I had the most incredible day today in #marcelacastillos third grade class. Marcela is the amazing teacher using #harrypotter books as a way to encourage literacy. After @zimcares and @jakkstoys heard about this class, they wanted to help. So today I got to give these special third graders their own wands and Owls (no #howlers delivered) We read a book, had a long conversation about bullying and other things on 8 year old minds, and most importantly we talked about spreading the love of reading to their siblings and friends. I won’t bombard you with a million pictures (well here anyway... I might in my stories) but I promise my excitement and smiles were as big as theirs. Thank you to LaLa Charter School and all the kids and their parents.

So (gulp) 19 years ago, @realfreddieprinze and I took our first trip as a new couple, to #lasvegas (and it was my first time in Vegas) One of the things we did, was ride the gondolas at the @venetianvegas. I recently heard about this incredible movement on social media #clearthelist, to help teachers obtain the school supplies that consistently go uncovered by their school districts. Did you know that teachers on average spend almost 500 dollars a year of their own money for these supplies (and often a lot more) Instantly I knew just the teacher I wanted to help- Marcela Castillo. She’s a dedicated educator, with a passion for all things @harrypotterfilm and has found a way to engage her students using this magical story (a passion I share, and I’m sure many of you do too) Below I’m going to share a little note from Marcela and I will attach her @amazon wish list in this post (and in bio and a swipe in story) Pls help #clearthelist and give her deserving students every opportunity to succeed. From Marcela- Hi my name is Marcela Castillo, and I’m a 3grade dual immersion teacher at Los Angeles Leadership Primary Academy in Lincoln Heights LALA is a title One school, meaning (they receive federal funding) I work with a diverse population and most of my students come from low income families. As you know for some students school is a place where they spend most of their time and have a safe space with someone to trust. I make it a personal goal to make my room inviting. This year we have a Harry Potter themed classroom, where all students are no longer Muggles but WIZARDS. I also incorporated the first Harry Potter book (and on audio to use for their comprehension skills) It is my goal to have two class sets of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer‘s Stone for my students, to allow them to track along with the audio too. But like every teacher, I would want my students to have their school supplies to start the year off on the right foot and not have anxiety for missing supplies. So, full disclosure, @theprommusical wasn’t necessarily on my list to see. My daughter saw the performance on the @thetonyawards and was adamant we see it. Boy am I glad, because I was blown away. It’s truly an important show. Thank you, truly, to the cast of the Prom. I cried hard, but I also laughed hard. And my daughter walked away understanding that she has a voice, capable of making great change. Acceptance, selflessness, compassion, all themes we can always use more of. And on top of all that, the song “we look to you” perfectly encompasses every reason I love Broadway. Please see this show.

That hotel life though

First of all, if you haven’t read this weeks beautiful @people magazine article on my girl @selmablair ... what are you waiting for?!? Secondly I want to take a minute, to not just thank Selma’s friends, but to thank my friends, some of whom have never even met Selma. Watching your friend face disease, you feel so helpless. Everything you think of seems small in comparison. But what I’ve come to learn is that no gesture is small. I realized, it was very hard for Selma to cook and shop, and healthy eating is so important, when you are sick. A friend introduced me to #mealtrain. It’s the easiest way to organize food delivery to someone who needs it. I sent an email around about it, and within minutes, every slot was filled. So many friends of mine, who don’t even know Selma signed up, just to do something kind for someone who was struggling. Talk about restoring faith in human kindness. Thank you to everyone who participated, and to those who continue to.
