[part 1] On Saturday I had the honor of speaking at @everytown @momsdemand @studentsdemand #GunSenseForum in Des Moines, #Iowa. I spoke as a concerned citizen, a gun owner, a hobbyist, and a woman whose family has been affected by a mass shooting. Make no mistake, I understand the issue from all sides. And the issue? This is a public health crisis. People are dying in the streets because our leaders are too cowardly to act. America has 122 guns for every 100 people. No other nation on Earth comes close. Next in line, at 40?? Yemen. A war zone. The issue is not mental health. The issue is easy access to guns. Period. All of the data proves this, and we’d have even more if our government wasn’t REFUSING to allow the CDC to study gun violence. That should be a clue. They want to deny us overwhelming information because it’s a bad truth for them the lobbyists who control them. Foreign countries are issuing warnings, urging their citizens not to travel here because it’s become too dangerous. Walmart is taking imagery of guns off the shelves, and video games that are played by the rest of the world to no increase in shootings anywhere else, but they won’t stop selling guns. They had the nerve to place a sign over a glass case filled with rifles that reads “OWN THE SCHOOL YEAR LIKE A HERO.” What the fuck does that even mean? It would be laughable if it weren’t so damn sad. A Fox News poll released today shows: - 90% of Americans support requiring criminal background checks on ALL gun buyers - 81% support passing "red flag" laws that allow police to take guns from people shown to be a danger to themselves or others - 67% banning assault rifles and semi-automatic weapons Imagine how high the numbers go among a bi-partisan audience! A measure that would handle these issues has already passed the house, and is stalled because of #MoscowMitch McConnell. We all need to pressure him and other Senators to reconvene the Senate immediately and vote on these gun-control measures. Have the vote! Do what your constituents want! (Continued...)

[part 2] I also had the honor of listening to — and spending one on one time with — virtually all of the Democratic candidates at the #GunSenseForum. They all made brilliant points. From @kamalaharris pointing out that Trump — who has been cited as a motivation for violent crime BY violent criminals 36 times in 2.5 years (for the record, both Bush and Obama were cited ZERO times in domestic terrorism attacks) and has been cited more times in attacks on our homeland in the last three years than any other person or organization on earth — may not have pulled the trigger but “he’s certainly been tweeting out the ammunition” to these domestic terrorists. To @pete.buttigieg rightly pointing out that we have already drawn a line when it comes to the right to bear arms. “Somewhere between a water balloon and a predator drone, we drew a line. The line needs to move.” He agrees, as most folks with his type of military background do, that weapons of war have no place on our streets. @kirstengillibrand, @elizabethwarren, @juliancastrotx, all made BRILLIANT points about the realities facing our communities across the country. As did @corybooker And @betoorourke, who couldn’t be there but still took the time to send in videos in support. Not one person from the GOP attended, or weighed in. Perhaps because they’ve been bought and paid for to the tune of $36.6 million (contributed to Trump alone) by the NRA. They may control the senate now, but WE HAVE THE POWER to VOTE THEM OUT and at least TRY harder for our kids and our communities. And try we must. We do not have to live like this. We do not have to die like this. Let’s clean it up already. Thank you to the candidates for showing up and speaking truth to power. The Moms and Dads and survivors for showing up for those who can’t. In particular, the disconnect that can exist between expectations and dreams. And through the experience, we get to ask what kind of understanding we might be led to, seeing the vastness of the disconnect between them? How do we navigate the expectations of those who love us? Of our own? How do we move — in this ever evolving world — between the desires and pressures around degrees, careers, family, marriage, sexuality, and our futures? Having watched the episodes, I find myself marinating on big ideas. What does freedom mean to us? To the generation before us? To those coming after? What does writing our own rules look like? How do we take control of our own timelines? I cannot wait for you all to see this, head on to @skii to see more. It’s been a really great week, y’all. Monday was my birthday, and honestly the start of this year feels like a gift I’m slowly opening. Like a reveal. It’s tender. Beautiful. And it feels bigger and more delicious and gooey good than anything ever has before. I find that I’m smiling a lot. Like, beaming. Everywhere I look I see beauty. In humans. The world. On the street. Despite the tragedy we know is there, I see a rising tide of sacred hearts supporting one another. I don’t know how to explain it. But it’s truly shown me that I wouldn’t change one single day — not even the worst ones — if it could risk that I didn’t wind up right here, right now. This goodness is the sum total of every single experience so far, and I’m so excited about all of it. Not to mention what’s to come! • Thanks for coming along for the ride. The ones I know, and the ones I don’t. If you’re putting your heart out there, and in here, I’m grateful for you. Cancer season, I’m so happy to have been born under your moon. • Image description: on my birthday I wound up stopping for coffee at a corner shop that, unbeknownst to my sweet pal driving, was my papa’s first studio in LA. He rented this corner unit space in the early 70’s and began his career there. He stenciled the street address on the building in green paint in 1973. It’s still there. He and my Mom installed these terracotta tiles I’m standing on later. And in 1982, while they were working to ready the first little house we’d live in as a family, I was born, and we lived in the loft at the back of this studio space for a few months. I stood there on my birthday soaking up the roads I’ve traveled since I was a baby being carried home from the hospital across this threshold. A few nights later I took my parents to a restaurant on the same block so they could look at it with me. My Dad can’t believe his stencil is still up. Wild, right? Kismet, one could say. My, my, my I’m such a fan of this universe and the magic it so clearly bestows sometimes. Thank you thank you thank you. I’m picking up what you’re putting down. LFG ✨

1/2 • Eighteen months ago I started reading pilot scripts for the 2018 season. I was rejoining the television landscape after a nonnegotiable six month hiatus from sets (thank you to my amazing team at #CAA + #Untitled for respecting that choice & sticking to it with me) and curious about what story I wanted to tell next. • I read a pilot about a 50+ year old woman working in government service, as a writing sample for this guy David C. White. Would we want to develop something, perhaps? Seemed like a yes. And then I read what felt 100’s of other shows. But I kept thinking about THAT one. I didn’t like any of the pilots for women in my demo as much as THAT show. That show called #Surveillance. I called him up and said, “who is that woman before she’s made it to the top? When she’s on her way up, only has one kid, is often the lone skirt in a man’s world, has proven herself countless times but is constantly asked to again and again? Who is SHE, do you think?” And immediately we were collaborators. It only took about a day and half to also become best friends! • We set to redeveloping. We found our North Star in our fearless and incredibly brilliant, almost omniscient director/EP @patriciariggen. We pitched. We sold. We did more drafts. We cast. I spent months — as both a producer & an actor on this job — testing all of the actors who came in. I know from experience how shit those audition rooms can be, so I wanted mine to feel different. Personal. For days & weeks I acted across wonderful talents. We cried. Laughed. Screamed. Debated. We brought the heat. We landed with — and the list is so good it still has me SHOOKETH — @catalinasandino, @therealleech, @matthewmodine, @dennishaysbert, and #RaphaelAcloque. We prepped for months. Shot through November and December, edited January through March. We delivered the highest testing pilot at the network in nearly 10 years — SO PROUD OF US!! — but ultimately, though it’s magic, in the greater landscape of their slate and given the budget of making a big, bold, beautiful show that takes moon shots or nothing, it’s just not going to work. • I share all of this, the good and the sad, for the other artists out there [cont’d]

2/2 • Never give up on what you know to be art. There’s a business here too & sometimes story + financial computations don’t match up. Be an artist anyway. Have as much fun as we did. And if it’s doesn’t work, don’t take it personally. It’s not about you or your project. If I’ve learned anything from my incredible team @cbstv, who have been great leaders, collaborators, & friends on this? The way you work & your level of commitment will leave a mark no matter the outcome. Their calls to discuss what a special thing this is, and to collectively lament that we just simply can’t manage to make it all work on paper, are a testament to that. I’m grateful, as an actor + producer, that the work has made a mark & led to friendships that’ll last a lifetime. And that my bosses are already looking for the next thing we can do together. • I’m beyond excited to carry this experience onto the next one. Of course I’m sad too. That you all won’t get to see Maddy, in all of her capability & fallibility. The woman I was able to create with Dave and Patricia is someone I’d love for you to meet. I’m crushed that the best TV husband there has ever been, @therealleech, is a man you won’t get to know as Mike. Thank GOD Allen & his IRL wife live 8 minutes away & I see them constantly. And Cata. My sister. My teacher. My partner in crime. These folks? I spent my last Christmas with them! We’re family. And to big fam? Matthew & Dennis? Nick. Brian. Catherine. Judith. Rukiya. Lovell. Tina. What a TEAM! I love you all, til the end of time. Thank you for showing up and showing OFF with all that talent. You all, collectively, taught me a whole new level of collaboration & joy. • As for the amazing fans who’ve been so excited about this project and what’s coming next, thank you for the love! What this means, in technical terms, is that I’m no longer being held from doing other jobs! (*And thank you to @20thcenturyfox for giving me a pass on that contract clause to work on things I love, like #EASY @netflix, even though you could’ve said no!) Now I’ve got MANY scripts in my inbox, and I’ll be sure to put a little (or a lot) of Maddy’s badassery into the next one. Love!
