Flew solo for the first time today. 🚀 As I start the next chapter of my life after Instagram I asked myself what things I wanted to do. At the top of my list was learning to fly. The discovery of flight is one of man’s great achievements and I wanted to make sure to experience it first hand. It’s both academically challenging and viscerally rewarding to be able to take off alone for the first time. Only by being curious and trying new things do we grow and today was no different. Thanks to Roy and Tara, my instructors who helped me prepare for this moment.

@mikeyk and I are pleased to announce that Adam Mosseri, our current Vice President of Product, will become the Head of Instagram starting today. We are thrilled to hand over the reins to a product leader with a strong design background and a focus on craft and simplicity — as well as a deep understanding of the importance of community. These are the values and principles that have been essential to us at Instagram since the day we started, and we're excited for Adam to carry them forward. Adam began his career as a designer, managed his own design consultancy, and then joined the Facebook design team in 2008. Since he joined, he moved from design into product management, and spent time working on Mobile then News Feed and most recently, we recruited him to Instagram. In his role leading Instagram, Adam will oversee all functions of the business and will recruit a new executive team including a head of engineering, head of product and head of operations. Since we announced our departure, many people have asked us what we hope for the future of Instagram. To us, the most important thing is keeping our community — all of you — front and center in all that Instagram does. We believe that Adam will hold true to these values and that Instagram will continue to thrive. We remain excited for the future of Instagram and Facebook in the coming years as we transition from being leaders at Instagram to being just two users in a billion. We're confident that under Adam's leadership, Instagram will evolve and improve and we look forward to the future of the product and community.

@mikeyk and I are grateful for the last eight years at Instagram and six years with the Facebook team. We’ve grown from 13 people on the team to over a thousand with offices around the world, all while building products used and loved by a community of over one billion. We’ve loved learning to scale a company and nurture an enormous global community. And we couldn’t have done it without our amazing Instagram team, and the support of @zuck, @sherylsandberg, @schrep, and @chriscox at Facebook - we’ve learned so much from all of you. Now, we’re ready for our next chapter. We’re planning on taking some time off to explore our curiosity and creativity again. Building new things requires that we step back, understand what inspires us and match that with what the world needs; that’s what we plan to do. We remain excited for the future of Instagram and Facebook in the coming years as we transition from leaders to just two users in a billion. Thank you for being part of Instagram’s community. It’s been (and will continue to be) an honor 🙌🏻

@reidhoffman just released a new episode of Masters of Scale; a podcast that explores what it takes to build companies through the experiences of entrepreneurs. I had a blast taping this episode and sharing my thoughts on how to keep things simple as you grow. Have a listen and leave your thoughts in the comments! (Link in bio)

Today we announced two exciting things: (1) we just crossed 1 billion monthly actives on Instagram and (2) the launch of IGTV, our latest product. IGTV is video, re-imagined for mobile; long-form vertical video from the creators you love. While all these creators are on Instagram, they’ve yet to be able to share longer videos with their fans on IG. Today that changes with IGTV. We’re excited to make this available to all one billion of you!

In the spirit of sharing my favorite places, I want to tell you about @uchu.nyc. If you’ve followed me for a while you’ll know I love traveling to Japan and exploring their cocktail culture. I have never experienced anything close to that quality until I visited Uchu. As an 8-seat bar, reservations are required but well worth it. Frank, the bartender, masterfully composes every cocktail by hand. Here he’s placing individual elderflower buds on hand carved ice for a whiskey cocktail. If you’re in NY make sure to visit ✌🏻

This week we officially opened our brand new New York Instagram office. It was awesome to see the team (they were just 3 people 3 years ago!). Between music, pizza and a team photo I got to meet the great people that make Instagram possible on the East Coast. Congrats on the new office team!

When I met chef @davidnayfeld a couple years ago he had recently moved to SF with a dream of opening a restaurant. Now, @chefico has a line out the door waiting to sample some of the pizzas and pastas he makes from scratch every day. I’m particularly excited about people who dedicate themselves to craft. Each day he rolls out a new sheet of pasta for the night’s orders. Being good at what you do takes endless repetition and hard work. Many would have quit along the way but David and his team charge on one sheet of pasta at a time. Here’s to David and team for putting craft ahead of all else and producing one of the best restaurants I’ve been to in a long time.

Ray Dalio’s @principles is my favorite current read. Half business and half life advice, Ray captures a series of pragmatic rules for living and working effectively. My favorite bit of advice is to learn from every mistake and capture that learning in writing. I hope you enjoy the book as much as I have. #bookstagram #bookworm

If you’ve been following me for a while you’ve no doubt seen my love for food and wine. As part of a new series I’m going to try to share my favorite tips for both of these. Tip number one is about wine; I always find it useful to have an app to look up the description/tasting notes of wine before I buy them. I’ve been using @vinousmedia for this. If I’m out at a restaurant I can quickly search and see if a wine’s any good. What are your favorite wine tips? #nationalwineday

My friend @reidhoffman introduced me to Liberty United; they transform illegal guns and bullets provided by police departments and turn them into jewelry. 20-25% of the profits go to educating and protecting at-risk children from gun violence. I appreciate Reid handing this to me, and I’m hoping you’ll have a look. You can follow them here: @libertyutd

After 5,000ft of climbing up from the ocean @kingthenate and I reached the top of Kaloko Road. It may be the steepest single climb I’ve ever done. At the very top someone wrote “warrior” at the peak. It was a great ride but not one that I’m going to be doing anytime again soon 🤣 📷 by Nate

May is National Bike Month! I first discovered cycling back in 2016 when an injury kept me from running. I had no idea it’d turn into the passion I have today. From Tokyo to Death Valley, my bike has provided me with so many adventures. To celebrate, here’s a #thingsorganizedneatly of some of my cycling gear.

Today, Instagram announced a bunch of new products! We’re launching new integrations with other apps, like Spotify and GoPro, a new Camera Effects Platform so partners can make creative tools for their followers in Stories, a video chat feature in Direct, a new Explore experience, and a bullying comment filter to keep Instagram a safe and positive experience for all. Congrats to the team for finalizing work on these new experiences that will help bring our community even closer to the people and things they love. And a big thanks to @ssarkar1, @tamar.shapiro, and @jsood for announcing all of these onstage this morning!

I believe in the power of routine to start your day and drive productivity. Every morning I get up, say hi to Freya and @nicole, exercise for an hour and then the essential part for any new parent: coffee! Ever since I was a barista in college I’ve loved the morning ritual of making an espresso. It’s simple, rewarding and literally energizing!

Now that I’ve passed the first level of Master Sommelier training, I’m going down the wine rabbit hole and studying for the next. @winefolly by Madeline Puckette and Justin Hammack is turning out to be an excellent study guide. It’s a comprehensive and visually-oriented introduction to different grapes, tastes, and regions. Now to master the skill of committing tastes to memory with practice this weekend! #bookstagram
Kevin Systrom
One of the things I’ve had on my bucket list was to pass the first level of the Master Sommelier training (the introductory course). After many months of flash cards, practicing deductive tasting and the intro course I passed the test. The next level is the “certified” test which is much harder and requires you to blind taste wines, name what they are and pass a service test. I’m starting to study now so wish me luck!

I’m proud to join @mikeyk and 500+ other founders and CEOs to stand for change in our industry: “I believe in a more diverse and inclusive tech industry. I am dedicated to having a diverse team and board, and when I have a choice of investment partners in the future, the diversity of their firms will be an important consideration.” #foundersforchange

@nicole and I are reading more books together and this is our current read. As new parents, we’re reading up on child psychology, scientifically informed approaches, and academic studies detailing best practices for raising kids. I’ve always been interested in the nature versus nurture debate. This book provides an interesting angle on nurture, hypothesizing that it extends beyond our immediate family and environment, theorizing that our peers and early social groups greatly affect our development as well. While parenting is much more complex than any single book can cover, this is a fun first step for us to learn about Freya’s development. What books would you guys recommend for new parents? #bookstagram

Being home with a newborn means Mom and Dad have some time on their hands (let’s be honest, not much time). In between feedings and changes we get to organize the vast amount of baby stuff required for Freya. These are just a few things required for Freya’s first couple of months!

I hope everyone has enjoyed a restful holiday season. One of my favorite holiday traditions is cooking with @nicole. This year, we added to that tradition and created a #thingsorganizedneatly with some of our baking supplies, ingredients, and a few of our most tasty cookie creations! I hope you all have a warm and wonderful holiday season, enjoying your favorite traditions, and creating new ones, too.

This week, everyone at Instagram came together for our semi-annual All Hands meeting to celebrate everything we’ve accomplished in 2017 and prepare for 2018. We’ve made a lot of progress this last year, helping our community strengthen relationships with the people and passions they care most about with products like live broadcasting, shopping, face filters, a polling sticker, live co-broadcasting, and our initiatives to enhance kindness on and off the platform. I’m so proud of the team for their hard work, and I’m excited to find new, innovative ways to bring people together in 2018.

Now you can follow hashtags on Instagram! Following a hashtag is just like following a friend. To get started, search for a topic you’re interested in or tap on a hashtag from any post. When you find a hashtag you like, open the hashtag page and tap the follow button. You’ll begin seeing top posts from that hashtag in your feed and the latest stories in your stories bar. One of my favorite hashtags is #bookstagram. I’ve recently started posting about what I’m reading to connect with other book lovers. I just finished The Signal and the Noise by Nate Silver, an investigation into our ability to predict future events. I’m excited to learn what other people are reading by following #bookstagram.

I’ve been lucky to be able to travel to beautiful places around the world on my bike. Last year I rode around Utah and the Grand Staircase National monument. We’re so lucky to have these places and if we don’t protect them it’s possible we won’t be able to share them with our children. Last week this administration ordered a reduction of the size of this monument by 50% - an unprecedented move for such a fragile place. Let’s not take for granted the things we as a country have fought so hard to earn and protect. The environment is something @nicole and I care about deeply. I hope, as a nation, we can find a way to preserve and protect our country’s beauty for generations to come.

At Instagram, it’s our mission to help people strengthen relationships with the people and passions they care about. One of the ways we accomplish this is by building products that help people share their moments and express themselves. Today we’re introducing two new tools that let you hold on to your favorite moments from Instagram Stories and share them in new ways. With Stories Highlights, now you can group the stories you’ve shared into highlights and feature them on your profile, where they will stay up as long as you want. And to help you build highlights, your stories will now automatically save into a private Stories Archive so you can easily relive them whenever you want. I’m so excited to see how people use these new tools. Photo by @yelldesign

Tonight at the #BreakthroughAwards I had the honor of presenting Joanne Chory with an award. Her work exploring plant hormones’ roles in growth and development may help scientists understand how growth processes are regulated in other organisms as well. Congrats Joanne and to all the other honorees as well!

Yesterday, the Instagram leadership team spent time together in Detroit, Michigan. While here we’re learning from local business leaders with similar values. Detroit is at the center of many of the economic and social issues facing the US right now. Spending some time here gives us a perspective to build a better IG for the entire world. Last night was all about connecting with each other, and one of my favorite ways to connect is over a great meal. I’m so thankful for my teammates and the time we get to spend together learning from others in new places.

Today is #GivingTuesday, a day to help others by giving your time, donations, or your voice to the causes that matter to you most. This year, @nicole and I are donating to the San Francisco SPCA, because of the joy that @dolly brings to our lives every day. The SF SPCA is committed to fighting for the welfare of animals in San Francisco and beyond. They are one of the oldest humane societies in the United States, and the founders of the no-kill movement. As a result of their efforts, San Francisco has the lowest euthanasia rate of any major city in the United States. If you want to learn more about their mission, you can click the link in my bio. I’m proud to support the work they’re doing, and so is this happy pup. #SFSPCA

This Thanksgiving I’ll be up in Lake Tahoe with my family. It’s one of my favorite holidays because it’s a moment to step back and be thankful. This year I’m especially thankful for Nicole and our baby girl who will join us in January. As for packing I’ve made it a bit more entertaining by trying my first #thingsorganizedneatly 👌🏻 No matter where you are or how you’re celebrating: Happy Thanksgiving!!!

At Instagram, it’s our mission to help people strengthen relationships with the people and passions they care about most. We do this through our products like the co-broadcast feature in live, and through meaningful programs like #kindcomments. Making our mission a reality drives my work at Instagram every day and so does having strong relationships with our incredible team. I love the regular dinners with my team to share what’s happening in our lives. Tonight’s dinner is bittersweet, because it’s the last dinner with my assistant, Kylie Riggins. Over the last two years, Kylie’s made a huge impact with her ‘no job is too small’ attitude and her drive to keep things moving forward. While I am excited to see what she’ll accomplish in her next chapter, on Instagram’s Creation & Communication team, I’ll miss the warmth and humor that she brought to my office. Thank you for all your hard work, Kylie. You will be missed!

Happy two years @nicole! 😍 I can’t wait for our little girl to arrive so she can meet her beautiful, intelligent and loving mom 😘

Last week I rode nearly 800km around Japan. I left the pristine streets of Tokyo, through the dense forests around Shirakawa Mura, to the cultural center of Kyoto. The route was demanding but the views and experiences made it worthwhile. As tired as I was at the end of each day, I stayed up sampling local food, learning more about the villages we were staying in, and connecting with other passionate cyclists. I reached out to @tokyocyclist on IG and he was nice enough to show me around! While I am happy to be back at home with @nicole and @dolly, I am grateful for the experience and friendships built along the way.

In this month's @wired, there's a great read about what we’re doing at Instagram to keep our community safe and positive, including applying AI to filter negative comments. While building these tools can be technical, the goal is simple – cultivating kindness. Creating a kind community is important because it ensures people are free to express themselves, share authentically and connect with others. The article features interviews with me, and kindness ambassadors Nicky Jackson Colaco and James Mitchell, pictured here, who are leading the charge to make Instagram the kindest community possible.

The silhouette of a monster - @Canyon Aeroad 9.0 disc. Took it out for a spin today and had a blast. Never been on an aero bike before and I'm surprised by how different it feels (fast!). I'm also excited for the disc brakes which will come in handy in SF #fogust summer 😂

@Dolly wishes everyone a happy Halloween! 🎃 This year she asked to be a Lion but we really think she was angling for a bunch of new toys 😝

Last week I sat down with @mrporterlive to discuss Instagram’s focus on craft, design and kindness. The article is up now as part of The Journal on mrporter.com - as part of the article we did a fun photo shoot here in the office so I’m sharing a couple of the best shots 🙌🏻

This morning, I attended Vogue’s Forces of Fashion conference, where I joined @marcjacobs and Vogue’s Sally Singer on stage to talk all things fashion and Instagram. Afterwards, I was able to meet a bunch of young fashion enthusiasts to learn how they use Instagram to find inspiration. Scroll through to see more!

Today I rode 100mi in rural Japan through forests and in canyons along rivers. About half way in we turned a corner and saw this! Japan may be one of the most beautiful places on earth—especially when it's pouring rain 🇯🇵

My favorite thing about working at Instagram is the team I get to work with. Tonight, @nicole and I hosted the people who help run Instagram. They're a supremely talented and fun bunch that make the app we all love work! Thanks to them and the rest of the team for all they do to make IG great!
