On this 50th anniversary of Earth Day I wanted to post this photo from when I got to spend the night on the salt pans in Botswana. There was nothing as far as the eye could see and no sound but my feet crunching upon the earth, the wind and my breath. It was the closest to God I ever felt. Can we just collectively agree to roll it back to last week Thursday so I can have my birthday all over again? Who’s with me?!?

Celebrated Mushu’s 17th year of adoption today with friends and pups who have known Mushu throughout her long and joyful life. That poster in back of us was made from a photo taken on my birthday just 4 days after I rescued Mushu. Mushu was full grown when I rescued her so we can only estimate that she was about a year old making her about 18 years old today. The day I found Mushu I wasn’t out looking for a dog to take home, but I saw her at the Much Love adoption site across from the farmers market and it was an instant connection. I knew from the first moment I saw her that if I didn’t take her home that day I would regret it for the rest of my life. I have never regretted that spontaneous decision ever for the past 17 years. If animals and humans can have soul mates I believe I found mine in Mushu. She has comforted me through break ups and the loss of a parent as well as celebrated and travelled the world with me. So grateful to have shared such a significant part of my life with her. People often worry that rescues are other people’s rejects and that rescues, especially full grown dogs, are difficult to train or have behavioral issues. Anyone who has met Mushu can tell you she was the smartest and greatest dog to be around. I hope our example helps to change that attitude about rescues and encourages anyone looking for a dog to save a dog or cat because you never know, you may find your soul mate, too. Huge thank you to Mushu’s Uncle Grant for catering today’s celebration and throwing the entire party and also thank you to Mushu’s Aunty Shizue who got us the fabulous cake. Made it to two Oscar parties tonight without spilling something or falling on my face, but the night is still young. Thank you to the American Chinese CEO Society for a beautiful Hollywood China Night party and to @SueWongFashion for a rockin’ night and gorgeous dress.

I finally made it to the Oscars! Well a wave form of my voice did. 😝 My dearest friend @deceptionarts (Mark Allen) designed nearly all of the video screens you are seeing in the show (if you are tuning into the Oscars). When they did the category for sound editing, the transition shows sound waves and the second from the top is my voice taken from a voice message I sent him. I’m surprised it’s not more dynamic considering how loud I am. Lol. #Oscars

Been following the incredible artist @therobertvargas for years on Instagram. Watched in awe as he painted murals and portraits around the world. Dedicating his time to bringing his art to underprivileged communities. You can find his work all over downtown Los Angeles and around the world. Today I went to see the genius in person at the @LAArtShow where he was painting live portraits to raise money for @SaintJudesHospitaloffical. Tonight was a Night to Shine. Not for me but for all the buddies who got to attend tonight’s prom for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I had so many gay and geeky friends that I went to a lot of proms as a teen, but this was the greatest! @TimTebow’s Night to Shine prom is all about inclusion and letting these beautiful folks be celebrated and crowned prom kings and queens for the night. Everybuddy gets to be crowned. There’s nothing more pure and joyful then watching these buddies on the dance floor and cut loose with no inhibitions. Throwing it way back to 1985 right after I won the Miss Teen USA pageant and came back to Hawaii to my friends and family who greeted me at the airport with leis. I was whisked off to the governors office to shake hand with Governor George Ariyoshi who congratulated me on my winning. It was weeks after winning and I was still flying high from all the excitement. I don’t think it had sunk in for months. #tbt

Renegade reunion at the Hollywood Autograph Convention last weekend! I’ve known @lorenzo_lamas and @branscombe_richmond forever. 35 years ago Lorenzo hosted the Miss Teen USA pageant that I won and I met Branscombe, a Hawaii boy, just a little while after that when he played my Inuit brother on the hit series Night Court. 10 years after the pageant, I did an episode of their series, Renegade. And then about 20 years after shooting Renegade, Lorenzo was on my team when we won @battleofthenetworkstarz. Just last November, Branscombe played my father on a @netflix film called #FindingOhana. It’s been a long Journey for all of us, but we still here! So glad to reunite with these two amazing men.

So after posting and doing my first live chat celebrating my 100K followers I went back to my feed and saw that I went back down to 99.9K! I actually lost 10 followers during my live chat. Clearly there are some people out there who hate me live. Hahaha. 35 years ago, on January 22, my life took a turn overnight as I had the honor of being crowned Miss Teen USA 1985. The pageant was held in Miami, FL and viewed live by over 50 million people worldwide. As you can see on my face, I was in complete shock. I never would have dreamed that a 16 year old Chinese/Hawaiian girl from a tiny group of islands in the middle of the pacific, with no prior pageant experience, being raised by a struggling single mother, would be chosen to represent the entire country at that time. The significance of winning didn’t even hit me until weeks later when I returned home to friends who told me they watched the pageant on tv and could hear neighbors shouting from down the street when I was announced the winner. Truth be told, I wasn’t even thinking of winning, I just wanted to represent Hawaii well and not fall on my ass on live international television. For 35 wonderful years I have been blessed to have the unwavering support of people from Hawaii and all over the world following and encouraging me on my life’s journey. I wish everyone could experience the kind of love and support I’ve been so lucky to experience for so many years. My mother always said I was born under a lucky star. She was right. Mahalo to those of you who have been there since day one and to all of you who have supported me since then. Jan 17 marked the anniversary of the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy. In 1893 Queen Lili’uokalani was forced to abdicate her thrown. Lead by American and European businessmen, the US Marines were brought in from the USS Boston brandishing weapons to intimidate the Queen into temporarily relinquishing her throne. The Queen had hoped that the US Government would do the right thing and restore the sovereignty of Hawaii back to her, but Hawaii was instead named a protectorate of the US and provisionist government with Stanford B Dole as it's president who, even after then US President Grover Cleveland called the overthrow "illegal", refused to return power. Today, the indigenous people of Hawaii face a new threat on Hawaii’s tallest peak, Mauna Kea, where an international consortium is determined to build a 13th massive telescope desecrating the sacred land (many of the previous telescopes are inoperable and left in ruins on the land). Mauna Kea is considered to be a shrine of worship as home to the gods and the “piko” or navel where life begins. This video pointedly released today by the band @kingdomsuniverse includes scenes from the protest by the Hawaiian people.
