We need to make noise about what is happening on #Sudan. Do not turn away. Do not look away. State sponsored massacres are happening. Please look to the helpers, and help. Spread the word. Today we #WearOrange 🧡 To honor both gun violence victims and survivors. The people who died in prayer. In churches. In synagogues. In mosques. The people who lost their lives at the movies. At concerts. The kids executed in their high schools. In middle schools. In elementary schools. Pre-schools, even. Kids killed on college campuses. The folks who died when they thought they would be dancing. In a bar. A nightclub. The ones who were killed in a hospital, where you’re meant to heal. In the airport. The newsroom. The yoga studio. At home. Where women are 5x more likely to die in a domestic dispute if a gun is present. We honor those killed in their offices. In their city municipal building. In a restaurant. Those killed on their military base. At their local bowling alley. Standing on a street corner. Those lost because they showed up for their community at a political event, on what was apparently the wrong day. I wear orange for my cousin’s nine year old daughter — who I never got to meet because we always thought there would be plenty of opportunities for the family to eventually be in the same state at the same time — None of us could have imagined that a grown man would shoot a nine year old girl in the chest, indiscriminately, as though a little child could ever deserve such a thing. Time is an illusion. I will never forget that. We all wear orange to call attention to the national crisis that kills 100 Americans every single day. We do not have to live and die like this. There is a better way. @momsdemand @everytown @iamavoter #momsdemandaction #everytown #gunviolence #iamavoter

1/2 A few months ago I had the pleasure of doing an overhaul of my house with the amazing people at @lifeinjeneral. I’d been slowly feeling suffocated by stuff. Things. Tchotchkes. Side tables. For 15 years I’d lived in two states, and when I got everything home under one roof, rather than pair it all down my inner Sentimental Sally took over and I crammed memories and books and dish ware and papers — seriously what is with all the paperwork!? I ask that question of LIFE itself! — into every available space. And then there was no space to breathe. Piles of organized chaos would pop up near the washer and dryer, or on the corner of the couch in the living room. Occasionally there would be suitcases everywhere because “I travel so much for work!” They’d come and go, sure, but the piles remained. The garage was utter insanity, but because I never had to look at it I never really did. I just stopped going in there. I couldn’t figure out why I was SO good at helping other people move, organize, and edit, and yet I couldn’t see my own stuff clearly. I could clear out a friend’s home in a weekend, but couldn’t see the forest for the trees of my own stuff. Marie Kondo says you can do it yourself. Well. I threw that book away — jk, jk I gave it to someone who wanted it and I still love her and her philosophy — for me it was too hard. Too confusing. Everything meant something! I needed a professional. Otherwise I was gonna need a professional in a white coat to lock me up pretty soon. • And that’s when I met Jen from @lifeinjeneral. The bun that is @publiclivessecretrecipes introduced us. Jen came over and I could see her brain working some invisible organizational geometry as she looked in my closet, in the garage, at my desk space, and at just about everything else. “Hmm,” she’d utter, over and over again, until eventually she said “We could do some of this better.” She was beyond kind about it. I didn’t feel overwhelmed anymore, I felt excited. And the next day the angel of all human angels Jordan @jordansantoro showed up with five other gifted folks from LIJ, and they walked me through my life. We TORE IT UP and put it back together again! ✨🙋🏻‍♀️📦 [cont’d]

2/2 For five days we went through everything. Extra furniture stacked where my car was meant to go, old birthday cards, photos from high school theatre, clothes that I didn’t need but someone would love, makeup, even towels. We used the garage like a workshop/processing center, and we packed up multiple carloads of donations for the LGBT center here in LA. We got through all of the paperwork and photos and kept only what was meaningful and important. We organized my clothes and shoes and swimsuits and sweaters in a way that was not only beautiful, but that I’ve managed to keep up with. When the team left, and I walked around the house, I realized that I could really breathe. That the space they’d helped me clear was space for my mind to rest, to wander, and to be creative too. I wanted to share all of this with y’all then, to talk about what a gift this was. But then the awful shooting happened in New Zealand and I couldn’t imagine talking about myself. Many terrible things continued happening, over and over again, and so I still didn’t share. I felt silly. But over the last two months I’ve realized that my home feels better than ever to me, and in no small way I owe that to Jordan’s kindness and the team’s hard work. And the fact that my closet still looks as good as when they left!? That drawers and cabinets and my garage actually still make sense!? That’s a clear sign to me that there was a better way to do things. And they showed me. And it stuck. And I’m so excited about it. I even spent the next day organizing the kitchen, wound up building pantry shelves, and got my hundreds of books into a library-level organization zone. I walked almost six miles IN MY OWN HOUSE, working! And it was pure joy! I was so inspired. Now the whole place is tight and awesome. And I guess I wanted to share all of this with you to say that celebrating matters, especially when shit has felt dark out there. And if you’re holding onto things you don’t need, or your life feels cluttered, try to clear some space for yourself. You deserve it. And if you wind up hiring @lifeinjeneral to help you sort it all out, you’re WELCOME. #NotAnAd #ButHonestlyIWouldDoOneForThem #ILoveThemSoMuch

[part one of four] I’ve taken a lot of time away from here. From the platforms and the feeds. The onslaught has felt exhausting. And as I try to cultivate a deeper and more gentle relationship with myself and my health, the onslaught can feel like an attack. Especially when humans are being attacked. Women, and our rights. Citizens in their places of work. Our government, and sacred institutions, by hostile foreign powers. Our environment, as the science clarifying its demise is purposefully hidden by those who wish to bring it to its knees for short-term profit, forgetting the longterm consequence that will affect us all, no matter what gold we’ve hoarded. It feels like a lot. And I feel so incredibly lucky that as this weight felt unbearable, it was time for @mountainfilm. I am so thankful. • The theme of this year’s festival was equity. The stories shared were those that committed to highlight and honor those who are so often othered in the world. To learn at the feet of these characters, these very real people, who leapt off the screen and into my mind and heart — who now own pieces of that innermost real estate forever — was an education and a reckoning. An awakening and a reaffirming. A reminder of how much there is to be done, and of how many good people are out there doing as much as they can, and more, and inviting us along. • @changinggamedoc introduced me to three brave, beautiful, high school athletes. Each of these kids is trans. Each of these kids is made of more courage and heart and determination than I can fathom. I cheered. I wept. I laughed. And I know that everyone who sees this film will do the same, and likewise be ready to fight for these kids. What they face is complex, and differing policies state to state make their experiences no easier. We can do better. @alpha.trans, @sarahrose_trans, & @andrayayearwood thank you for your love and hugs. • @fireonthehill tells the story of the Cowboys of South Central LA. I grew up riding horses, and grew up hearing about the Cowboys in South Central and Compton. I finally got to know them this year. We shared stories and hugs. And I could not be more grateful for the warm welcome I received. [cont’d]
Sophia Bush
[part two of four, @fireonthehill cont’d] These men open up their lives, their culture, and the life-saving magic of horses. Something that has not left me is Calvin saying in the Q&A after the film, “riding saved me… from the gangs and the cops.” Horses gave him a pass. They gave him a life. Their barn, The Hill, tragically burned down and the city of LA hasn’t made replacing it easy for these guys. What Angelenos out there want to raise some good trouble with us — we need to rally behind their charitable initiative @urbansaddles — and make sure The Hill rides again?! All hands on deck! • @hillbillymovie by #AshleyYork is a powerful look at Appalachia, and the stereotypes about the region that have inflicted generational suffering on the people who live there. Stereotypes dehumanize. As as this dehumanization has been applied to many of Appalachia’s residents, this has caused political and economic policy to ravage the land and its people. The harm is heartbreaking, the people profiled are full of complex goodness like most of us are, and the parallels between their community and many other marginalized communities, who suffer so that gargantuan systems may benefit, is undeniable. This film reminded to me listen more closely. To do the work of not assuming. And to lean on what I know to be true. We are more alike than different. And everyone is deserving of support. • I saw some incredible short films too. #GrizzlyCountryFilm by my dearest @ben_moon, which focuses on the work Doug Peacock has been doing (since he returned home from the Vietnam war) to save the Grizzlies and protect our wilderness. #TheLoveBugsFilm by @allisonotto explores the nature of love and love of nature through two entomologists, Charlie and Lois O’Brien. Their love for bugs has given the scientific community, and the world, a priceless gift in their collection. And their love for each other made it all possible. #BareExistence by my friend @max.lowe tells the heartbreaking story of what climate change denial is doing to the polar bears, and the sea ice, in Churchill Canada. The bears are a cautionary tale for us all. [cont’d]
Sophia Bush
[part three of four ] @diangelorobin Robin DiAngelo, the author of ‘White Fragility,’ spoke about white privilege with @favianna1 Favianna Rodriguez, and how allyship must be earned. She unpacked implicit bias, which is sewn into the very fabric of our culture, and how it harms each of us and culture as a whole. I cannot tell you how important it is to listen to her on podcasts, watch her interviews, and read her book. If we want know where to start, what this is all about, what people of color face in America at the hands of whiteness as an ideology, or how to help, we must stop asking those affected to do the emotional labor. This is a good place to start learning, and unlearning too. • I got to sit at the feet of two of my greatest teachers, @oprah and @cherylstrayed, and listen to them converse on life and purpose. Oprah said, “You are damaged in direct proportion to how you were loved or not. You real job is to figure out ‘what is it that I really need?’” It’s an inside job. We have to do the work. We have to own our pain and pursue our joy. We have to lift each other up. She told us, “The most powerful thing you can say to anybody, ‘I see you.’” • The films I didn’t get to see, but are at the top of my list to see next are: - @17blocksfilm. This film is compiled of 20 years of home video taken by the Sanford-Durant family, and is a window into the fight to survive in America. - @gaychorusdeepsouth tells the story of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus touring through the nation’s most conservative states. The music offers a window to unity, and these men are hugged tightly by folks who have previously spoken ill of their existence. one of my best friends said of witnessing the kindness on screen, and not having had it in his own Southern church as a young man, “Something wounded in me behind my consciousness that begged for those hugs.” - @sweetheartdancers2019 is the story of a gay, Indigenous couple who compete as traditional dancers, honoring both their heritage and their individual identity. [cont’d]

[part four] I think that’s why @MountainFilm means so much to me. It is a place to SEE. To look into the very core of people and communities and issues and the planet. To stand before the fire and not look away. • It’s fitting that sweet friend @milckmusic graced the festival with her presence and her beautiful voice, and gave it the anthem: “I can’t keep quiet.” We cannot keep quiet. Here’s to the learning and the rising. Let’s dive in, together. #MountainFilm2019

Today I honor my momma, Maureen. • Today I honor each of you who love your mommas, who are mommas, and each of you who’ve lost your mommas and still miss them so deeply that it aches. I honor those of you who perhaps don’t have a relationship with your mommas, have one that’s complicated or painful, or have had to sever your relationship with your mommas so that you might better nurture yourselves. • I honor each of you who are mommas in your communities. To the children in your lives who might not have been born to you, but to whom you give of yourselves. Each of you who are mommas to your neighbors, and friends, and aging parents. • And today I might, most of all, feel a breathtaking amount of love for all the migrant mommas out there — hundreds of them — who are without their babies today. We will not stop fighting for you. We will take all the love that our mommas gave us and turn it toward you. Today and every day until your babies are back in your arms. That’s where babies are supposed to be. • If you are looking for ways to support these mommas, and to help advocate for them so that their pain and trauma might be reduced, SWIPE to see some of my favorite ladies in the great tees @phenomenal.ly designed to benefit @fams2gether. A purchase of one is an easy way to honor #PhenomenalMother(s) #FamiliesBelongTogether 💖

Our dear @shannonsedg wrote a book so powerful that’ll it’ll pound your heart like a drum. #ToStopAWarlord is about the collective efforts of traditionally separate verticals — advocacy, finance, activism, philanthropy, and the military of more than one country — who at her behest worked cohesively to bring Joseph Kony to justice. And it is also the story of our brother @ocittid, and his unfathomable experiences at the hands of the LRA. His willingness to relive trauma so that we might collectively shed light on mass atrocity, and avoid genocide in the future, must be recognized with gratitude. • With all of the efforts mentioned above “aiming at the same North Star,” as Shannon puts it, the world was changed for the better. The outcome isn’t perfect yet, but advocacy and change are paths that require long term dedication and patience to be paired with unrelenting commitment and effort. This book is a guide. An inspiration. And a wake up call. Humanity can degrade to the worst version of itself more quickly than any of us would like to admit. But if we refuse to forget the North Star of our collective soul, which in David’s words means knowing that “life isn’t life without a life next to me,” we can turn the ship around and pursue restorative justice and community for all. • David and Shannon, being called a sister to you both is one of the great honors of my life. Thank you for letting me sit at your feet and learn from you all these years. Much love to the #BridgewayFoundation, #InvisibleChildren, #PathwaysToPeaceUganda, @larenpoole @adamfinck @jasonradical @danicarussell @bobbybailey @jedidiahjenkins @kennyjamez and the rest of the family who dedicated immense time and resources to telling these stories for the last 15 years. What’s my cheeky sweatshirt about, you wonder? USED CLOTHES, friends! I’m so thrilled to partner with @thredUP X my pal @OliviaWilde — and her company @ConsciousCo — to share their #ChooseUsed Collection. Check it out at thredup.com/chooseused (link in my bio). • thredUP X Olivia Wilde and @ConsciousCo re-designed thousands of pieces of used clothes (like my sweatshirt 💁🏻‍♀️) that are cool, retro and all celebrate fashion reuse. The whole goal is to combat the fashion waste crisis. Did you guys know it’s a crisis!? Fashion is the second most polluting industry after oil!! This is not okay. Keeping clothes in use longer makes a difference. So does buying vintage, having clothing swaps with friends, or borrowing from a pal instead of buying new stuff for special occasions. • However you choose to make an impact in your own life, you can start today, and help combat fashion waste by reposting this (make sure to tag @thredUP and #ChooseUsed)!! @thredup will donate $1 to the Circular Fashion Fund when you do! #ReduceReuseRecycle #ChooseUsed ♻️🌱💚

Merci pour tout @pompiers_paris ♥️💔 Grateful for all of the first responders who risk it all for us, anytime and any place. #NotreDame • Victor Hugo wrote of the significance of Norte Dame, in “The Hunchback.” His musings feel incredibly appropriate now, as we all try to form the words that explain why this destruction cuts us to the core... This Cathedral is a symbol of resilience. History. And humanity. I’ll leave it to him ... • “Great edifices, like great mountains, are the work of centuries. Art often undergoes a transformation while they are pending, pendent opera interrupta; they proceed quietly in accordance with the transformed art. The new art takes the monument where it finds it, incrusts itself there, assimilates it to itself, develops it according to its fancy, and finishes it if it can. The thing is accomplished without trouble, without effort, without reaction,— following a natural and tranquil law. It is a graft which shoots up, a sap which circulates, a vegetation which starts forth anew. Certainly there is matter here for many large volumes, and often the universal history of humanity in the successive engrafting of many arts at many levels, upon the same monument. The man, the artist, the individual, is effaced in these great masses, which lack the name of their author; human intelligence is there summed up and totalized.” • via @voxdotcom #VictorHugo #PompiersDeParis

It’s been a week. Still not quite sure what to say, but I needed a break from the internet. Needed to be quiet and hold my heart in the tender comfort of best friends and community. We lost our sweet Penny girl last Thursday. We knew it was coming, but we didn’t know how quickly the day would be upon us. For the last seven days we’ve cried, laughed, and missed her with an ache that is hard to describe. We’ve traded photos, and been so supported by our loved ones. • I loved Penny from the moment I met her. She was a special, wild, rambunctious little thing. Tiny. Sweet. With giant ears, always at attention. Penny brought me my best friend. @jsmizzie met Penny before she even met me, while I was gone for the weekend and friends in NC were watching my little copper penny puppy, and Patch. The first thing Jenny ever said to me was “I love your dogs!” It’s still an inside joke in our house, to this day. Penny was our mascot. Our welcome wagon. And our guard dog. She helped me, Jenny, @vanessamagos, and Patch survive Griffin’s puppyhood, which was insufferable at times. And even into their adulthood, Penny cleaned his ears every evening around sundown. They were inseparable. Always touching. Always sleeping in a tangled pretzel. Seeing him look for her in the house makes my heart catch in my throat. He misses her too. We all do. Sure, Penny was mine, but she was truly ours. She was family. • Adopt a dog if you’ve ever wanted to. It’ll change your life. It’ll blow your heart open and teach you how big it is. It’ll fill your house with laughter and love. And leave you better than you were before. Sending big love to all the rescuers out there. There’s never enough time, but there’s more than enough love to go around. ♥️ #AdoptDontShop #PennyliciousThePup @pitbullsofinstagram 🐾

The tragic death of @nipseyhussle on Sunday is really weighing heavy on my heart, y’all. What this man meant to LA... We weren’t from the same neighborhood. We never met — though as a fan of his music and his truly entrepreneurial mind I hoped we would one day — but I considered him a role model. A leader. An example. • His savvy began with his music, in limited mixtapes. It spanned to his investment strategy, pouring uncommon dollars into Crenshaw, anchoring his #Marathon clothing store there, opening #Vector90, a coworking space for local entrepreneurs — with a STEM program to create access to tech based jobs and training — and with bold plans to build new residential projects. Rather than take his money outside of his neighborhood, he was keeping it local, and lifting up his community. He was the kind of man who showed up at the local elementary school with new shoes for every kid. He was also passionate about holistic health, and in the midst of making a documentary about Dr. Sebi’s fight against AIDS. He loved his girl, @laurenlondon, and his kids. • In our time building @detroitblows, @nialauryn and I have often referenced Nipsey’s work as inspiration for our own. He reminded us to double down on fighting for Detroit and to encourage investment in other Opportunity Zones that need visionary support. Like I said... we never met, but he was a role model. • My heart hurts for his loved ones and his community. What a loss. Rest In Power, king. All my prayers for Lauren. 🖤

One of the things that’s rarely mentioned in this current world of “internet success,” and “does-everyone-have-it-figured-out-but-me” self-doubt, is the work behind the work. We have some big things happening @detroitblows. This is a year-and-a-half into our doors being open to the public, and at least that long prior to opening in business development and planning, raising funds, and so many spreadsheets my head still spins when I think about them. • But here we are, loving it still. This feels like passion and purpose. This mission of #equitable #access and #representation for all women lives in our bones. Our commitment to reinvesting funds in women in our community and #femaleentrepreneurs, to start pushing for more #equity in #finance and women’s access to it, has not waned. It’s grown. #Detroit, quite literally, grows. • But ... I just want to be #transparent that this has required long nights, tough decisions, and personal sacrifice. That it isn’t glamorous. It’s not a party. But it’s everything to us. • So to anyone out there building their dream, fighting for their community, trying to raise capital, or having doors slammed in your face ... we see you. We believe in you. Don’t give up. It won’t be easy. It hasn’t been for us either. And when you have a day like this one, and you wrap work on a Saturday night at 10:39pm and had to blow off your pal’s dinner and a few other commitments, just know that more cheers-over-dinner are coming. It’s all worth it. Your vision matters. And even though currently women get small percentages of available financing — and #WOC even less — you have some far-off sisters out here fighting alongside you for parity and representation. You are loved. • And if you’re ever in Detroit, you can come into our salon for a blowout and a hug and high five, anytime. We believe in going #BeyondTheBlowout. We believe in you. Salaam Alaikum means “peace be unto you,” and is the standard greeting of the Muslim faith. Salaam means peace. In Islam, Friday is jumu’ah, the day of prayer. And last Friday, a man was greeted at the door of the ChristChurch mosque in New Zealand by Daoud Nabi, who said “come in brother.” That man opened fire on the congregation and killed 50 people. #50Lives. It has taken me a week to crawl out from under the anvil on my chest and write about this. • I have been privileged enough to visit mosques over the years, and pray with some of my closest friends. I am always struck in the deepest part of my heart by the greeting, “welcome, sister,” or “come in, sister.” I have always been made to feel at home. Faith is supposed to do that. To welcome all. To encourage kindness, and empathy, and service, and love. The demonization of our brothers and sisters, the faithful of Islam, is a sin. Period. Islamic extremism is no more “Muslim” than any white nationalist is “a Christian.” EVERY religion teaches compassion. The Koran teaches that anyone who kills one person kills all of humanity. Let that sink in. ALL OF HUMANITY. So let us stop. Stop tolerating whatever the far right is doing. Stop doing “profile pieces” on Nazis and fascists. Stop saying “it’s just a small group of people” (POTUS, I’m looking at you). White nationalism is terrorism. Period. Let us condemn it as such. We should have learned this, as a people, by now. Let us do better. Let us all learn from Jacinda Ardern. She is the leader the world needs and deserves. She is our North Star now. Let us learn from the Maori, and stand in solidarity with our communities, quite literally arm in arm at their doors when they are most vulnerable. • Sufism is called the heart of Islam, and is truly the heart of all faith: peace, compassion, and oneness. The collective heart. Let ours all beat together and drown out any hatred, any disinformation, and anything but love. Insha’Allah 🙏 Image descriptions: 1. Maori men offer their traditional nose kiss, the Hongi, to the Muslim community, standing in solidarity as one New Zealand. [continued in part 2]

[part 2] 1. Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand, comforting grieving members of the ChristChurch Muslim community. She wore a hijab as a sign of respect, and both deemed the tragedy an act of terrorism and told mourners that New Zealanders were all “united in grief.” This is a leader. 2. Ardern telling ChristChurch mourners “New Zealand mourns with you” and introduces two minutes of silence in New Zealand during which the Call to Prayer was observed. 3. A tribute to the #50Lives lost by @alhassan.elmasri. 4. Jacinda Ardern announcing NZ banning all military style rifles. 5. A 3 year old boy, the same age as the youngest ChristChurch mosque victim Mucaad Ibrahim, mourns with his family. 6. Prayer carpets laid out to honor the #50Lives lost at ditib-Central Mosque in Cologne, Germany. 7. The Mongrel Mob biker gang shows up to guard their local mosque and honor the fallen with the haka. Let the world unite against hate. Insha’Allah. 🙏

[cont’d]

[cont’d]
  • Sophia Bush

We are #DetroitBlows. • @nialauryn">@nialauryn">#DetroitBlows. • @nialauryn @katycockrel @detroitblows 🖤💇‍♀️🌱 #sisterhood

Once you start training at @gstbody, you realize the world is your oyster. Or rather, your jungle gym. And every bike rack/countertop/airport chair/lamppost becomes something you can use to do the #GSTpulloff. And suddenly being in your body is fun, your tissues are animating, and movement — that creates fitness & wellness — becomes a joy and a not a chore. Thank you @annaraheofgst for giving me the keys to my own lock. And for hanging off of bike racks on Sunset Boulevard with me and @kendrabrackenferguson. That’s #sisterhood 🤣💃🏻😘

Sunday, 7:36pm 🖤 Home. • UPDATE: Guys. Not sure how this precious photo has somehow signified a tragedy to everyone, but Griffin is fine! I picked this emoji because it looks just like his sweet little nose. That’s literally all. He’s just so cute. So calm down, y’all. That is all! 🤣
