I recently “skate-painted” this giant canvas for a @dumanphotography skate-art project. It has since been cut into 12 x 12-inch pieces (signed by me) that we are selling, all proceeds benefit @tonyhawkfoundation’s mission to empower youth through the creation of public skateparks. This is the closest I’ll ever become to being a painter btw.

Happy Birthday to this kind, inspiring young man with boundless talent. I was relatively young myself when Riley was born - while still trying to figure out my own challenges and responsibilities - so I am thankful he made good choices throughout his formative years to become the gentleman you see here. 🛹🎂

It’s heartbreaking to learn of the passing of Jon Comer. He was an extremely talented skater regardless of physical challenges. I have fond memories of skating and snowboarding with Jon; he was always in good spirits and had a great sense of humor (he covered his prosthetic with stickers and claimed they were his “tattoos”). My condolences to his friends and family. He was a true inspiration (swipe for examples)

1988 commercial for Matchbox RC Radskate. Fun facts: DMSR closed in 1987 but we were given permission to shoot this (and Thrashin’) there because the Hollywood production companies carried their own insurance. I dropped in switch at the start because they wanted me facing the camera going down the wall and refused to change angles. I did the “wiggly” invert as a joke on the last take and of course that’s the one they chose for the edit. Kid at the end saying “it’s so cool!” Is @dannyway This was the original voiceover and now it sounds just like a @southpark commercial parody Thanks @skatewatchers for finding this gem

1980 footage from Oasis Skatepark shortly after I was sorta invited to @dogtownskates team (this board is a hand-me-down from @mikesmithliberty; Triplane with @Independenttrucks and Blood Wheels). Of note: stalled layback rollout, early backside ollie and backside varial (first trick I “invented,” last trick shown) I chose 999 because it was one of my first memories of hearing music beyond the pale of top 40 radio. As this song blasted out of the intercom system of the skatepark on one of my first visits, I was transformed

We were the weird kids in school. We dressed funny, we listened to [and sometimes created] unpopular music, we were called “skater fags” in the halls... but we persevered with a small community of diehards. There were no guarantees of success or any hint of understanding from outsiders as to why we chose this path. Tonight these weird kids had a section of a massive festival devoted to our interests; mainly skateboarding and punk music. Thanks to @wonderfrontfest for the opportunity to highlight our misfit scene that has stood the test of time. Do what you love, embrace the things that make you different and believe in yourself above all else. We were wildly uncool growing up and I have never been more thankful.

Last night was wild. I took a helicopter to downtown L.A. to shoot something with @nyjah. We skated through 2nd street tunnel a few times while police held traffic on both sides, then 20+ other skaters joined us for the last shot. Got back in the helicopter and headed home. If these are the twilight years of my skate career, I’ll be riding them until the wheels fall off.

It was great chatting with @AmericanExpressBusiness, @Dell and @laurengores earlier this week at #DF19 ☁️ – our brands are very different (Lauren is the CEO and founder of @summerfridays), but we hold the same importance of listening to our consumers in order to run a business and stay true to the brands we've built. #AmexBusiness #DellSmallBiz

1992: Birdhouse Skateboards was formed, along with Blitz Distribution. Andrew Reynolds is on the original Birdhouse team roster as an amateur. Riley Hawk is born later that year 1995: Andrew Reynolds turns pro for Birdhouse 1999: Andrew forms Baker Skateboards with help and funding from Blitz Distribution 2006: Riley becomes an “official” amateur for Birdhouse, along with some of his peers known as Shep Dawgs 2007: Andrew forms Bakerboys distribution, which sells Baker and other brands 2012: Riley joins Baker Skateboards 2013: Riley turns pro for Baker 2017: Bakerboys becomes Birdhouse’s US distributor 2019: Baker 4 premiers. Andrew and Riley both have stellar skating parts in this landmark video. I watch as a fan and proud father, while still actively skating and maintaining the Birdhouse brand 27 years later. Lost and found VHS footage from a random night at Del Mar Skate Ranch circa 1985. I don’t remember ever doing one-footed eggplants, so this might have been the only one. Of note: @carlsbad_pipelines & @theadictsofficial stickers on my helmet. Dunno what’s up with the gas face or no sound... this was all that was recovered from the tape. We were probably re-recording over bails because... videotapes were expensive?

This broken vert crew (eyebrow, wrist, ankle) just saw #KnivesOut and it was the perfect reprieve from focusing on our injuries. We were fixated instead on “who done it” with a stellar cast and enjoyed every twist. @knivesout opens on Nov 27nd... hopefully we’ll all be skating again by then.

My dad joined the Navy when he was young because his childhood was challenging and his career options were scarce. Before long, he was flying fighter planes from aircraft carriers in WWII and moving constantly. He eventually got stationed in San Diego and was honorably discharged due to health concerns. He hustled to find work, once running a hot dog stand in Ocean Beach before starting a small musical instrument distribution company (based on my sister’s desire to be in a band, which she did with great success). He raised four overachieving kids and eventually formed the National Skateboard Association (based on my desire to skate 24/7). He was supportive beyond compare, and never made us feel guilty about his own struggles. I was lucky to have his parenting template once I became a father myself. Unfortunately, he only met one of my kids before passing away from lung cancer in 1995. This is the only picture I have of him with Riley and I cherish it. Thanks to all the veterans that sacrifice everything for their country and family; we wouldn’t be here without you.

I have been thinking about this flip-board-transfer thing for a couple years and finally tried to make it a reality last week, going so far as to create a comically shaped landing board. The hardest part was aiming for the landing zone, and then leaning forward once I actually got on it. This edit represents about half of the attempts that day. Thanks also to @dupedupe & @grampagram for being my support team on this strange endeavor. It was a brutal battle but I’ve already recovered thanks to @cannahempx

Last night I saw @mike_doughty_ perform Soul Coughing’s “Ruby Vroom” in its entirety and it was great. The album is 25 years old and it holds up as a force of creativity and a truly unique, eclectic sound, and Mike is still prolific with his own music (check his @patreon). I highly recommend seeing the tour if you get a chance... “and the radio man says rock and roll lives”
