would rather just be quiet. But guess what? The world needs your voice right now. The world can’t afford for you or I to just be quiet. • The good news? Mountains aren’t meant for climbing alone. It’s dangerous and it’s also just not as enjoyable. This was my first time climbing an Aspen 14er. And even though I grew up in these mountains and have had experience climbing peaks, I was a rookie on this day. And when you’re a rookie, you’ve gotta have a good guide! I’m so honored and humbled to have gotten to climb this local (and beyond local) legendary peak with these local (and beyond local) legendary Aspen brothers. Never take climbing mountains lightly. They demand constant awareness, respect, and preparation. Do surround yourself with a good team for optimal enjoyment and safety. And do use these experiences to fuel you in life to be unapologetically YOU💪⛰💋 #OurTimeIsNow #AlwaysLiveExtraordinarily 📸 @pedromcbride (1st & 3rd)

We seem to be living in pressure cooker times. We’re having to adjust to a new climate where extreme storms, flooding, drought, high temps and fire are becoming our new normal. Monitoring air quality ratings is no longer something reserved for those living in city’s like Beijing. It’s something I was actively checking everyday in Aspen, CO this summer before going out and being active due to high amounts of ash in the air from surrounding fires. This is a shot taken by @natgeo photographer @pedromcbride of the Lake Christine Fire that ravaged our Roaring Fork Valley this July and August • Then there’s our President and all of the distractions that come with him. Not only were two more of Trump’s associates convicted of crimes yesterday, but were you aware that the EPA also released details of it’s plan to replace The Clean Power Plan-Obama’s climate change policy which put national limits on carbon pollution from power plants? It was also our countries commitment to upholding our end of the Paris Climate Accord which Trump withdrew us from a year ago.  And the CPP was also going to clean up our air. The Obama administration calculated the CPP would prevent between 1,500 and 3,600 premature deaths per year by 2030 and would reduce the number of school days missed by 180,000 annually. Trump’s deregulation of the CPP follows his roll back of clean car rules that the Obama administration had also put into place- allowing cars to emit more pollution. • All of this can be enough to make a person feel overwhelmed, scattered, distracted, fearful and down right hopeless.  But guess what?  That’s our problem. It’s time to get laser focused on who we are and what matters most in our lives. It’s time to become active citizens. It’s time to elect candidates into office that share our same values and vision of the future. Need help? I’d like to invite you to get involved, follow and stay informed with @pow_action_fund providing you with all the tools you need to show up at the midterms this November prepared and confident to elect climate champions into office and show the climate deniers the door! Retreating into the awe inspiring essence of nature to avoid the troubled and troubling times of our world is not a solution. On the other hand, sacrificing the things that fill us up, that stoke our fire, and bring about clarity and inspiration because we’re too busy trying to make the world a better place only makes us a dog chasing after our own tail. Can we be disciplined enough to see that in order to sustainably be part of solutions in the world, we must consistently and unapologetically take the time to fill ourselves up, to be clear and inspired. 🌟 Tag someone below who embodies this balance and then share either 1) the ways you choose to fill yourself up or 2) the solutions that have come from taking the time to create that clarity and inspiration.

I spend a lot of time in the mountains and snow, but the ocean is my second love. I've surfed breaks all over the world and was shocked to learn in the film @chasingcoral that we've lost 50% of coral reefs in the last 30 years from warming ocean water. That's why on World Oceans Day, I'm taking the Unstoppable Voter Pledge to take action for our ocean. By pledging, you're committing to vote in midterm elections this year and sending a powerful message to candidates that people who care about the environment are showing up. Join me in taking the pledge at UnstoppableVoter.com. If you haven’t already, check out this film too. It’s beautifully done and super educational. And then third action step? Invest in an @alex_bottle reusable insulated mug (link in bio) to help cut down on the 164 million disposable coffee cups that are tossed away daily, many of which end up in our oceans along with all of those single use disposable plastic bottles. We all have a voice, how are you using yours? We all make choices every single day, are you making the long-lasting sustainable ones? We all have a vote, let’s rise up together and use our power! #ourtimeisnow 📸 @tyhaft

We’ve got 1 week left to fund our @kickstarter goal and need your help! Click the link in my bio to get your new @alex_bottle insulated tumbler at an ambassador price and support our mission for a more healthy, sustainable and extraordinary planet (plus see my last post to be a part of my contest giveaway on June 14TH) Chris and I started ALEX because we both grew up as outdoor kids- him in CA by the ocean and me in CO in the mountains. We both became professional snowboarders who chased winters year round, exploring the world as we dialed in our craft. But we started seeing winters shift and change. Climate change was something we witnessed before our very eyes, everywhere. Back in 2009, we saw a simple solution....if every single one of us cut down on single use disposable products by using reusables instead, we would create a collective shift that would lead to massive change. The good news? People are starting to shift their habits and more and more people are using reusable water bottles. The bad news? 1 million plastic water bottles are still being thrown away every minute😬 But now we also have a new stat...164 million coffee cups are being thrown away every day!!! More good news? We still have a major opportunity to clean up our act in a super simple way......use reusable water bottles and use reusable insulated tumblers for your coffee.....and while you’re at it, might as well use products one that are beautifully and thoughtfully designed and carry a powerful message of Living Extraordinarily with it💪🔥🌎 . . . . . . . #actonclimate #everydayeverywhere #alwaysliveextraordinarily #contest #giveaway #kickstarter #sustainablefashion #sustainableliving #sustainability #sustainable

Who’s in??

There are more people that have stood on the surface of the moon than walked through the length of Grand Canyon -- because it is long, hard and there is no trail. My friend @pedromcbride chose the challenge of walking the length of this iconic national park because he wanted to document it before it potentially changes from growing developments around it. 13 months and 750-miles later, he did and now he has a new book showcasing what he captured on one camera.
