So hard to remember to honor and celebrate victories with so much chaos and blatant, harmful white supremacy running rampant and invading our safe spaces. But THIS IS A HUGE VICTORY for @reformlajails 👊🏽 This is people power! 🙌🏽 This has been a looooong road that @osopepatrisse and Peter and @justicelanow and others have been on for up to 10 years! This is a little highlight reel just from the rally last week to the hearings this week alone! Imagine the entire journey. Thank you to those on the LA County Board of Supervisors who voted to cancel this contract to build yet another multi BILLION dollar jail (the 8th in LA county!)!! Thank you most of all to the organizers! The people! The community! This is one step closer to ending mass incarceration and finding alternative community centered, care based options for mentally ill and homeless that make up the majority of those who are incarcerated. Now we have to vote for @reformLAjails in March y’all! ✊🏽✊🏽

We need to put an end to the violence and oppression carried out by our government. This is not your typical love letter. Not your “let’s come together and love each other talk” I promise. Comparing abusive relationships to the one we are in with the US government. Listen to the whole thing. Apologies I had to cut some of it to post it. TRIGGER WARNING: This is real. HOW DO WE BREAK THIS CYCLE. If it’s not voting, and we don’t want violence, we better get real creative and active and DISMANTLE AND BUILD the world we want to see strategically together. A world where the most targeted and vulnerable are liberated, celebrated and loved, thriving in equity and leadership. Y’all know I’m all for voting... it’s an important tool for many reasons but this concept above is hard to argue against. When it comes to people dying RIGHT NOW, relying on the lengthy process of voting seems... wrong. People need to be saved RIGHT NOW from law enforcement, ICE/Police, Mass incarceration/detention, from the dangerous hands of our government. People are dying. This has been happening to Black and Brown, Trans, Indigenous, Muslim adults, families and children, people at an unreal rate for too long - not just during this administration. Descendants of slaves, victims of Mass incarceration/modern day slavery, police, ICE raids, murder at the hands of law enforcement, state sanctioned lynchings, war on drugs, crime bill is all the SAME damn system! We need to step into our role and responsibility as liberators. I have my own ideas and work in what I believe that is and looks like, but I understand that may not be for you. Everyone’s role is different. I’m not interested in hearing what it ISN’T for you... but what IS that for you? How does that look? Do it. Get creative. Get active. Save lives. Liberate.

Continuing the fight for and thinking about Eric Garner, & his daughter, and activist Erica Garner today and the trauma placed on Gwen Carr & all of the Black & Brown families & communities abused, oppressed & murdered by the system that was designed to do just that but claims to be there to protect & bring justice. | This is separation of families. #Icantbreathe Same system that enforces the #MuslimBan the one we are demanding to #ClosetheCamps the same that targets trans people, sex workers, the homeless, refugees, migrants, the addicted, the mentally ill, & Black Brown & Indigenous children | Justice will not come from a system designed to do the opposite - to protect the most protected and target the most vulnerable. True Justice will come from God and the only justice we will see on this Earth will come from us, community, coalition building, fighting together ✊🏽

{SWIPE} We need to protect each other. Black, Brown, Muslim, Trans undocumented and people Indigenous to the Americas, adults, children and families are under attack. It’s up to us to protect each other. #ClosetheCamps #AbolishIce

So grateful to be on this panel with people who are using their platforms, privileges, business and art to lift up people in their own creative ways. Grateful for you @ledisi @wolfjames @sevetriwilson @jamilahlemieux @rashadny @bmike2c ✊🏽 A little excerpt below from when I was asked about stories I want to see told #repost from @colorofchange : “ “I want to see leaders in the current movement, and how it affects their mental health. Just to push the narrative in how we should be investing in our leaders that are moving the culture forward because a lot of the time they feel siloed and alone. It’s hard for your community when everyone is afraid to speak out about a certain issue, and you’re that one. There are so many people that don’t have a platform like I do, who are doing that work, who are murdered, have disappeared, or have mental breakdowns. Look at activists in Ferguson, look at activists in Louisiana. That is not unintentional. That is very, very intentional. To inject poor mental health into our communities, and to make sure that they set examples of leaders to say, ‘If you really want to stand up, that’s what’s going to happen to you.’ If we build community around that, and really build people power the way that we should, the way that we should be doing, then they can’t do that to everybody. I want to see those stories.” - @kendrick38 at our Arts, Culture, and Politics event at @studio_be_ #EssenceFest #TellBlackStories *** Coming Soon: Listen to all of the conversations on the #TellBlackStories podcast soon. Stream from wherever you get your podcasts. “ shout out to leaders in New Orleans that we need to protect and lift up like @sistersong_woc @wwavnola @vote_nola ✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽 Follow them. Get involved. Build community. Liberate.

This is from a session May 22 but it’s making its rounds again, and people are still oblivious so I figured I would post again. This is dangerous especially to those who are mostly targeted by our criminal “justice” system.
Kendrick Sampson
I wrote this whole caption and Instagram just... deleted it. So here it is again: New Orleans is my favorite culture in the US and one of my favorite in the world! The accent is my favorite here, unlike any even in Louisiana. Creole food from NOLA is my favorite type of food. Jazz music is my favorite music genre! The history of NOLA is a unique one of Resistance, Resilience and Revolution. It’s in the food, the people, the Art, the culture. Gene’s Po Boys is a staple. Yet it has succumb to gentrification like many place in the US. It will soon be condos. *****************************************************We need to be way more active and intentional in building community, spending money in our communities with people inside the community, pooling our money together and working to own our community to push out White Supremacy, corporate greed and hate. People over profit. We need to actively identify and lift up, support and protect our community leaders (elected, policy and grassroots) who are active in liberation and building equity and healing and protection. @sistersong_woc @wwavnola @votenola are examples of those in New Orleans. We are our solution. Let’s build y’all. ✊🏽

Before the debates started in Miami last night, someone came out and said “Hello Democrats!” And then cued the National Anthem. I have knelt for the National Anthem since Kaepernick first knelt. And in light of continued police killings and lack of accountability, in light of the fact that Francis Scott Key did not intend for his vision of the Star Spangled Banner to include ME or people who look like me who tend to, most often, be the victim or police brutality, in light of the concentration camps at the border and continued violence by law enforcement (ICE, police, sheriffs, border patrol etc) on Black and Brown men, women, children and trans people... I decided to kneel once again. I haven’t ever identified as a Democrat, I identify as a liberator and that’s the work I’m here to do - work for the liberation of those who need it the most. I am ashamed and pissed that the Democrats, Nancy Pelosi and those who just approved this oppressive regimes proposal for 6 billion to . Thank you @ocasio2018 @ilhanmn @ayannapressley @rashidatlaib @reprokhanna and others for voting no... as far as the 129 Dems that voted yes, damn shame. I have so much more to say but for now... I continue to kneel. I didn’t think anyone saw me but lo and behold... in my DMs this video slid through. You never know who’s watching. ( thank you @renydizle )

I truly think this film and the power that these men hold - the #exonerated5 - have the power to shift culture in the right direction. I had the privilege (thank you to @niecynash1) to attend the #FYC event for @whentheyseeus where @oprah interviewed @ava & the cast and the #exonerated5 @koreykingwise @santanaraymond @dr.yusefsalaam @kevrichardson77 and #AntronMcCray They all shared honest, powerful and valuable perspectives. The kids/young adults that play them... are future/current leaders. @jharreljerome is incredible on screen and in this interview. Niecy has already taken up an ambassador position for @innocenceproject ✊🏽 and delivers such an unforgettable, incredible performance. @vancityjax when asked by @oprah “What did you learn about the justice system?” he said “What did I learn about the justice system... WRONG NAME.” 🙌🏽🙌🏽 Damn right. Y’all, there’s so many ways to get involved in dismantling this system. Demanding more progressive DA’s. Demanding stronger use of force standards. Exposing our leaders who refuse to protect us because they are taking money from problematic police unions. Demand accountability and criminal liability to these cops who abuse their position. Accountability for prosecutors. Make sure people have access to adequate representation in court and thoroughly understand their rights and how it applies to their case. Better mental health treatment in our communities. More alternatives to incarceration (ie @reformlajails) Community led solutions. I can go on and on... There are so many things to do... we can get overwhelmed by the size and scale of it OR we can ALL dedicate ourselves to a piece of it. Let’s build together. ✊🏽

  • Kendrick Sampson

Actual footage of me avoiding anything or anyone that even looks like it MIGHT be additional stress right now 👀 “hzz$ogh$@{~*”🤬🏃🏾‍♂️💨
  • Kendrick Sampson

{SWIPE} We need to protect each other. Black, Brown, Muslim, Trans undocumented and people Indigenous to the Americas, adults, children and families are under attack. Many police departments, ICE and CBP and the prison industrial complex are working together to carry out this White Supremacist administrations work. The whole DAMN system is guilty as hell. It’s up to us to protect each other. #ClosetheCamps #AbolishIce
  • Kendrick Sampson

Y’all this was a special moment. (Big understatement) My favorite of Essence Fest. If @queenandslim is anything like the first 13 min that I was blessed to experience... we have culture shifting art on our hands. @msmelina @lenawaithe I am in awe of your gifts. Yall’s commitment to US 👊🏽 from costume design ( @shionat ) to photographers @noemiemarguerite @campbelladdy to the love and commitment to liberating dark skin. Y’all are 🔥🖤✊🏽 I can’t wait to see this on Thanksgiving DAY. Couldn’t be more appropriate. (Shoutout to @melodyehsani for a dope panel 🙌🏽) Without Art, there is no revolution.
  • Kendrick Sampson

Liberate.
  • Kendrick Sampson

This is from a session May 22 but it’s making its rounds again, and people are still oblivious so I figured I would post again. This is dangerous especially to those who are mostly targeted by our criminal “justice” system.
  • Kendrick Sampson

{SWIPE} Super inspired hearing the stories and celebrations of Black people who are making significant contributions to culture at the @theculturecreators awards brunch yesterday. Shout out to #Htown honoree @iamjamesflopez 🤘🏽✊🏽 (suit @eidos 🙏🏽🙌🏽)

So just to clarify... my belief: it’s definitely about the color of our skin. I don’t agree with the entire analysis but I appreciate the perspective and think we can learn from it.

I pledge to protect anyone I see being harassed and terrorized by ICE and to call out ICE if I see them. Today is JUNETEENTH an important day in American history - especially for Black people in my hometown of Houston. I donated a viewing of @emanuelmovie tonight in Houston and hope we can all can take time to see this film (today is last day in theatres I believe) to remember those who lost their lives and the community that lost loved ones and still has to recover from this act of hate. We should watch this from a perspective of healing and hold space for conversation around liberation and protection, reparations, coalition building and most importantly HEALING. #emanuel

{SWIPE} Yo! Thank you @hbo @zendaya @hunterschafer (the whole cast), @augustinefrizzell, Sam Levinson etc - @euphoria is a beautiful experience. Imperfect. Controversial. Uncomfortable. It does a great job of bringing us into this insensitive, dark world of teenage addiction and identity crises and social media and experiencing its nuances, allowing even some humor here and there while still conveying how inappropriate and unjust it may be.
