This moment is so historic for Latinas everywhere but especially for honoring the contributions of Mexican people to this country. Congratulations Mayes — you’ve already won in our eyes ✨

We just finished our last table read EVER for @howtogetawaywithmurder and I’m having ALL the feels. For the past 6 years, #HTGAWM and this family have made up such a huge part of my life. I had the honor of meeting and hearing from this incredible woman at the 2019 @blkwmnanimate Bootcamp and was blown away by her brilliance, kind heart, and clear vision for an entertainment industry where women not just take up space but also lead. Brenda Gilbert is the Co-Founder & President of BRON Media Corp., and the President of BRON Animation. She has been active in film and media initiatives for more than 20 years producing a number of animated and live action productions. Since co-founding BRON, Brenda and her team have helped fund and produced some incredible projects like Joker, Queen & Slim, Fences, The Birth of a Nation, and so so SO many more. I’m with my @weinspirejustice family in spirit as they both celebrate @janefonda 82nd birthday and protest inaction on climate change! Im especially happy to see them with Mexican American icon and civil rights advocate #DoloresHuerta. A #GreenNewDeal would address climate change while also focusing on racial and economic justice. 150 Entertainment folks celebrated Latinx Heritage Month on Saturday at an amazing event hosted by TimesUp and The Latinx House. It was my honor to help welcome everyone into that space alongside @activistmonicaramirez & to center Latin Americans ahead of 2020. Not only are Latinx people the largest minority electorate but civic engagement in the US affects the entire region from immigration to environmental justice and beyond. Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay and I would like to center and hold up victims of sexual violence. Due to the trauma and negative emotions linked to sexual abuse, survivors are at a higher risk for mental health conditions including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, attachment issues, addiction, and personality disruptions. This is heightened by the way that the criminal justice system places the burden of proof on survivors. (Thank you Netflix and the team behind Unbelievable for bringing awareness to the unfortunate experiences of so many victims.) Having a mental health concern does not make you “weak” or “broken.” People cope with trauma in different ways and there are many resources for victims of sexual harassment or assault including @TIMESUP Legal Defense Fund, @metoomvmt Healing Resource Library, and @risenow.us who helps survivors pass legislation.

This Saturday, I’ll be at the 2019 Black Women Animate Boot Camp on the “Resilience, Impact and Allyship” panel sponsored by @weinspirejustice and moderated by @jlovecalderon. Together with @dawnlyen @mattmcgorry @daynalynnenorth @ketherdonohue we’ll be discussing making a difference, thriving in entertainment, and being an ally to others. Huge thanks to @taylorkshaw and @blkwmnanimate for this opportunity to discuss such important topics in the media space today.

I had such an incredible day yesterday with @culturestrike @bldpwr and @weinspirejustice at ’Climate Woke’! @favianna1 convened storytellers around one of - if not THE most pressing issue of our time, environmental justice, with indigenous people and youth at the forefront. This is something near and dear to my heart especially with increasing destruction across Latin America due to climate change. I had a powerful time and left feeling energized & fired up about saving the planet! 🌎✨

The #ElPaso shooter went literally out of his way (approx. 7 hours) to gun down Mexican people alongside the border. I want to make a few things clear: (1) my castmate Pau is an incredible friend and human being. It’s appalling that she is being slut-shamed for a harmless, fun post. (2) there is nothing a woman can wear... no face or pose she could make... that would provoke or justify sexual violence against her. End of story. . So I am here to stand in solidarity against the sexist scrutiny and those that would like to control our bodies. A woman’s worth and autonomy are not diminished by anything that we do, say, or wear.

Natalia was born into a family of artists and has always had it in her veins to use storytelling to support and defend causes that are important to her such as women’s rights alongside @timesupnow or on campaigns like #YaEsHora. She also brought the story of Rosario Castellanos - Mexican writer and early supporter of Mexican women’s rights - to the screen.
