I have signed up for a 10 day silent meditation retreat and I’m a mix of terrified and excited in equal measure. ⁠ I’ve learnt over the past few years that the things I do that I am nervous about, are often the things that lead to my biggest learnings. Do you define yourself through your work? ⁠ Often the first question we’re asked when we meet someone new is ‘what do you do’? And we feel a pressure that the answer we give defines who we are as a person. ⁠ But what if we are much more than the work that we do? ⁠ As a creative, I used to believe that being creative or more specifically being ‘an actor’ totally defined me. I would get a certain reaction when I told people that was my job and then when I wasn’t working, I would feel a little bit lost and unknowing of how to define myself. ⁠ Then recently I started asking myself the question ‘who am I beneath that definition’? ⁠ And thankfully I came to a more exciting definition - I am Maude, a person who does a lot of things and keeps learning and evolving. Don’t underestimate the power of rest. ⁠ Sometimes I get caught up in the idea that staying busy gets more done, until I get to the point of feeling exhausted and then I have to rest. And then when I rest I become full of energy and new ideas and realise that actually if I had taken more rest in the first place, I would stay more consistently happy, motivated and creative. ⁠ Lesson learnt. I am currently lying on a beach and soaking up the sun and filling my body with rest and my mind with new ideas. Always planning! ⁠Yesterday I co-hosted a retreat day with my wonderful friend @joehouze called EMPOWER. I loved it and feel so grateful to be holding these retreats for people to discover new or old parts of themselves that maybe they’ve been ignoring. ⁠ My aim at the moment is to introduce as many people as I can to lots of different mindfulness techniques until they find one they love - and want to continue practicing daily. I don’t know much about crystals but I find them fascinating and beautiful and I believe they make me feel things in a heightened way. ⁠ I was given my first few crystals by friends of mine at times in my life that I needed support and holding these crystals did make me feel an inner strength. I also love giving them as gifts as I feel there is something magical in giving someone a piece of rock that has a meaning behind it - to give them the support they need in that moment. ⁠ ⁠ I realise talking about crystals is a little woo woo but I have started living my life by removing my pre-concieved ideas of what is NORMAL and acceptable and just trying lots of things with a open mind and continuing with the ones that make me feel good. Crystals are one of the many bizarre new additions that make me feel good. Along with mindfulness practices, defusing oils, writing lots, being surrounded by nature, dancing around to music everyday and singing continuously (much to the annoyance of my partner). Have you ever struggled with the feeling of being left out or not fitting in? From school age these feelings are something that we are made to feel ashamed of but actually it’s totally normal for humans to want to stay connected to each other and to fear being isolated. Over the past year, since changing my lifestyle up quite a lot, I have had moments of fearing being judged or not fitting into to the same groups of friends but I quickly realised that it’s ok to evolve and change and that people will fall in and out of your life depending on what aligns with you at these different moments. ⁠ ⁠ Some relationships in your life are formed because of circumstance, others are formed because you have a deep understanding of each other, others are for partying, some are for deep and meaningful conversations, others are there to pick you up when you’re down and some to bring constant joy into our lives…. none are better than others but some may align more to certain times of your life than others and that’s ok. I have let go of the fear of being judged and friendship dynamics changing as I have realised that by turning up totally as myself in every situation, I have been open to new kinds of relationships forming. Often deeper relationships with those around me already but also inviting in new friendships. Don’t be afraid of change in both yourself or the relationships around you. If you stay in that fear, then you don’t allow any room for growth and evolution. Stepping into the unknown internally, means opening up to a whole new realm of posibilities externally. This is a 📸 from the recent yoga class I led @lululemonuk Spitalfields store. They’re an amazing company who really encourage teachers to stand in their power and support them in doing so. ⁠ This year has been a year full of jumping into unknown’s for me, saying yes to all of the opportunities thrown my way that feel in alignment to my goal of finding a mindfulness practice that works for everyone. ⁠ Since I introduced yoga, meditation and healing into my life consistently, the changes in my self acceptance and inner confidence has been huge. I now feel I am able to speak my truth at all times, filter out the things that don’t feel good for me in my life, know how to nurture myself when I’m feeling low and generally live with more joy. Are you back to work after a lovely summer holiday and finding it hard to stay motivated? ⁠ Finding balance in all areas of your life can be tricky but I feel the most important way to feel satisfied. I am noticing more and more with the people I work with and teach, that it is vital for your mental health to maintain a work life balance and it’s also key to find balance within your work and balance in your home life too. ⁠ Part of this balance for me is finding ways to keep changing things up and continuously growing. So if there is some area of your life that you’re feeling stuck in, try and introduce something new into your life to counterbalance it. Maybe a new skill to try, maybe adding in a new form of exercise, start reading something that fascinates you or arrange more travel. There are so many ways to keep the mind and body motivated but you have to give yourself space and time to find out what it is that you enjoy. Try starting with 10 minutes of meditation every morning (if you don’t meditate already) and find new ideas to keep you feeling alive when the motivation fades. This pose is called crow and it a great one for really learning to trust in your body and balance. When confronted with balancing the entire body weight on your hands, it can feel a little scary at first. But like all poses in yoga, once conquered can feel like a great achievement. ⁠ My yoga teacher taught me, that the yoga mat is like holding a mirror up to your life. How you show up on the mat is often a reflection of how you behave in your day-to-day life. For example if you are confronted with a pose during a yoga practice that scares you, how do you react? Do you avoid it and take the easy route or do you challenge yourself to try it, even if it doesn’t work and you fall at first? Or when something is a struggle can you stay with the discomfort or do you pull away straight away and never find out what is just at the other side of that discomfort? Learning this made my yoga practice a completely different experience as I then started looking for clues in my behavioural patterns that I was unaware of and once your have awareness, you have a choice to change.⁠ ⁠ 📸 @mattbenstone?? #YogaPose?? #ChallengeYourself?? #MaudeHirstYoga?? #EnergyRise

Ever find that you get so caught up in the repetition of everyday life that you end up doing the same journey over and over again and forget that you’ve done it at all? Arriving at your destination and feeling like you have no recollection of the space between when you left destination A and arrived at destination B? ⁠ I used to get this a lot, unconsciously travelling through life. Waking up in the morning, doing the same routine and without realising, a day would pass and I wouldn’t have really had much awareness of the choices I was making. Relying on the pathways that the brain had made from my past to create what was happening in the present moment. ⁠ ⁠ Statistically, lots of people live their lives like this. Especially if you have a 9-5 job in the same office everyday, it is easy to go into autopilot mode and almost create a repeated pattern of behaviour based on our past. Making an effort to switch things up and become conscious of the decisions you’re making day to day – doesn’t just make life more fun and invite in more opportunities but it can actually make the body healthier. ⁠ I find this stuff so fascinating. Try bringing awareness to the times in your life that you are just moving unconsciously and interrupt the pattern. ⁠ ⁠ Begin to make new pathways in the mind and body and listen to what the body actually wants to do moment by moment. Did you know that being upside down in an inversion changes the chemistry in our brain and is believed to improve brain function, release neurotransmitters, balance hormones, and release endorphins.⁠ ⁠ Inversions can also help develop patience, focus, and listening skills. So if you’re feeling a little sad today, why not get yourself upside down and change your perspective on things. ⁠ It is not uncommon to feel immediately uplifted after an inversion. I’m not saying to attempt a hard arm balancing inversion on your first try, maybe just a downward facing dog or even lying down with your legs up the wall. SLEEP.⁠ Do you get enough of it? Ever worry about being judged on social media? I have. When I started my yoga and meditation journey I realised I had found something that was having a hugely positive effect on my life but thought that sharing any of it seemed self-indulgent and not aligned with the version of me I wanted to portray as the ‘actor’. ⁠ ⁠ Then I realised that this was exactly the problem - I was constantly hiding behind a character or script as an actor and my social media account was again a hiding behind a non-authentic version of me because I was scared of judgement.⁠ ⁠ I realise that yoga and meditation isn’t for everyone but in sharing myself honestly and what I’m doing in my life, I have stopped worrying about being judged and have stopped judging myself too. ⁠ This can be a platform to share experiences, in the hope that maybe it will be what someone needs to see or it might cheer someone up. Are you flexible enough to practice yoga? This is one of the main reservations I hear that stops people getting on the mat.⁠ ⁠ The answer of course is YES you are. Flexibility is such a small part of what yoga is about, plus you will gain flexibility once you practice. The physical part of yoga (Asana) was created thousands of years ago to assist people into a longer seated meditation. It is all about moving your body in a way that allows more stillness and comfort while sitting for long periods of time. So don’t judge the way you will look before stepping onto the mat, just step onto the mat and move your body. Allow the physical movement to switch off your brain chatter. Ever noticed that the sunshine changes your mood? For some reason when the sun is shining, I wake up and want to be out in nature, socialising with a huge smile whacked across my face. Living in London, I also notice a huge change in the people around me, people actually make eye contact and smile. It’s strange that nature can have such a huge impact on us but we’ve somehow totally disconnected ourselves with the power it can bring. Why do mindfulness? ⁠ Before my mindfulness journey a few years ago I felt like I had little awareness of my behavioural patterns and things were showing up in my life that I didn’t like but I wasn’t sure why?⁠ Mindfulness has been the key to me bringing awareness to all aspects of myself and why I was attracting certain people and things. Believe that you can achieve anything and that someone telling you NO won’t stop you achieving your goals and guess what, you believe success is yours to grab. Have a belief system that no means no and you may get knocked off your course. I used to run away from academic exams when I was younger because of my fear of not being smart enough. My mum, sister and brother are all very academic and being the youngest, I decided I would take a different route to avoid comparison (not that anyone but myself would have compared - but my younger self didn’t realise this yet). I am glad I have approached life from an alternative angle but continuing to learn, grow and complete courses in my adult life has felt really important to me and I get irrationally over-excited by certificates. However, while studying as an adult, I realised that actually, I was always smart enough, I just hadn’t found out that my way of learning was a little different to the mainstream way. There are different modalities of learning kinaesthetically (through feeling), visually and auditory. We are taught in schools that we all need to learn through one modality (mainly auditory), leaving many kids feeling stupid and unable to learn. The truth is they just haven’t found out their individual learning style yet. I learn kinaesthetically, I need to feel things to hold onto them as knowledge, hence why I have chosen active careers. I need to physically say things out loud, feel them in my body or re-write things. Knowing this about myself has been a game changer for learning. I now feel excited at every opportunity I get to learn and share something new. Bring on the endless lessons that life has to offer. I can now jump in without fear of failure. I still get things wrong but being excited about the learning makes it all worth it. I woke up today feeling excited about the amount of people who are wanting to find out about meditation. How to do it? What the benefits are? How often do they need to do it to see an impact? It seems to be more popular now than ever before and I’m excited because I feel bringing a regular practice into your life can transform it entirely. Empowering you to live with more clarity and direction, guided by YOU. • I don’t think it’s just a coincidence that so many people have developed an interest in a practice that is based around self exploration and finding empowerment from within. I believe we’re at a time in society when TRUST is becoming harder to find. We were taught from a young age to trust authority but now we are being told that lots of the public authority figures are lying to us. So people are seeking another truth, another place to find that authoritative voice for direction and meditating is the pathway to finding that from inside yourself. A way to connect to your feelings, your beliefs, your instinct and begin listening to that guidance. After a week full of travelling, teaching and exploring Denmark (which was bloody beautiful) and another adventure in Ibiza starting next week, I am feeling a whole lot of gratitude today. This has been the most explorative, scary, fulfilling, challenging, joyful but exciting year of my life. Just over a year ago my world was a little shaken up, I remember feeling at the time, this could break me or make me and I decided to follow the latter, realising that actually losing the stability around me meant the opportunity to rebuild in a new more enjoyable way. I spent some time figuring out what makes me really happy and then finding ways to do lots of that. I realised I love to travel, build and nurture amazing relationships, learn, collaborate with inspiring people and giggle (a lot). So I wake up everyday searching for more of all these things. A year on and I am now travelling, sharing, loving and learning more than I’ve ever done before. Sometimes the biggest struggles in life can turn into the best discoveries. Keep exploring yourself and the world.     I have signed up for a 10 day silent meditation retreat and I’m a mix of terrified and excited in equal measure. ⁠ I’ve learnt over the past few years that the things I do that I am nervous about, are often the things that lead to my biggest learnings.     Do you define yourself through your work? ⁠ Often the first question we’re asked when we meet someone new is ‘what do you do’? And we feel a pressure that the answer we give defines who we are as a person. ⁠ But what if we are much more than the work that we do? ⁠ As a creative, I used to believe that being creative or more specifically being ‘an actor’ totally defined me. I would get a certain reaction when I told people that was my job and then when I wasn’t working, I would feel a little bit lost and unknowing of how to define myself. ⁠ Then recently I started asking myself the question ‘who am I beneath that definition’? ⁠ And thankfully I came to a more exciting definition - I am Maude, a person who does a lot of things and keeps learning and evolving.     Don’t underestimate the power of rest. ⁠ Sometimes I get caught up in the idea that staying busy gets more done, until I get to the point of feeling exhausted and then I have to rest. And then when I rest I become full of energy and new ideas and realise that actually if I had taken more rest in the first place, I would stay more consistently happy, motivated and creative. ⁠ Lesson learnt. I am currently lying on a beach and soaking up the sun and filling my body with rest and my mind with new ideas.     Always planning! ⁠Yesterday I co-hosted a retreat day with my wonderful friend @joehouze called EMPOWER. I loved it and feel so grateful to be holding these retreats for people to discover new or old parts of themselves that maybe they’ve been ignoring. ⁠ My aim at the moment is to introduce as many people as I can to lots of different mindfulness techniques until they find one they love - and want to continue practicing daily.     I don’t know much about crystals but I find them fascinating and beautiful and I believe they make me feel things in a heightened way. ⁠ I was given my first few crystals by friends of mine at times in my life that I needed support and holding these crystals did make me feel an inner strength. I also love giving them as gifts as I feel there is something magical in giving someone a piece of rock that has a meaning behind it - to give them the support they need in that moment. ⁠ ⁠ I realise talking about crystals is a little woo woo but I have started living my life by removing my pre-concieved ideas of what is NORMAL and acceptable and just trying lots of things with a open mind and continuing with the ones that make me feel good. Crystals are one of the many bizarre new additions that make me feel good. Along with mindfulness practices, defusing oils, writing lots, being surrounded by nature, dancing around to music everyday and singing continuously (much to the annoyance of my partner).     Have you ever struggled with the feeling of being left out or not fitting in? From school age these feelings are something that we are made to feel ashamed of but actually it’s totally normal for humans to want to stay connected to each other and to fear being isolated. Over the past year, since changing my lifestyle up quite a lot, I have had moments of fearing being judged or not fitting into to the same groups of friends but I quickly realised that it’s ok to evolve and change and that people will fall in and out of your life depending on what aligns with you at these different moments. ⁠ ⁠ Some relationships in your life are formed because of circumstance, others are formed because you have a deep understanding of each other, others are for partying, some are for deep and meaningful conversations, others are there to pick you up when you’re down and some to bring constant joy into our lives…. none are better than others but some may align more to certain times of your life than others and that’s ok. I have let go of the fear of being judged and friendship dynamics changing as I have realised that by turning up totally as myself in every situation, I have been open to new kinds of relationships forming. Often deeper relationships with those around me already but also inviting in new friendships. Don’t be afraid of change in both yourself or the relationships around you. If you stay in that fear, then you don’t allow any room for growth and evolution. Stepping into the unknown internally, means opening up to a whole new realm of posibilities externally.     This is a 📸 from the recent yoga class I led @lululemonuk Spitalfields store. They’re an amazing company who really encourage teachers to stand in their power and support them in doing so. ⁠ This year has been a year full of jumping into unknown’s for me, saying yes to all of the opportunities thrown my way that feel in alignment to my goal of finding a mindfulness practice that works for everyone. ⁠ Since I introduced yoga, meditation and healing into my life consistently, the changes in my self acceptance and inner confidence has been huge. I now feel I am able to speak my truth at all times, filter out the things that don’t feel good for me in my life, know how to nurture myself when I’m feeling low and generally live with more joy.     Are you back to work after a lovely summer holiday and finding it hard to stay motivated? ⁠ Finding balance in all areas of your life can be tricky but I feel the most important way to feel satisfied. I am noticing more and more with the people I work with and teach, that it is vital for your mental health to maintain a work life balance and it’s also key to find balance within your work and balance in your home life too. ⁠ Part of this balance for me is finding ways to keep changing things up and continuously growing. Try starting with 10 minutes of meditation every morning (if you don’t meditate already) and find new ideas to keep you feeling alive when the motivation fades.     This pose is called crow and it a great one for really learning to trust in your body and balance. When confronted with balancing the entire body weight on your hands, it can feel a little scary at first. But like all poses in yoga, once conquered can feel like a great achievement. ⁠ My yoga teacher taught me, that the yoga mat is like holding a mirror up to your life. How you show up on the mat is often a reflection of how you behave in your day-to-day life. For example if you are confronted with a pose during a yoga practice that scares you, how do you react? Do you avoid it and take the easy route or do you challenge yourself to try it, even if it doesn’t work and you fall at first? Or when something is a struggle can you stay with the discomfort or do you pull away straight away and never find out what is just at the other side of that discomfort?     Ever find that you get so caught up in the repetition of everyday life that you end up doing the same journey over and over again and forget that you’ve done it at all? Arriving at your destination and feeling like you have no recollection of the space between when you left destination A and arrived at destination B? ⁠ I used to get this a lot, unconsciously travelling through life. Waking up in the morning, doing the same routine and without realising, a day would pass and I wouldn’t have really had much awareness of the choices I was making. Relying on the pathways that the brain had made from my past to create what was happening in the present moment. ⁠ ⁠ Statistically, lots of people live their lives like this. Especially if you have a 9-5 job in the same office everyday, it is easy to go into autopilot mode and almost create a repeated pattern of behaviour based on our past. Making an effort to switch things up and become conscious of the decisions you’re making day to day – doesn’t just make life more fun and invite in more opportunities but it can actually make the body healthier. ⁠ I find this stuff so fascinating. Try bringing awareness to the times in your life that you are just moving unconsciously and interrupt the pattern. ⁠ ⁠ Begin to make new pathways in the mind and body and listen to what the body actually wants to do moment by moment.     Did you know that being upside down in an inversion changes the chemistry in our brain and is believed to improve brain function, release neurotransmitters, balance hormones, and release endorphins.⁠ ⁠ Inversions can also help develop patience, focus, and listening skills. So if you’re feeling a little sad today, why not get yourself upside down and change your perspective on things. ⁠ It is not uncommon to feel immediately uplifted after an inversion. I’m not saying to attempt a hard arm balancing inversion on your first try, maybe just a downward facing dog or even lying down with your legs up the wall.     Ever worry about being judged on social media? I have. When I started my yoga and meditation journey I realised I had found something that was having a hugely positive effect on my life but thought that sharing any of it seemed self-indulgent and not aligned with the version of me I wanted to portray as the ‘actor’. ⁠ ⁠ Then I realised that this was exactly the problem - I was constantly hiding behind a character or script as an actor and my social media account was again a hiding behind a non-authentic version of me because I was scared of judgement.⁠ ⁠ I realise that yoga and meditation isn’t for everyone but in sharing myself honestly and what I’m doing in my life, I have stopped worrying about being judged and have stopped judging myself too. ⁠ This can be a platform to share experiences, in the hope that maybe it will be what someone needs to see or it might cheer someone up.     Are you flexible enough to practice yoga? This is one of the main reservations I hear that stops people getting on the mat.⁠ ⁠ The answer of course is YES you are. Flexibility is such a small part of what yoga is about, plus you will gain flexibility once you practice. The physical part of yoga (Asana) was created thousands of years ago to assist people into a longer seated meditation. It is all about moving your body in a way that allows more stillness and comfort while sitting for long periods of time. So don’t judge the way you will look before stepping onto the mat, just step onto the mat and move your body. Allow the physical movement to switch off your brain chatter.     Ever noticed that the sunshine changes your mood? For some reason when the sun is shining, I wake up and want to be out in nature, socialising with a huge smile whacked across my face. Living in London, I also notice a huge change in the people around me, people actually make eye contact and smile. It’s strange that nature can have such a huge impact on us but we’ve somehow totally disconnected ourselves with the power it can bring.     I used to run away from academic exams when I was younger because of my fear of not being smart enough. My mum, sister and brother are all very academic and being the youngest, I decided I would take a different route to avoid comparison (not that anyone but myself would have compared - but my younger self didn’t realise this yet). I am glad I have approached life from an alternative angle but continuing to learn, grow and complete courses in my adult life has felt really important to me and I get irrationally over-excited by certificates. However, while studying as an adult, I realised that actually, I was always smart enough, I just hadn’t found out that my way of learning was a little different to the mainstream way. There are different modalities of learning kinaesthetically (through feeling), visually and auditory. We are taught in schools that we all need to learn through one modality (mainly auditory), leaving many kids feeling stupid and unable to learn. The truth is they just haven’t found out their individual learning style yet. I learn kinaesthetically, I need to feel things to hold onto them as knowledge, hence why I have chosen active careers. I need to physically say things out loud, feel them in my body or re-write things. Knowing this about myself has been a game changer for learning. I now feel excited at every opportunity I get to learn and share something new. Bring on the endless lessons that life has to offer. I can now jump in without fear of failure. I still get things wrong but being excited about the learning makes it all worth it.     I woke up today feeling excited about the amount of people who are wanting to find out about meditation. How to do it? What the benefits are? How often do they need to do it to see an impact? It seems to be more popular now than ever before and I’m excited because I feel bringing a regular practice into your life can transform it entirely. Empowering you to live with more clarity and direction, guided by YOU. • I don’t think it’s just a coincidence that so many people have developed an interest in a practice that is based around self exploration and finding empowerment from within. I believe we’re at a time in society when TRUST is becoming harder to find. We were taught from a young age to trust authority but now we are being told that lots of the public authority figures are lying to us. So people are seeking another truth, another place to find that authoritative voice for direction and meditating is the pathway to finding that from inside yourself. A way to connect to your feelings, your beliefs, your instinct and begin listening to that guidance.     After a week full of travelling, teaching and exploring Denmark (which was bloody beautiful) and another adventure in Ibiza starting next week, I am feeling a whole lot of gratitude today. This has been the most explorative, scary, fulfilling, challenging, joyful but exciting year of my life. Just over a year ago my world was a little shaken up, I remember feeling at the time, this could break me or make me and I decided to follow the latter, realising that actually losing the stability around me meant the opportunity to rebuild in a new more enjoyable way. I spent some time figuring out what makes me really happy and then finding ways to do lots of that. I realised I love to travel, build and nurture amazing relationships, learn, collaborate with inspiring people and giggle (a lot). So I wake up everyday searching for more of all these things. A year on and I am now travelling, sharing, loving and learning more than I’ve ever done before. Sometimes the biggest struggles in life can turn into the best discoveries. Keep exploring yourself and the world.
