In our new October issue, @marthastewart48 shows us how to replicate her favorite faux-bois effect in our homes. "I first became enamored with faux bois (French for "false wood") when I purchased Skylands, my home in Maine. The house sits high atop a knoll known as Ox Hill, and is surrounded by tall trees. When we look out the large leaded windows, it feels like we're actually living in the forest, among evergreens. To play up this effect while adding an element of natural beauty to my traditional furnishings, I decided to decorate with faux-bois pieces—that is, items that resemble tree trunks, branches, or bark—made from a variety of materials." "Beet dyes make the most brilliant pink," textile artist Kiva Motnyk (@thompsonstreetstudio) says. In our September issue, Motnyk walks us through the natural dyeing process of infusing fabrics with rich colors taken from organic materials - everything ranging from avocado pits and onion skins to even pine needles. One of her top tips before getting started? Use natural fibers like cotton, linen, wool, silk, and hemp to get the best results. Her latest creations are often imperfect, sometimes featuring an occasional rip or tear (one of her latest, a jagged tear due to a swipe from her cat.) “I’ll probably patch over it, and that will create a whole new dimension. I always prefer prices that have a story,” she says with a shrug and a smile. This Minnesota home renovation featured charming touches that felt fresh yet comfortable. One of designer @briahammelinteriors’ goals was to brighten up the space, starting with the kitchen. Dark countertops were replaced with @cambriasurfaces quartz and she replaced the stone backsplash with a creamy, cement plaid tile. "We love the traditional, timeless feel this kitchen has and how warm and inviting it is—something a kitchen should always be!" says Hammel. "Surrounding the island are eight, custom barstools in a beautiful, blue plaid that became our clients favorite pieces in the entire home.” The open-air feel allowed the homeowners to serve up cocktails or prep food while still being able to converse with their family and friends. In our September issue, NYC-based textile artist Kiva Motnyk of @thompsonstreetstudio shows us the magic of natural dyeing, where organic materials take on a new life from blossoming botanicals to pools of rich color that soak earthy fabric canvases with stunning hues. Deep within The Arboretum, you'll find a hidden garden filled with giant cacti, enormous agaves, and yuccas with shaggy thatch skirts that catch your eye from a distance. Once you enter, the curiosities are hard to keep up with. 🌵 Designed by landscape architect Rudolph Ulrich in the 1880s, his surreal scape was one of several so-called "Arizona Gardens" which blended a formal style (quadrilateral beds and symmetrical plantings) with never-before-seen arid otherworldly beauties. To wear or not to wear, that is the question. “Culturally, the consensus is divided. Keeping on your kicks is common practice in many Western cultures, while it's unheard of in many Eastern cultures, sometimes for religious reasons. Regardless of custom origins, the question we’ve been sitting on it: How much dirt are you really dragging in by bringing street shoes inside?” Read more at the link in bio and leave your thoughts in the comments below! 👇🏼

"Beet dyes make the most brilliant pink," textile artist Kiva Motnyk (@thompsonstreetstudio) says. Streamline after-school chaos into an efficient entryway system. This entryway console is built from two unfinished wood cabinets, which we painted a soft green. We added wooden legs to elevate the pieces and make room underneath for more storage; you can also mount the cabinets on the wall or stack them. To optimize space stick self-adhesive metal hooks inside the doors, and adjust the shelves (each cabinet comes with two). Next, designate a cubby for everyone in your household—even your pets! In our September issue, NYC-based textile artist Kiva Motnyk of @thompsonstreetstudio shows us the magic of natural dyeing, where organic materials take on a new life from blossoming botanicals to pools of rich color that soak earthy fabric canvases with stunning hues. Avocado pits make pink. Blueberries create violet. Marigolds yield yellow. "It's always kind of an experiment," Motnyk says of her natural dyeing process. "I can never make the same color twice, and I love that." The effects range from subtle, such as pale neutrals produced by onion skins, to deeply dramatic. Swipe the gallery to see Motnyk's process come to life, and pick up a copy of our September issue (or visit the link in bio) to check out the full feature. 👆🏼📷: @gentlandhyers | styled by: @pameladuncansilver
