Congratulations — Year 2, Montana Institute for the Arts #MIA 🧡 You did it!!!

This time, 50 years ago - Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins launched into space. Two of the three astronauts would step foot on the moon, July 20th, 1969. . I stare at this photo taken by astronaut Michael Collins, the command module pilot (who remained aboard the spacecraft orbiting, while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin descended to the lunar surface in module “Eagle.”) . I stare at it and can’t help but summarize what Carl Sagan so famously articulated. Here we all are. Our parents. Our grandparents. All our ancestors. On this big, blue, rotating globe. It took over 400,000 people to work together - men, women, diverse ethnicities, various ages ... to look up, and to decide as a collective - that it’s not some crazy idea to one day stand on the moon. They decided - together - to make something big and conceptual and far away — tangible. It moves me beyond measure to think of this moment in time. To fully comprehend the power of unity. . When Michael Collins was asked what is his strongest memory of this historic mission - he simply responded “Looking back at Earth from a great distance.” . And though the response may have been modest, I have no doubt that his heart was overwhelmed beyond words, and I believe he too was moved by the the extraordinary existence of our beautiful planet - and the endless possibility of what human beings can achieve. Of life itself. . Though you are most likely looking down, reading this text on a mobile device - as I too - am typing it on one. Let’s please remember to raise our eyes from looking down ... to look up ... and to glimpse beyond. For without the desire + inspiration to forge ahead, how can we ever continue to evolve. . I thank these 3 winged heroes - and the 400,000 others who supported their mission - for urging us to continue to dream - and to one day make another impossible ... Possible. .
