Weekend essential: backpack. This is my beast from @loyalstricklin. I take it everywhere. I love it as if it were my own son. 😂

In months and years gone by, I would try to make sense of everything around me, why people acted the way they did, why situations unfolded the way that they would, how I could have influenced them, what I could have changed or done differently. In recent times, I’ve become much more willing to let things happen and to handle them as they transpire. There’s no real point in trying to make sense of that which can’t be made sense of. People are going to be irrational. People will disappoint you. Situations will spiral out of your hands. None of it will make sense to you in the moment. There are forces outwith your control, no matter how much ownership you take. You have to be prepared for that, there’s a stillness in allowing things to unfold and being pragmatic about how you handle those situations. There’s no point trying to better say what has already been artfully said, so here’s a little quote from Marcus Aurelius, he was the man. He still is. “Never let the future disturb you. You will meet it, if you have to, with the same weapons of reason which today arm you against the present.”

1, 2 or 3? I say 3. Fun fact: I don’t enjoy getting my photo taken. I love styling & I love curating photographs. I just don’t love being in front of a camera all that much. I’ve become used to it over the years, it’s a really interesting thing to do, especially as often as I do. On the other hand, there’s something really beneficial about working in a field that makes you feel uncomfortable, that’s where we all learn the most. On the outside, we may believe that photographs can say a lot about someone else’s character, or how they demonstrate their lives to others. I’ve found that more often than not, people are far more complex and nuanced than we seem to assume. There’s a depth & a voice that photographs will never be able to capture, when we meet people for the first time outside of social media it becomes very apparent. I’ve found it more useful to assume nothing and find out what’s beneath those images, for myself. I think we could all benefit from asking more questions and making less assumptions.

I finally moved into my new apartment! I’ve been dreaming about moving into this building since I moved to New York. It feels nice to be able to set a target of moving into the space I really wanted, and get it done this quickly. Recently I’ve had a bunch of people asking me how I got out here, what I do for “work” and what my plans are for the next 5 years. I’m not gonna go through the entire thing here, but I’ll start off with some basic random snips of info about myself and then answer some questions on my stories through the week. I’m 29 (wow, I’m getting old). I am from a little village in Scotland called Newmilns. I moved away from there when I was 21. I was the first member of my family to visit America. I drink my coffee black, no exceptions. I almost joined the police before I got scouted by a model agency in London, in 2013. I’m a huge introvert. I prefer to walk everywhere. I lived in London for a little while, it never really felt like home. My favourite movie is Fight Club. The first time I stayed in New York I hated it. My childhood hero was Bruce Lee. My dream is to build a home in West Texas. I love taking photographs. I don’t like parties or large crowds. I only wear boots because sneakers make me look silly. I spend most of my time learning about new things. I love the desert. I watch a lot of sport. MMA & soccer mostly. I used to do karate. I was pretty good. I eventually want to make films. I’m taking my time with that.

Lengthy caption alert! I ran into @isaaclikes_ yesterday in Manhattan and we ended up talking about a bunch of things. Being sober while working around fashion party culture, navigating the confusion of our twenties and (soon for me) thirties, taking responsibility for our own careers, reflecting on how far we’ve come, wondering what we are even searching for. It got me thinking. I remember growing up & dreaming about heading across the pond to the USA. Never in a million years did I imagine I’d end up living in NY, working toward making movies & taking pictures. I mean, my family couldn’t afford a car, never mind a trip across the Atlantic. It took me 5 years to build a portfolio of work that met the criteria to get a visa for the United States. I didn’t really have a plan B. I never went to university, I don’t have a degree, I came into the creative industry completely fresh, I had to figure it out, I’m figuring it out everyday. I tend to forget that on the outside, nobody really knows how I got started in all this, my career started 6 years ago, most of the people that were around then, aren’t around now. Seasons change. Maybe it’s time I started telling little stories, sharing some more about what I’m doing, how I got here & where I’m going next. Despite being quite visible online, I feel like nobody really knows me at all.

In 2017 I decided to stop wearing black. Experimenting with patterns and colours has been a real blast over the last couple of years. I realised that I didn’t even know how to build an outfit, or a simple wardrobe with looks that didn’t revolve around black jeans. How boring is that? Hahaha. I honestly recommend trying it out for a month. Maybe you’ll end up giving away all your black clothes like I did. Hahahah. 😂🤷🏻‍♂️

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been wearing my suit that I made with @josephabboud. I designed it to be versatile enough to style in different environments and merge with some of the classic pieces I rely on. Colour palette and material is so important when you’re building a wardrobe, and using some family heirlooms to build around is a good place to start. My grandad was a stylish dude, he also loved gold. Haha. I borrowed some of his old pieces to add the finishing touches to some of these looks. They’re timeless.
