A quick shoutout and thank you to @breitling for my new #Superocean and the chance to help create such a beautiful timepiece. @outerknown created the band from @econylbrand’s recycled nylon and we decided on the color palate together. It’s also been a fun couple of years now working with @stephaniegilmore and @sally_fitz. A few years ago I got pulled over by a cop on the freeway near Long Beach. We got to talking and he told me that he had pulled Kobe over on two separate occasions for driving alone in the Carpool lane. We laughed and wondered out loud how many time he must have done that for him to catch him twice. Not long after that I heard Kobe got smart and was taking a helicopter to games and meetings in LA. Made sense to me. It would’ve been impossible to manage all that he had happening and drive to LA from Orange County and maintain any semblance of a life. Strange now that all that time saved ultimately didn’t amount to more time. I can’t stop thinking about his wife losing a husband and daughter while raising three others. It’s unfathomable, especially with so many eyes on it. I feel horrible for the other less familiar families who lost daughters and parents and partners and are equally devastated and grieving. I only met Kobe briefly a couple of times but I had huge admiration for this guy and have found it tough to find the words to express it the past couple days. Thank you for following your dreams big and small and letting your unadulterated passion for the game reach so many of us in our own little ways. You were a remarkable human. #MambaOut 🙏🏾🏀💔

Random fact of the day. My dad was regular foot but he was blind in his left eye so he never went backhand on lefts, he would switch stance so he could see the wall. Anyway...goin’ left.

So my @wsl Oi Rio Pro Jersey made its way into lower earth orbit on the #ISS to my friend @astro_christina who is spending 11 months up there! (Her side hustle is taking pictures of coastlines/potential surf spots around the globe for me!) We recently did a live chat so I could get the lowdown on the Space Station. This coming Friday we will be doing a live public chat. When I have the details I’ll pass them along. In the meantime, give me some ideas below of questions you would ask an astronaut spending the years in space...what they eat, how they stay entertained, how much time they just gaze at the earth, etc. I wonder if we’ll get any flat earthers? 🤦🏻‍♂️😂🤚🏽🚀🛸🛰

#Bill40 is a Honolulu City & County (Oʻahu) measure to phase out a wide-range of single-use plastics commonly used in food service (plastic straws, utensils, foam, etc.), over a two year period. While it’s convenient to have utensils and such when we can’t access our kitchen at home, the amount of extra garbage created by all of us using single use plastics over the course of a year, decade or lifetime is astounding and not something we can’t live without. Traveling across this world and to very remote locations, I’m always blown away at the amount of garbage either in the rivers in Florida, on the beaches of Hawaii, or on an atoll in the middle of the Pacific. At some point soon we need to decide en masse to start undoing this insanely huge mess we have created on earth, and bills like this are small steps in the right direction to help us all change our actions. Please support and call your local representative to voice your thoughts on this being passed in Hawaii. Here’s to hoping the next generations of kids learn from our mistakes and epiphanies and take the reigns in better directions as the future unfolds. And if you’re not in Hawaii, think about starting a movement to have this implemented in your hometown and keep @kokuahawaiifoundation, @surfrider, and @sustainablecoastlineshawaii informed on your progress!

Watching videos of Denton Miyamura win the first one at Sunset, @brock.little set the bar as a teenager in those early events while Clyde Aikau and Keone Downing took home the wins, getting that first invite in the mail in the early 90’s, seeing Marvin go left, being in disbelief when @darrylfleavirostko jumped from the lip of a 25 footer in my heat the year Bruce won cause he backed out of the set before that one, seeing friends @rcj6666, @n04hj, @bruceirons, @gerglong, @john_john_florence take home the prize, etc etc. The Eddie will always be the standard bearer for big wave events cause it’s the one event the world stops to watch everyone sending it for their friends who’ve passed on. So here’s to channeling their spirits and enjoying a few waves for all our lifelong heroes. 🙌🏽

Waves from my heat yesterday here at the #QuikProFrance2019. I haven’t competed here in 3 years and this year I do so thinking of our great friend and my former boss, @pierre_agnes, who was tragically lost at sea in a boating accident just outside the contest venue in big swell and dense fog early last year. Sorely missed but never forgotten. • • Thanks for all the messages yesterday. Felt nice to just surf and have fun. Board sticking to the feet and fun surf is a good combo.

Congrats to @italoferreira for winning the @isasurfing world games in Miyazaki a couple days ago. After losing his passport (and all his visas) and then showing up with 9 minutes left in his first round and borrowing @filipetoledo’s board, I had a little feeling it might be a special week for the guy. He’s a beast and so many people’s favorite surfer to watch. He’s also super good to his fans and everybody on tour. Congrats. Respect! 💪🏽

We get to do a lot of cool things and go great places around the world but this one is at the top of the bucket list. @letahaaislandresort is one of the nicest places I’ve ever been. If you want the classic Tahiti experience, this is the place to go. Thanks for having us for a few days after the Teahupoo event. Can’t say enough good things about everything we experienced with you guys. And special thanks to Laurent for throwing out the invite in the first place and to @air_tahiti For getting us there! See you again next Tahiti trip!

#HurricaneDorian is obviously not the first and won’t be the last devastating storm to affect many thousands of people and property, but being so close to home in a place I’ve had many fond memories throughout my life, we wanted to do something at @outerknown to show a little love to the Bahamas. So we put this shirt idea together to launch on the site to raise money and awareness and donate 100% of the profits to the #BahamianDisasterReliefFund. • • With 50+ people currently confirmed dead (with dozens or even hundreds potentially adding to that list) and 13,000+/- homes destroyed destroyed, the damage will take an untold amount of money and time to recover from. People’s lives are truly forever changed after enduring two days of category 5 hurricane winds with gusts in excess of 220mph. Whole neighborhoods and marinas completely wiped out. Stories of young children literally being blown from rooftops and not seen again or whole families found drown inside homes are hard to fathom. • • If you can find a good organization to donate money directly that would be amazing, but don’t forget that if you just have some old supplies of food, hygiene products, non-perishables or clothing, please find a way to get those to a collection station and en route to the Bahamas. Nothing better than the big, open walls of #JBay. Fun day today and hoping for some more solid waves this week. Spent the afternoon talking with the girls and crew with @surfersnotstreetchildren, #BrittMerrick, and lots of surf fans. I’ve also been shell hunting and meditating. All these things go together very cohesively at J-Bay. 🙂

Thank you, Saquarema/Brazil. Coming here I didn’t know what to expect but the fanfare and surf and hospitality has been next level from everyone. I wish there was another of me to have more time for everyone. Thanks to @r_arona for looking after me and my crew all week. Anyway, hope everyone is enjoying the event and although not the best result I really enjoyed the competition which is what it’s all about. Word up. 🤟🏽

Had an epic trip to Bali this year. Thank you Ibu and @komanekaresorts 🙏 for an awesome place to stay near Keramas with great food, fun waves, and warm hospitality. My breakfasts were on point and the massages, pool, and property as a whole was awesome. Also, a huge thanks for @rizaltandjung, @marlon.gerber, @varuntandjung, @bronson_meydi, @elihanneman and @bobhurley for some super fun freesurfs around the island. Missing the warm water and fun waves already. The travel never seems to end. Good and bad problem I guess...mostly good. :)

Thanks to everyone who came out to #AintThatSwell with the @theswellian and @vaughandeadly last night at the Torquay Bowls Club. @markocchilupo and @bradgerlach showed up and we had a swell time talking absolute trash about each other. But in all seriousness, it was a blast to dive into old times and celebrate #BellsBeach for the #RipCurlPro. Hope to see everyone down there this Easter at the event. And apologies as I’ve forgotten all of your handles everyone in the crowd gave me to tag today! Thanks for the group shot.

Quick surf yesterday morning. More board testing. So, there is no shortage of critics of all things pro surfing so before that starts for the year, what is it you’re looking forward to or love about the @wsl tour. I can’t wait to see the levels this year and get back into the flow of surfing heats and hopefully start smashing all these kids! 😅🏄🏾👊🏽 Oh, and I’m also working on a little documentary series of the year ahead. Working out which board(s) for which conditions and thruster vs quad. Can you tell which waves are on which fin setup? PS...last two waves are on a thruster.

I was fortunate enough to be invited to NZ this week for a member/guest tourney at #taraitigolfclub. What a beautiful part of the world and even more reason to find myself, like everyone, in shock the past two days over the tragedy in #Christchurch. My heart goes out to everyone affected by this horrible, despicable act. With all the beauty on this planet, how do people get so brainwashed and disheartened into thinking that is the answer for them? These people senselessly murdered posed no threat to this man. I hope the community bonds together to comfort each other through this awful event. 🙏🏽
