This picture is of Sennosuke Kataoka, a young Kabuki star in Japan. His career began at birth, as his family have been Kabuki actors for the past 15 generations. One of his missions is to make Kabuki more popular for a younger audience. Although Kabuki has existed for over 400 years, it is struggling to stay relevant in our digital age. Japan has been a very important place for my work in the last couple of years. The mix of tradition and the new is so strong in their culture, that it allows me to move between the two in a very free way. Out of this work has come my new exhibition EAST, which opens November 19 at @HamiltonsGallery in London. This week, I am going to post some of the work that I have made over the years in Japan. The time I went blond. To mark my 50th birthday I dyed my hair bleach blond. I felt I had to do something drastic, and it was a real change. People say blondes have more fun, and maybe there is some truth to it! This picture is during my second Versace campaign with Madonna in 2004, who is also very blonde here. When doing a group picture I always look at what the models give me. Their style, attitude, height, shapes, looks. With this group I liked the similarities in height and coloring, so I wanted to do a line up. I tend to direct everything. Often waiting to see what people do and then adjust, or sometimes straight from the beginning. We did this picture in Río de Janeiro, which has always been a very sensual place. I feel that South American people have this in their DNA, and I try to use it in my pictures too, especially when I am there. I remember going to Rio when I was young and admiring the open and beautiful people on the beach. It was very different where I came from so the feeling was strong. I love trying to recreate the feeling I had that day with my images. - Cuando hago una foto grupal, miro primero lo que me dan los modelos. Su estilo, actitud, altura, apariencia. Con este grupo me gustaron las similitudes en altura y color, así que los puse en una línea. Tiendo a dirigir todo. In my search of traditional cultures I wanted to visit some key places that are full of traditions, like India. When I started this project I decided to call it A Beautiful World because I discovered beauty where I had not really looked before, and I found so much of it. These three amazing men are from the Khiamniungan community in Nagaland, on the border between India and Myanmar. Like the Khiamniungan people, many traditional cultures are struggling to survive the overpowering forces of our globalised world. Being different has always excited me, but through the project I learnt that these cultures not only represent the beauty of diversity, but they also hold the knowledge for the survival and well being of us and our environment. - En mi búsqueda de comunidades tradicionales, quise visitar lugares clave, llenos de culturas, como la India. Cuando comencé este proyecto, decidí llamarlo 'A Beautiful World' porque encontré mucha belleza donde antes no había mirado. TOWEL SERIES 153, KIM KARDASHIAN WEST. - I always wanted to do a Towel Series with Kim, but it wasn't until she asked me to do a portrait of her and her family that I had the chance. When I arrived at their house, she was wearing a bathrobe and nothing else, but I thought it just looked so perfect. I had to capture it. I asked her if I could photograph only her first, wearing this robe. She has such an amazing power in her body that people sometimes forget that she is also so kind and gentle. - Siempre quise fotografiar a Kim para ‘Towel series’, y tuve la oportunidad de hacerlo cuando me pidió que hiciera un retrato suyo y de su familia. Still life is so interesting because it is so different from every other style. It can have so much energy without any activity. The way painters mix flowers, objects, colors, sizes. The way light is used to create depth and composition. It has greatly influenced the way I use colors and compose images. I started doing these flower still lifes in different countries to explore how each country has their own look on flowers. This shoot was in London, with @florastarkey . We decided to try something different, and capture flowers at different stages of life, not just in full bloom. Tulips can age in such a beautiful way, that I thought it would be amazing to document this journey. More and more, I get excited by the passage of life, and not just by the freshness of it. Age can be a beautiful thing. - La naturaleza muerta es muy interesante porque es diferente de cualquier otro estilo. Puede contener tanta energía sin mostrar ninguna actividad. La forma en que los pintores mezclan flores, objetos, colores, tamaños; la manera en que se utiliza la luz para crear profundidad y composición han influido mucho en mi manera de mezclar colores y componer imágenes. The group paintings of classical Spanish or Flemish painters have always intrigued me. I try to figure out how they are composed, or how light moves through the image, stronger in one part and softer and darker in others. In my work, I like to find symmetry, but symmetry can be more than just the balance of subjects on both sides. You can also achieve it by creating movement that travels from one side to the other, just like in the classical paintings. I did this picture for @VogueSpain with the Editor-in-Chief Yolanda Sacristan, paying homage to the Spanish Tomatina festival. I wanted to recreate the festival feeling, with the girls in red as if they had been hit by too many tomatoes. We had to make sure that absolutely no tomatoes touched the dresses. Very difficult! We had to do it all in one single shot. The guys moving around, covered in tomatoes, and the girls standing perfectly still but keeping this amazing energy. You can see the image as part of the permanent collection @MuseoMATE. - Las pinturas grupales de pintores clásicos españoles o flamencos siempre me han intrigado. Trato de averiguar cómo están compuestas, o cómo la luz se mueve a través de la imagen, más fuerte en una parte, más suave y más oscura en otras. En mi trabajo, me gusta encontrar simetría, pero la simetría puede ser más que solo el equilibrio de sujetos en ambos lados. También puede lograrse creando un movimiento que viaje de un lado a otro, al igual que en las pinturas clásicas. Hice esta foto para Vogue España con Editor-in-Chief Yolanda Sacristán, rindiendo homenaje a la Tomatina, festividad española. Quería recrear la sensación del festival, con las chicas vestidas de rojo como si les hubieran tirado demasiados tomates. Teníamos que asegurarnos de que ningún tomate tocara los vestidos. ¡Fue muy dificil! Tuvimos que hacerlo todo de una sola vez. Los muchachos en plena lucha, cubiertos de tomates, y las chicas sin moverse, perfectamente quietas pero transmitiendo esa energía increíble. I started doing the Alta Moda series ten years ago. I started in the high Andean region of Cuzco so I decided to call it Alta Moda because of the play on words. Alta Moda is Spanish for high fashion and I believe these dresses represented high fashion for Peru, and the altitude justified the name as well. Documenting all the traditional costumes of Peru became my passion and responsibility, not just as a photographer but as a Peruvian. I feel that Peru has such beautiful variety and traditional customes that are not always celebrated enough, so I wanted to help with that. - Empecé la serie Alta Moda hace diez años. Decidí llamarla así como un juego de palabras, porque comencé con los trajes de la región alto-andina de Cusco y porque creo que estos vestidos representan la ‘alta moda’ de Perú. When I opened @MuseoMATE in Lima, I wanted visitors to experience Peruvian artists from the moment they arrived at the museum. I decided to ask different artists to create the MATE letters every six months, and it became our most photographed section in the museum. It is great how a logo sometimes needs to be the same, as repetition is recognition, but other times the element of surprise can also make a logo endlessly exciting and alluring. I am happy to see how varied the artists’ interpretations have been so far, and hope there are many more to come! - Cuando abrí el Museo MATE en Lima, quería que los visitantes experimentaran a los artistas peruanos del momento en que llegaban al museo. Celebrating @carineroitfeld's birthday. I spent ten years of my life working with her almost everyday, appreciating her curious and surprising mind. Her take on fashion was different from the very beginning. She wouldn't just jump in and start changing the outfits of a model like other stylists would do, but would stand back, really look and then direct from her perspective. The way someone was dressed had more to do with what she was thinking, rather than just garments thrown on a body. The mind was very important. I learned a whole new way of working, and of tapping into myself rather than looking at how others worked. - Hoy celebramos el cumpleaños de @carineroitfeld. Today we remember our dear friend Oribe Canales. He was one of the most important hairdressers in the fashion business. I met Oribe in the early 80’s in NY when I was just starting out. He introduced me to the store Parachute, which landed me my first advertising job in America. Later, I booked him for a small job for American Vogue, for the stories at the front of the magazine. My editor was Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele, who totally loved him and started booking him for everything. Sadly that meant I lost my hairdresser, but I was happy he went his own way, and became a huge star. Luckily we went back to work together in the later years. He was a genius in his fearless vision. He looked at someone and just knew how to bring out the best in them, like you see in this @vanityfair picture. Every girl looks amazing in their own way. He loved women and life. Glamour and style. It is so sad to have lost him. I miss him a lot. - Hoy recordamos a nuestro querido Oribe Canales. Oribe fue uno de los peluqueros más geniales en el negocio de la moda. Lo conocí a principios de los 80 en Nueva York cuando recién comenzaba. ¡Me presentó a la tienda Parachute, mi primer trabajo publicitario en Estados Unidos! Más tarde, lo llamé para un pequeño trabajo para American Vogue, para las historias que van al inicio de la revista. Mi editora era Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele; lo amó totalmente y comenzó a llamarlo para todo.
