One of the greatest joys of parenting is getting to share with your children the things you love most in the world. For me? Apocalypse Now. Saw it when I was 15 and it changed my life. Didn’t know movies could do what that movie did. The deepest possible dive into the hearts of darkness, the grotesque absurdity of war and the macabre shadow side we all carry. Plus Marlon Brando dropped down from Krypton hell and Dennis Hopper channeling Dennis Hopper.

Sometimes there are people who come into your life at exactly the right time for exactly the right reason. When I was a senior in High School I wandered into the GREAT BOOKS class of one Ms Raissa Landor at New Trier High School. Over the course of that year we read Nietszche, Gibbon, The book of Job, Viktor Frankl, Rousseau and Kant, Plato and many, many others. And guess what? No papers. You were graded on how you LEAD the discussion and the points you made and how vigorously and articulately you defended your theses. As a teacher, she only asked questions, she never gave answers. Questions. Life’s biggest questions. Questions posed from the dawn of man when shaman/priests/actor/storyteller/madmen created our myths, through to the Greeks, the Romans, the legends of humanity’s myriad indigenous tribes, the cafes of the enlightenment through to college campuses in dorm rooms at midnight. This methodology blew my pimply mind. The connect-the-dots between all the eternal themes of philosophy, literature and spirituality. Love. The soul. Death. Morality. God. Will. Self and consciousness. Perception. The ideas fostered in that classroom would percolate in my mind up until this present day. There would have been no @SoulPancake without her. And, guess what? We got to visit again where I interviewed her for a new podcast (METAPHYSICAL MILKSHAKE coming in Sept on @HearLuminary Media with @RezaAslan). She is as sharp and vivacious in her late 70s as she was 30 years ago. And she still reads NON-STOP! Thank you, Ms Landor for showing hundreds and hundreds of young minds the way forward through the greatest sets of ideas the human mind has ever birthed. Thank you for being my teacher. And my friend.

So on our recent sojourn up the I-5 through Washington State we swung off of that mighty, life-giving freeway (the Mississippi River of the western states) to visit the houses I grew up in. We didn’t knock on any doors because that would have been weird but we did stalk some driveways (which is also weird). First up? My rental home in Olympia, Wa for K-2 (front and back), then our rented house in Lake Forest Park for 3-8 and the “fancy” condo across the street we bought and lived in for 9th and 10th grade. I also included my elementary school and it’s cafeteria/auditorium where I gave my very first performance as Schroeder in “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” Isn’t it incredible, for those over a certain age, the flood of visceral sensations that flow around your body when you visit childhood homes and those sacred, ordinary places steeped in memory?

Ode to a Champion - Oona Wilson-Reinhorn (2004-2019) You just showed up. Like a brown champion of doggishness. With your waggish eyes that said, “I belong here. I’m yours. You’re mine. Let’s do this.” You were equal parts splendid and evil. Ready with a radiant smile that said, “Here’s the dog of the century! The San Fernando Valley has its canine and it’s name is Oona!” And don’t get me started on the mud puddles. You would plop right into them like a pig into stew, wild-eyed and dreaming of the doggy olympics. And when Walter came home from the hospital you laid right next to his basinet like the Cerebus of Los Angeles, fierce and loyal. You loved that boy. And how. Fence guarder. Suple coated couch lover. Pet petter petted. Snuggler of royalty. Queen of the pack. You loved your cookies and where you’re going there are cookies aplenty. And big fields of wiley dogs and boys like Walter to play with all day long. And couches to snuggle on and that one big mud puddle in the sky to lie in and wiggle in and be as naughty as you ever want to be.

So I was killing some time in the soulless mall-scape of the Phoenix Sky Harbor International airport when I stumbled upon the non-denominational “chapel.” It’s essentially just a quiet little room with a tiled floor, some churchy chairs and no religious symbology to be seen. At the apse of the humble, shabby space was not a cross or a lectern but this poster, mounted on the wall. I’ve seen this poster before. Or one like it. As a member of the Baha’i Faith, which acknowledges the essential truth and divinity of all the worlds major faiths, the universality of the “Golden Rule” as a common thread that runs through every major spiritual tradition (as well as many secular ones) is a relatively well-discussed and pondered idea. But what struck me is how NEEDED all these little phrases ARE during this corrosive, divisive time. Basically every issue we have going on right now can be solved by all parties sitting down and reading their way through this particular starburst of wise religious sayings. As we think about how others might feel about what we’re about to say or do and weigh whether or not we would like that said or done to us, our compassion for the other grows. And compassion for those most different from us is where it’s all at.

An update from @lidehaiti #repost ・・・ Black smoke rises up from the streets of Haiti today. Not long ago what hung in the air over streets in the Artibonite were banners painted by LIDE girls, declaring “Edikasyon pa yon Ikrim” (Education is not a crime). But again this week in Haiti, education has been made as illusive as the air as burning tires, random gunfire, and protests that quickly turn violent prevent girls and all youth from attending school. We are again on shelter in place, and so we thank our friend Cesar Bougon Massena over at Artists Institute for sharing his images of this heartbreaking scene.

The girls of @lidehaiti are fighting climate change with a song. Read about it below and please consider becoming a monthly donor. ・・・ We are simply blown away by this incredible song ---written and performed by the Lidè girls which seeks to spread the word to their families, villages, and the global community about climate change and to offer some daily solutions to Haiti’s burgeoning environmental crisis.* This educational initiative came out of the newest addition to our LIDE curriculum, called TRANSITIONS, envisioned by our 99% Haitian staff and facilitated by our bright and inspiring young interns. "Transitions" is a bridge program to help Lidè girls transfer the creative skills they've learned in our programs and transform them into visionary, service-based solutions and apprenticeships in their communities. Please join our growing team of partners, supporters and collaborators to help us spread this message across Haiti and to help grow "Transitions" and our community empowerment efforts! The greatest way you can help is to become a monthly donor! Even 5$ a month will go a LONG way in supporting the grass roots education of these precious and powerful girls. Link to become recurring donor in bio or text LIDE to 44321. *Current statistics show that Haiti is one of the most vulnerable countries on earth when it comes to the impacts of climate change, according to the latest report from the Global Climate Risk Index. #ClimateChange #Haiti #WorldEnvironmentDay #Deforestation #CapacityBuilding #CapacityStrengthening #joinus

So my friend Jamey texted me this photo. Looks pretty innocent at first, right? But when you learn that he and his sister are African American, the photo turns instantly chilling. This was hung in a tree in her front yard in suburban Los Angeles, to be found by her seventeen year-old daughter. When the police were called they said, essentially, “what’s the big deal?” Yolanda lost it. What’s the big deal? Well, officer, the noose is the symbol of lynching which was used to hang thousands of African Americans, especially by the Klan. Granted, this is a pretty lame noose. Might have been made by some local kids or something. Who knows. But the fact is it is as strong a symbol of racial hatred, violence and oppression as a Swastika. Many folks are in denial about the extent to which racism exists in our country in 2019. Just ask a Black Person. They will tell you stories. Jamey told me today that last year, while playing golf, he was looking for his ball in the brush and a white guy who wanted to play through called out “Hey, you can hurry up, we don’t have you picking cotton anymore!” Not sure if he was trying to be funny or not but literally Jamey’s great grandfather was an ACTUAL SLAVE on a plantation and was regularly beaten there. That’s not that long ago. Great grandfather. And, perhaps, a relative or two of Jamey’s were lynched. Or saw a lynching. Or heard of a lynching. And now, his niece gets to be reminded of what hate looks like. Right in her own front yard in suburban LA.

Recently found this mock-up I made for my book cover (from 3 years ago). Note the lamer title. But a much cooler photo, I think.

Congrats to the sublime @joy.harjo on being appointed Poet Laureate! (The 1st Native American woman to be named!) Her work is musical, personal and transcendent. And SOOO American. Her poem “She Had Some Horses” was picked by @HolidayReinhorn to be read at our wedding in 1995. Longtime fans!!! Xoxox 💌📜📓
