This is the California/Mexico border as seen from the Tijuana side. I went with a group led by @thisisabouthumanity earlier this week to try to better understand the impact of what our recent change in asylum laws is having on families trying to escape persecution. I learned a lot starting with this wall. There is in fact a wall already in existence on much of the border between Mexico and the US. The door with the heart is called the Door of Hope where once a year families could cross over to see one another. That practice has been stopped. The upside down flag is a symbol for those who served in the US armed forces and then were deported. We visited shelters by the border for those in transit, some of which you’ll see here, a school bus transformed into a school for migrant children by @yeswecanwf, and we brought shoes to some of the children there. I came away with more questions than answers. Except one thing: we need to and can take care of each other, and must look beyond ourselves to do so. I’ll give you a few of the organizations we learned about so you can check them out and help or donate as you see fit. @undp has done a new study providing really useful info on poverty around the world. Good news is poverty rates are down, bad news is inequality is up & contributes to poverty, and those who suffer most are children.

Holly and her team have inspected more than 30 detention centers over the last few years, saving countless kids. Last month, their legal team found a premature infant so ill she would have died without immediate treatment. Their lawyers and doctors fought federal authorities to transport the baby to the hospital. And saved her life. Same with 3 more gravely ill toddlers. The team is finding kids held in solitary confinement, kids forcibly sedated with drugs, use of pepper spray against kids . . . the atrocities go on and on. . As an attorney of record in the crucial FLORES settlement, Holly’s team is one of only a handful of legal teams in the world with the right to access CBP facilities, demand inspections, obtain full medical files of the kids, and procure the census of every child detained. This makes them absolutely vital to investigating, communicating and advocating in the nationwide movement to protect the children and end the abuse. Holly’s team has brought 3 class actions with national impact. Her funding is gone to see these suits to completion and we must ensure this vital work continues. . We will BOTH continue to rehabilitate and reunify these babies. AND we will defend them to end this cycle of horror. $240,000 will get Holly’s team what they need to continue this AND/BOTH work for 2 years: get to the sites for inspections, interview kids, remove them to protect their health & safety, and build legal cases to ensure that these government atrocities end. . African Children’s Choir! What a beautiful night we had in NYC with these kids who always bring light and joy and magic wherever they go. Today is a sad anniversary. It was one year ago today that we woke up to news and images of children being forcibly taken from their families at our border. And now a year later many of them are still not reunited. That means a full year in a child’s life without a parent in conditions that have mostly not been disclosed to us. A year of trauma and struggle and injustice weighed upon families who thought they were escaping just that. Let us today commit ourselves even more deeply to fighting this inhumane and un-American practice. I have always advocated for immigrants because our country has always advocated for immigrants. Earlier this year I went to the InStyle Awards wearing a very short dress. I was a little nervous about it, wondering if people might just point fingers saying “really sweetie, at your age?” Here’s what happened instead. @LauraBrown99, the Editor in Chief of @InStylemagazine hoisted me onto her lap (this is a thing she does) and said “I’m going to put you in our beauty issue for your LEGS!” I had my doubts as so often things said at parties on laps are not what you want to hang your hat on am I right? But here I am, legs and all, in the May issue! This by the way, is really the story of what a progressive anomaly Laura is in the world of fashion. She is a breath of fresh air, fun as they come stalwart truth teller. To me she is the antithesis of everything that used to intimidate me about the fashion world. Thank you Laura for being the effortless inspiration that you are. And thank you @instylemagazine for all the fun! This picture pretty much sums up the joy I had working on #SMILF. My last episode on the show airs tonight. The only thing more fun than playing Ally is playing Ally as a gunslinger from the old west! I loved the insight and storytelling and of course humor of @sho_smilf and am going to miss it very much. This is my friend @kirstengillibrand. She’s running for President. My friend Kirsten Gillibrand is running for President! I gotta say, as exciting and extraordinary as it is to have a friend run for President (I mean when does that happen?), I find myself even more ecstatic for the country. That a woman of this caliber, this fortitude, this integrity, and this intelligence might have a shot at becoming our leader. That is a thrill. How lucky we would be. How lucky I have been to know her since our college days (yup this picture was taken while we were studying in China many moons ago). It was a beautiful day to march yesterday in LA and I was thrilled to again participate in this powerful peaceful gathering. I was honored to introduce @jennifersiebelnewsom, a woman I’ve admired since I made one of my fave videos ever - my feminist hair! - for the @therepproject. But as we were all so aware yesterday, the beauty and power of the march is not ever about any one leader or speaker, but that so so many diverse people from every walk of life can stand shoulder to shoulder and, in the midst of different beliefs and experiences, come together as one, united, emboldened and empowered by the singular belief that women and men, and all human beings, are entitled to equal and equitable treatment and dignity. The power of that truth flowing and soaring through these marches is what changes our world for the better, even and especially in the midst of difference and struggle. Well, as is typical for me, it’s Jan 3 and I’m just getting around to posting: HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY! But I didn’t want to miss my opportunity as we say goodbye together to 2018. It’s been a year of deep challenge and unity. There has been suffering. There has been joy. There has been cataclysmic coming together and reintroduction to the power of the voice. We have been given a deeper opportunity to know ourselves and also to choose who we want to be. All to be continued in 2019. Thank you 2018 for your insights, heartbreaks, electric shocks and revelations. In 2018 I learned not to be afraid, well, or to at least be brave in the face of it. So I’ll carry that resolution into 2019. It’s not a new idea. Just now experiencing it in a way I never did before. Also love. To live in love. Because there’s not much I know except that love wins.
