I miss Mike every day but reading the new oral history about him: Life Isn’t Everything, is like having a small piece of him back. Can’t read enough of it.

For the first Sunday brunch of the year—make vegan s’mores pancakes! Mix together: 1 cup flour 1 tbsp baking powder 1 tbsp Apple cider vinegar 2 tbsp sugar As much cinnamon as you like! Then add: 1 cup of plant-based milk (I like to use my homemade almond milk) 2 tsp of vanilla (or to your taste) Whisk until it’s smooth and no lumps Directions: 1. Heat canola oil in a pan and then spoon in circles of the batter. 2. Add vegan chocolate chips and vegan marshmallows (I use dandy’s). 3. Flip and serve with maple syrup when golden brown. Have a sweet 2020!

Just started Lost Children Archive and it’s gorgeous, poetic, inventive, and political. While the book is about marital tension, child migrant detention, and atrocities against Native Americans — Valeria Luiselli is able to find beauty and even occasional humor within such dark topics. I’m so grateful for this most beautiful decade yet— I married my partner in crime @benjaminmillepied, gave birth to two miraculous children, directed my first film (A Tale of Love and Darkness), produced a documentary about something I care passionately about (Eating Animals), got to play incredible characters working with artists I love and admire (Black Swan, Jackie, Vox Lux, Annihilation, among others), and found my voice and sisterhood with some truly incredible humans through @timesupnow. Hoping the next decade only brings further adventures, beauty and fulfillment— and a deepening appreciation of our planet and its wonders. Wishing you all a beautiful and fulfilling new year and new decade. Happy 2020!

Since Hanukkah is only a day away, I thought I’d share a surprisingly easy and simple vegan latke recipe. All you need is: canola oil, salt, and potatoes. (I picked up russet potatoes, purple potatoes, and sweet potatoes for variety). Full recipe below: Ingredients: 1. 3 potatoes (the traditional recipe usually calls for russet potatoes, but purple potatoes also work well) 2. Canola oil 3. Salt Directions: 1. Peel and shred the potatoes on a box grater 2. Place in bowls and use a paper towel to suck out any excess moisture 3. Coat the pan in canola oil 4. Season shredded potatoes with salt 5. Place handfuls of the potato mixture in the pan (ensure there is enough oil) and fry until golden brown on both sides 6. Serve with homemade apple sauce; (to make apple sauce, cut 3 apples into cubes and boil with one cup of water and 3 tbsp of brown sugar, 1 tsp of cinnamon; taste for desired sweetness and texture)

At the @anewwayoflifela gala the other night, introducing the incredible: Desmond and Sheena Meade, truly amazing human beings. They got the Florida measure passed that reinstated voting rights to formerly incarcerated people (1.4 million voters)... the largest voting extension in the US since the end of Jim Crow. They are legends. And of course, a huge thank you to my friend Susan Burton, the founder of a @anewwayoflifela, an organization committed to helping women break the cycle of entrapment in the criminal justice system. We happened to be lucky enough to catch this mother cheetah and her 7 cubs hanging out in the open savanna. But cheetahs are unfortunately Africa’s most endangered big cat. ... what do you eat for Thanksgiving, if you don’t have turkey?? So I’m here to dispel some popular myths about eating #plantbased.

Happy almost Thanksgiving! This is my favorite #plantbased Thanksgiving recipe that can be either sweet or savory. I used butternut squash, leeks, cauliflower, mushrooms (for savory tarts) and apples (for sweet tarts), but you can add whatever fruit and veggies you prefer. Recipe below. Ingredients: Leeks Cauliflower Mushroom Butternut squash Apples Vegan puff pastry Onions Salt Olive oil Avocado oil Directions: In 4 separate pans, sauté: 1. Peeled, cored, sliced apples in maple syrup and cinnamon 2. Cubed butternut squash and chopped onions in olive oil with salt 3. Chopped Mushrooms and garlic in olive oil and salt 4. Chopped leeks and cauliflower in avocado oil and salt While veggies are cooking: 1. Prepare tray w/ parchment paper + preheat oven to 400. 2. Cut defrosted vegan puff pastry into squares. Once veggies and fruit are cooked through: 1. Add the ingredients on top off the puff pastry. 2. Pinch squares at corners to make little walls around the puff pastry (as seen in video!) 3. Drizzle olive oil on top of the savory ones. 4. Put in oven for 10 min or until pastry is cooked through (mine took 15)

Now that it’s getting colder, I like to make my kids almond butter and jelly oatmeal for breakfast. Head to Stories to see how I make it. #WhatNatCooks 👩🏻‍🍳 Ingredients for oatmeal: Almond butter Strawberries Maple syrup Oatmeal Water Directions: Step 1. Cook oatmeal in water Step 2. Sauté berries and maple syrup Step 3. Once oatmeal is cooked, put everything together. (I put the almond butter in first so it melts.) Then top with the oatmeal, berries, and syrup. Ingredients for nut milk: Nuts (I used cashews but you can use any kind of nut... almond, hazel etc) Dates Water Directions: Blend it together to make your own nut milk.

Paws for Life is a prison dog training program for PTSD service dogs and CGC certified adoptable dogs. I saw first-hand how their program is healing for both the trainer and dog. Spent last night toasting @ladanceproject and my talented husband @benjaminmillepied!

Yesterday, I joined fellow activists and artists w/ @iwillharness to visit the women’s jail in Lynwood and a @anewwayoflifela’s re-entry houses. The vast majority of these incarcerated women have children. And many are also victims of sexual or physical assault. Often, when people are released from incarceration, they have no money, no shelter, and have difficulty finding a job because of their records. Thankfully #SusanBurton is an angel among us, committed to changing the way the most vulnerable humans are treated. Through her organization @anewwayoflifela, she provides these women with a safe place to sleep, and a chance to rebuild their lives. Visit @anewayoflifela to learn more.

Today was a VERY IMPORTANT day for me. I read every single Babysitter’s Club book when I was a kid. Once when I was 9, I waited in line for 4 hours at my local bookstore to meet Ann M Martin. And today I got this in the mail from her. I feel so lucky that I grew up with books about girls who worked together, supported each other, were entrepreneurs, and who all had very different personalities. I still identify as a Kristy mixed with Stacey and a dash of Dawn. Which babysitter are you?
